Okay, now where would I find this shelving?

Somewhere there exists or used to exist a type of shelving where you'd attach the support directly to the wall, then just slip your shelves into the holes on the support / rack thingie and that way you could attach shelves to the wall mid-way up the wall and not have to worry about floor space. In this room, I have 2 areas that I want to add shelving but keep the stuff that's up against the wall at the floor (ie: tables and stuff). For the life of me, I can't find this type of shelving on the Home Depot site, and if it's as expensive as I've found at the Container Store, *something* is totally messed up because I could buy *full* shelves for less than that.

Any ideas? Any ideas even what that type of shelving is *called* so I know what to ask about when/if I go to the store?

Do you mean the type of shelves where you put a channel type bar on the wall, and then the brackets slip into the holes (channels) and the shelves rest on the brackets? If that is the type, I know they sell them at Home Depot because both of my DDs have them over their desks. They were very inexpensive.

Yes, exactly like that. I *thought* they sold them at HD, but I can't find them on the HD site. (Of course that's not saying much. Home Depot's site isn't exactly the best organized site  )

Thanks Allie -- were they easy to install?

We just installed shelving like that in our play room. We bought the uprights and brackets and then made the shelves out of MDF. It ended up costing us about $100 total for everything, which wasn't bad. Our shelves were all 16'' wide and we had 4 8' shelves and 4 6' shelves. We got everything at Home Depot.

Not bad at all, considering the price of a single shelf. More functional in the room I'm wanting to use it in, I'm assuming you could paint the bar thingie to accent the wall/trim color, and cheaper than buying more shelves.

Thanks!! :)

This is the best photo I could come up with online. I think it is called a shelf track system. Whatever!

My husband is no Bob Vila and he had no problem putting them up so I'd say that the answer to your question is: Yes, they were easy to install! I think the biggest issue was just to be absolutely sure that the tracks are level. We bought the white channels, white brackets, and white laminate shelves. They look decent and it really is a great place for the kids' trophies and trinkets.

Okay, stupid question -- what's MDF? LOL!

MDF is Medium Density Fiber board. To me basically plywood only not so splintery. They use it on trading spaces amy hates the stuff. Hope this helps. I'm in the misdt of creating a playroom and I stink at sheetrock.

MDF is essentially sawdust and glue. Very stable. Doesn't warp or expand and contract as much as "real" wood. But it's not very pretty to look at. And it doesn't hold stain very well. :)

Of course, I shouldn't be throwing stones at manufactured lumber. My house is sheathed in Celotex. I guess you could call that stuff NDF (No density fiberboard). I think that cardboard would be stronger.

Note to self. Next home will be built of either bricks or concrete block.

Sorry, I guess I should have explained MDF so I'm glad someone else did. They are right, it isn't pretty, but we painted ours to match the color scheme in that room. It was really simple. We worked on it one Saturday and were able to get then cut, painted, installed, and everything on them within that one day.
