probably could find this myself but anyone know the limits to #gb on memory cards for a rebel xt ? bought a point and shoot for granddaughter and it said it took " up to 2gb" cards. i was planning on getting some 4 or more gb cards for my xt but wondered if anyone ever heard of cards being to big for it

Not sure what the largest size it will hold is, but from a brief Google search it looks like 4gb cards will be fine!

Janet I hadn't even thought of this. Didn't realize there was a limit. That is kinda interesting especially with faster and larger cards coming out all the time. I just bought 2 8 gig cards for my new camera body. I thought about getting 16 gig but then thought - if one of them fails that is a lot of photos lost, so I stuck to the 8 gigs.

SD cards are limited in size to 2GB... anything larger than that is an SDHC card. Your camera should be fine with the larger cards, since it supports SDHC cards, but the camera you bought your granddaughter probably only supports SD cards.

FWIW, I use a 16gb SHDC card in my XSi, and haven't had any problems yet.

that is a popular train of thought, on the other hand I've heard that swapping cards frequently is a good way to end up with a corrupt card,

I've been shooting with 16 gig cards since MAy, I've been fine with one exception, I put one in my camera, before a shoot and the camera wouldn't read it.., last time I buy that brand

The size limit is due to the file system structures used to organize data on the card. FAT16 file system is limited to 2Gb while FAT32 file system holds up to 2TB (2000Gb).

dSLR cameras with CF cards were the first to bump up against the 2Gb limit. Support for FAT32 was added quite some time ago to most dSLR cameras. Even the old XT can support FAT32 and cards greater than 2Gb.

However, P/S camera with SD cards only recently made the transition to FAT32 file system. To emphasize the requirement, all SD cards greater than 2Gb are marked as SD HC (high capacity) to denote requirement for FAT32. Only cameras that support SD HC cards with FAT32 can use cards greater then 2Gb. Check you camera manual. If your camera supports SD HC, then you can use cards greater then 2Gb.

Microsoft was granted several patents on FAT32 file system. At one time, they requested royalties or threatened lawsuits against any manufacturer of a device that supports a flash card greater then 2Gb. However, some of the patent were re-examined and rejected. I think the Microsoft lawyers eventually gave up on the dream of making "easy money" on FAT32 patents.

I bought an 8 gb card for my rebel XS and the card reader on my laptop would not recognize it. I had to get a usb reader for SDHC cards. $3 shipped on Ebay.

thanks all, camera i bought gdaughter supports sdhc but didn't know what that was since mine are cf cards so i guess hers is only up to 2gb on the sds. i saw some 4gb cfs for pretty cheap a while ago and was going to replace some of my older cards( one seems to freak out occasionally when i try to get the photos off it and figure it must be getting senile like it's owner) and hadn't thought about it till now so now i'll feel confident buying some big one

which brand? did you think it was just the particular card or really the brand

Make sure you update your drivers on the computer as well. When I got my 8gb my card reader wouldn't read it. (it does now after hunting down the driver)

Mickey88-My 8gb set to RAW only shows 212 available pics. So in the last week or so with the holidays I've been uploading my pics after going over 100 and reformatting the card. Would that be considered switching out cards frequently? I just did not want to get caught in the middle of present opening and the like and running out of space which I heard is bad too. I'm thinking I'm going to invest in a couple of 16gb cards.

Actually, there are 4gb SD (not SDHC) cards floating around out there. But those are fairly unusual and I suspect none of them are currently available any more.

If your camera only supports SD but not SDHC cards, you may want to check for a firmware update. My original now-quite-old DSLR had a firmware update to do this, and I recently updated our Fuji F40 point-n-shoot to improve SDHC compatability (it only worked with one or two of our 4gb cards and none of our 8gbs before, now it works with all of them.)
