OK to let 12yr old return alone

On the cruise when DS was 11 he was able to sign himself in and out the the Lab as he wanted. He had specific places he could go. We also had a tablet and pencil in the room where he could write us notes of where he was (and we could do the same).

What he did most with his "freedom" was to leave dinner early (he lives in shorts, hated the pants and really didn't like the dress shirt and tie on formal/semi-formal nights). He would finish his dinner/dessert and rush back to the room to change, but more importantly to see what "animal" had come to visit us (we had late seating). Then he would either come back to the restaurant (once) or usually to the lab. We felt pretty safe letting him move around the ship like this on his own.
