If you have had a cat before and got another one - did you go from male to female or female to male and why???? And which is your preference??? We will be getting a new cat but I would like a female and dd said she would like another male. Male cats and I just don't mess together and I find female cats to be more affectionate.

Hmmm..I've found the male cats we've had to be more affectionate. Especially after they're fixed.

We've had some very wacky female cats. I think I'd always pick a male.

In my house, the males are just slightly more affectionate than the female, but just slightly. The female is more demanding of attention, though -- just wants to play instead of affection. :)

I'd go for either. :) Whatever gender you end up bonding with when you meet the kitty.

Dogs, though, I strictly prefer female.

we have four cats, all of whom are loving and affectionate. the most cuddly one happens to be male, the most standoffish female.

male cats, even neutered males, sometimes mark their territory. one of our male cats never did this when he was an "only" cat, but when he found himself lving with 2-3 other felines, he became very territorial. consequently he spends a good deal of time in the back yard, and we keep him separated from the other cats when he's in the house. females are generally less territorial.

I think in general I have found female cats to be cleaner and easier to care for than male cats (in that respect). We've had several male cats even after being fixed, who would "mark their territory" on our nice flooring. Currently I have two females and I think I would keep getting females due to their cleanly nature. As for affection, I have found that with cats as long as we get them at a younger age and can "raise" them ourselves both can be the same with how loving they are. Both girls we have are very affectionate kitties (in very different ways).

The two most affectionate cats I've ever had were two neutered males. Cuddled and nuzzled with me all the time. The one would even fall asleep in my arms if I held him like a baby and stroked him under his chin.:D  Just my experience, tho'--I bet there are lots of snuggly females, too. But I agree with the other posters. Our one male, even tho' neutered, would sometimes mark his territory, getting it on the walls and carpet. It was frustrating to have to clean it up, but we loved him anyway.

I always thought that my roommate's cat Andy (boy) was affectionate, until I adopted Fergie (girl). She loves me so much it's embarassing. Diana is very affectionate too.

I think it depends on the cat.

Thanks...this helps alot. Well dd's reason she wants a male is because she's so use to saying "him" and "his" and "where is he"!!! I had to laugh.

I had one female cat that was the most loving and caring person - she was a beautiful calico. She wandered off to, what I found out later, have her babies and never returned. She was outside mostly because I wasn't suppose to have cats at my apartment (I snuck her in at night!!!). The other cat I've had was a very gripy, *****y all black cat - even up to the day we had to have her put to sleep after my mom died - she was *****y!!!! I will NEVER get an all black cat again!!!! I don't know what it was about Butter...he and I never meshed and he wasn't totally affectionate. Now that might be because we got him when he was a little over 6 months. Fortunately we never had a problem with him spraying and he was fixed. All the other cats that seemed attracted to him sprayed but he never did....

I've usually taken in adult strays over the years and have had both males and females become very affectionate. You don't have to raise them from kittens to get an affectionate cat!

I have a preference for female cats because of the risk of male's spraying, as stated in earlier posts.

I have a male cat and if I were ever to get another one it would be male also. My SIL and aunt both have females and they are mean, I like my sweet, loving, affectionate male. My cat sprayed once when he was about six months old, we had him fixed and never had another problem with him spraying, we've had him over 16 years.

affectionate then the ladies.....but the male cats also tend to have a urinary problem......we lost our himalayin to this problem....he had a severe case......

I loved my male cat more than anything else in the world. He was a Persian/barn cat mix and was my "baby." He was very affectionate and was in my lap all of the time.

That said, when he had to be put to sleep due to a stroke, I promised myself that I would NEVER have another male cat. Although he had been fixed, he would still occassionally "spray" or "miss" the litterbox. His favorite territory to mark was the kitchen cabinets (YUCK)! While he did have a couple of URI problems, that was probably *not* the reason he did these things. He was just "being a boy."

I now have a female Maine Coon. Although the breeder warned me that she would "not be as affectionate" as my previous cat (due to the breed I guess), she is actually every bit as loving. I think it depends upon the cat and how much you bond with them with they are itty bitty kitties. She is a fastidious girl who has *never* sought out places other than the litterbox to do her business.

The only male cat that I've had is a Himalayan and he is not affectionate at all. I don't understand why because we have raised him from a baby. My other 4 are girls and they are very very affectionate. I have heard that different breeds have different personalities.

I am considering getting a male Maine Coon because my female Coon is so so loving, and the male Coons are so big and beautiful. If I get this one it will be when he is a kitten so hopefully he will be raised with my others and not feel territorail....I hope...lol.

Are you planning to get a shelter cat or a breed?? My shelter cat is actually the most loving of all of mine and I have a Ocicat, Persian, Himalayan and Maine Coon and the shelter baby is sweeter than all of them. Good luck on whatever you decide.

The nature of the female cat is to mouse, nurture and work... sort of like the nature of the female human! :p

I've had both, I had a male and a female in the same household for 15 years, the female, Raven, was all about work and mousing, tough as nails but responsible. My male, Rambo, was a useless, loveable lump! Affectionate, kind, adorable... I just loved that about him but I also loved Raven's ways.

Now I have two boys and two girls. Zena is all about work and responsibility, Aaliyah is my little baby girl who is just a lump of love, Max, my big boy, is such a GUY, he also is very subserving to the "ladies" and minds his manners, and Meeko is my little boy, just a mischievous mess! ALL are very loveable and cuddly, the boys more than the girls, but the girls, when they want, will demand it. The boys are less pushy.

I love them all. God gave them purposes in life as he gave all of the different sexes and it depends on what you like that will be the fit for you.

I am so glad you guys are going to get another one. I've found that to help the healing process immensely. Of course, no one will replace Butter (which is my nickname, BTW :p ) so keep that little love close to your heart...

God bless...

The female cat I grew up with would sleep in my lap & nuzzle the inside of my arm. We called her a house ornament because she wasn't a very athletic cat. She was very cuddly, but she also wouldn't use the litterbox regularly.

I moved in with my BF about a year & a half after he got our cat (a male) so I wasn't involved in the selection process. My BF picked him out because all the other cats were asleep, but he was awake & looking for some action. I think our cat sees my BF as a living scratching post because he has always rough-housed with him. I've always petted & cuddled him. He comes to me every night for his daily dose of attention, but he doesn't sleep with us. When he's had enough, he's outta there.

We haven't had any problems with spraying. As for missing the litterbox, we have one of those litterboxes with the top on it so that takes care of any bad aim issues.

My baby boy Simba is my first cat ever, and he is a sweetie. I just love him so much, but you know that.:D

Years ago, I had female cats and they were both kind of standoffish. They hid when strangers came and ran if you got too close to them. Now I have a neutered male who is an absolute lover bubble! He follows us all over the house and plops right in your lap or sleeps on top of you when you're laying down. He loves to play or just cuddle up. He comes when you call him (just like his "mama", a golden retriever) and he's just plain wonderful. When he dies, I'll probably die a little too. We adopted him from a shelter when he was a kitten and has never sprayed or acted territorial. He's just the sweetest kitty in the world. (He's also a polydactyl cat, he has extra toes on his front paws).

I've had too many cats of both sexes to count. I prefer males. I've had brother and sister cats, from the same litter. The male was much more affectionate. I have two males now. My dd has a brother, sister and mother of one of my males. The males are both friendlier. I've never had a problem with spraying, but I tend to neuter at a very early age. I say go with a male. Mine are so bad they won't leave me alone!!!

The most affectionate cat that I ever owned was a male. He always wanted to be held and petted. Even my friends who didn't like cats often commented on how friendly Logan was.

At the same time, I had a couple of female cats. One came from an abusive environment and always hid behind furniture and was always very skittish. The other female seemed to "tolerate" me. She was very aloof most of the time. She would stand at the door and howl to be let out. Then howl to be let back in. The only time that she wanted to have anything to do with me was when she was hungry. She was the most beautiful cat that I've ever owned. I've never owned a pure-bred cat, but this particular female looked to be nearly a pure Russian Blue. But as pretty as she was, Logan (the male) was my buddy and my favorite of my three cats.
