There are lots of comments on it being too large. How does it compare to POR or CSR? We've stayed in some of the furthest rooms from the food court area of POR and really didn't have a problem....I'm assuming SSR is larger or is it spread out in comparison to other DVC resorts? TIA

Prior to buying at SSR we always stayed at POR and loved it. We never minded the size either, in fact we always requested buildings further from the main areas because it was a nice walk and we were closer to the bus stops. SSR is no where near as big as POR, our last trip we were in the Paddocks and had no problem at all with the walks. I would say it feels much smaller and is easier to get around.

We miss POR but love SSR!

We just got back from a trip to SSR. It is very big and it is not even near completion. At this point, the resort is approx as large as OKW-- which is a very large resort. Upon completion SSR will be even bigger.
Just to give you an idea of how spread out the resort is; we were in the last building in Congress Park--to walk to the main pool, Artist Palette, the front desk, store, boat dock, etc., was 1.25 miles round trip. We were very surprised at just how spread out the resort was and just how far we were from the food court, etc., so we measured it with our pedometers.
It was quite a distance from the main hub of the resort but we had an amazing view of DTD and of the boats going by.

Our jogging map says it is only 1.44 miles around both CP and Paddocks starting your run at the main pool turn right at first building CP run along side the lake to last building turn left and head back to first right and go around the Paddock section all the way back to the main pool, all this is only 1.44 miles. :cool1:

I stayed a couple of nights at SSR in May. When those buildings toward the west nearest the golf course are finished, SSR looks like it will be a huge resort.

OKW buildings have three stories; SSR has five.

It is big. But, if you don't want to walk too far to the main building - you could request to be in the Springs section.

SSR only has 4 stories. It may look like 5 but there are only 4.
Here is a map I printed off from Webmaster Doc's website to show the floors and what rooms are located where.

http://disneydoc.homestead.com/SSRFloor.html

And while there are a lot of bldgs they aren't very spread out. They seem to be very compacted compared to some of the other spread out resorts. At least this is my perception.

The jogging trail right now is 8 furlongs which = a mile. When all the blgs and jogging trails are complete it will be 16 furlongs or 2 miles. So unless everyone is going a super round-a-bout way to get to places it isn't that long.

We to stayed in one of the farther blgs in Congress Park, not the very last but the one next to it. It only took us 4 minutes tops (not walking fast) to get to the pool and main area.

Of course, its all about perception and perception doesn't necessarily equate reality.

Yea thats what Im saying, we my Dh and I ran every morning followed the map provided and all the way around CP and Paddocks was only 1.44. We kept seeing those furlong signs but did not know there distance , thanks for the forlong info, all in all SSR is really not as large as it seems. :cool1:

We walked for fitness almost every morning we were there. We never used our vehicle to get to the main pool/AP area, we always walked there too. Im no fitness guru either. Just enjoying the beautiful walks.

It never took us more than 8 minutes to get from our bldg to the main area and that is at a "ice cream cone" pace because we normally were licking on one from our freezer. :rotfl:

We were in Congress Park, 1 bldg away from DTD Marketplace entrance.

We also rode the Surrey Bike loop and that is .8 miles total. It is marked on the map that is affixed to the bikes.

That loop starts at Community Hall down to Congress Park's First Bldg, across the main street, onto the Paddock loop walkway, around the Paddock Lake past the footbridge, onto the Springs walkway past the Springs Bus stop, back across the street and return to Community Hall. Total .8 mile

The Paddocks footbridge cuts right across the lake, cutting that walk in half to the main areas. Im estimating less than 4/10th of a mile, because that walk is all bridge and then 1 bldg length to the main area.

I think the resort is perceived larger than what it is. The new area furthest to the guard shack will add distance and not sure how they will address that because the golf course will prevent a bridge or walkway to cut across, but the 3 areas that are currently open are manageable.

I think some of the "size" concerns are based on the number of rooms when completed. My sense is that SSR has a similar footprint to OKW, POR, CBR regarding the number of acres it occupies although it seems no more spread out than any of those resorts ... and actually seems smaller to me than POR or CBR in terms of the space it occupies.

At this moment, SSR has a total of 12 buildings with 552 villas (840 counting lock-offs as 2 rooms). Each building is four stories and has 20 dedicated 2BR villas, 24 lock-offs and 2 GVs. When completed next year, the 18 buildings will make 828/1260 total villas.

By comparison, OKW has 531 villas with a max of 761 counting lock-offs as 2 villas. OKW is comprised of 49 buildings - some buildings are only 2 stories tall with 6 villas (max of 10 with lock-offs) and most have 3 stories. The 49 buildings are fairly spread out, but even the those farthest from HH are about a 10 minute walk to that location.

Boy, as long as it isn't as big as Fort Wilderness, I think I will be okay with it! :teeth: We stayed there last winter in one of the cabins and wow - THAT is what I call a spread out resort! Plus it seems like you're able to drive a car around SSR, whereas FW, just golf cart parking throughout. If they start renting a fleet of golf carts for $50 a day at SSR, that is the point at which I will be come concerned! :rotfl:

For what it is worth..... I agree with you. I think SSR was a big mistake in the overall scheme of DVC and I wish it never happened. ( My apologies to all who own there, no offense intended, I just don't like the place). No, I'm not stirring the pot. No flames please.

We took the main paths from the very last villa in the last building at CP to the main pool etc. The fartherest distance from our villa was to the boat dock, which was 1.24779 miles round trip. Artist Palette, the front desk, etc were slightly less, but not by much. We measured this on our pedometers. Maybe we missed some short cuts which would have made this distance less; I am not sure. But that was our experience.
Not giving an opinion of the resort; just answering the original question of how spread out SSR is.

Yes we all know it has a lot of rooms, but the question was how far it is to walk from one area to the other. :cool1:

What would you rather have there?

we just got back from "home" SSR and there are smaller pools in every group areas, the paddock as one between complexs housing 5436 and 5501 that is very walkable for paddock guests,in congress complexes there is pool between complexes 2201 and 1836, and in springs you are closest to main pool and no way is it a long walk. and we were told as there build there will be pools in each section as there are now. we were in complex at paddock in room 4501 and it was easy walk to main buildings for breakfast visiting with others along the way and enjoying the beauty of SSR. there is a walk bridge connecting sections across the lake to main area. we filled our mugs to walk over in our home and filled them up on return trip in food court after breakfast for walk back home. we stayed at OKW the first week on rented points and it was nice we waited sometimes 10 to 15 minutes for buses while at SSR we never waited more then 5 minutes, we loved our new purchase at ssr and will enjoy the added 12 years.
