I think I need to make a new thread out there, because there are still kids who play VMK who just don't "get it". We all see it. "I've been hacked!" or "I've been scammed!" What they aren't telling you is the full story.

Tonight, I went into the DIS chat room. I received a private message in chat asking if I played VMK. When I said yes, the girl asked me if I played the space quest yet. And when I said, "Yes, a while ago." She did something that made me want to yell into the computer, "WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS AND WHY AREN'T THEY WATCHING YOUR ONLINE ACTIVITIES???

She asked me to log on as her character to do the space quest for her. How many of you know that this is the worst possible thing you can do in VMK? I immediately told her never ask people to log on her account, and to never share her log in info.

So...what happened next? She posted to the chat room that her account was hacked, and she lost Stitch and something else. Well, I couldn't let the sympathy roll in for her. I posted to the room that she asked me, a total stranger, to log in as her character...and you know the rest.

So yes, I'm "harsh". I'm "mean". But I'm fed up with players complaining that they were hacked when it was their own fault. So if any new players (especially the younger ones) read this post, and understand how serious this is....I'd feel I was accomplishing something.

Now...I'll get off my soapbox. Maybe soon we can deal with the kids who insist on sharing their locations and level in school they are in.

Yes yes and yes, I totally agree with you. NEVER give out you log in information and also NEVER EVER EVER EVER ask someone to get on for you. It's asking for trouble. And you aren't being harsh you are being a responsible adult. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 2 thumbs up.

I agree totally but would like to add.... NEVER GO INTO DIS CHAT! :lmao:

But they are so friendly in DIS chat! I've been a bit harsh to the girl, though.
She did message me saying I hurt her feelings. But I was so annoyed that she didn't protect her online identity enough and THEN complained that she got "hacked".

Astro, I saw you pop in. She wasn't asking us to give our info. She was volunteering giving us HER info.

oh.. bc she said she got hacked and she said.. " anyone have a free account for me?"

sorry for the confusion:)

"Hello there total stranger! Would you go back to my house and put up my ceiling fan for me? I wont be home, just call me when you are done, here is the key. Be back later!"

"oh my goodness, someone broke into my house and stole my Plasma TV!"

This bothers me in more than one way:

First, NEVER EVER EVER give ANYONE your log in information!! NEVER!! Not only could you get hacked, but the person could change your account information and you might lose your character forever.

Second, please don't ever agree to log into another player's account. What if they then claim something valuable is missing? No one should take the chance of being falsely accused of scamming!!

Free account? All accounts are free! I guess she was looking for a "fully loaded" account, not a "free" one. :sad2:

Please play it safe out there!

This is exactly why I felt the need to post about it, here. However, the
other interesting thing happened when a girl I knew to cause trouble on the
DIS and VMK came into chat and made a point to apologize to me for her previous bad behavior and mention that she was banned. I tend to think that the player causing the drama could be HER under another account.

Still, I feel the scenario CAN be plausible enough to merit a warning here.

For what it is worth, I don't think you were harsh and I think you reacted correctly...like a concerned adult. Sadly, there are child predators EVERYWHERE and you never know when one is on VMK.

Right on! i agree whole-heartedly! my mom almost made me get off because i was talking to other vmkers. But once i told her how restricted the talking was, she softed up a bit. but yes, control CONTROL CONTROL!!!! you can't stress that enough!

I guess my concern goes way past just VMK. At least with VMK the most they can lose is a virtual item. HOWEVER, if they are so willingly giving away account information for VMK, then how easy will it be for someone to get other account information from them...i.e. an email account where there might be identification sensitive information in there? One small step just leads to bigger and bigger steps. Being harsh about a child's innocence is one thing and usually I'm not to happy about people who do things like this. But in this sense, Lori, I'm right with you on this because this has the potential to lead down a dangerous path. And through her hurt feelings, I do hope she realizes the importance of this.

the chat keeps saying error messages so I cant go in:surfweb:
great thread btw

Oh gosh that's what that girl was asking me in DIS chat yesterday... I couldn't figure it out. She said "do space quest plz I'll give u info"

I was really busy so I ignored her. :confused3

Exactly!! I think there are alot of smart kids that know not to give the info out of any kind but then you have the ones like this and you don't know what they will just give up for info. Its sad and scary. They have no idea who they are really talking to. If feelings are hurt oh well. It happens in life no matter what. This is to try to help protect someone. You did the right thing with how you handled it all. WTG!! We all know not everyone would and that is the scary part.
And seeing that she asked for a free acct to be given to her. You have to wonder if she just wanted from the get go an acct with everything on it or someone to feel sorry for her and give her things she didn't have and wanted..such as the Stitch hat.
