Boy, was todays Oprah show very sad!! :sad1: I could not hold in the tears. I sat there and hugged my dog almost through the whole show-and he ain't little! I feel like being extra nice to my dog, Droopy, today.(yes he's a Basset) Today I will give him the whole Beggin Strip and not just half!

Oh No.........I tivoed it for this afternoon. Oprah is on in Miami at 4:00.......will I really cry? I kinda figured that. I can't even watch the commercial with the dog in the kennel that doesn't get picked (now they have a new one showing him running around with his new owners). Get the kleenex I guess!:sad1:

The TIVO is set, I'm looking forward to it. I really hope it makes a difference. I'm not a huge Oprah fan, but she's got quite the voice.

I know I couldn't handle it. Like a pp, I can't handle the dog food commercials with the poor dogs in the shelter. I just wish I could take them all. :sad1:

we get it at 4 here...I am still undecided. I am already very aware of the issue and don't know that I want to go through the emotion. IF I do watch - I will be the same as the OP!!!!! I do the same thing - hug my lovable mutt - after that adoption commercial (Pedigree?)airs - EVERY time!!!! Right now, the lovable mutt is on my "bad list" 'cause he has recently decided to chew on the toilet paper....good thing is sooooo lovable!!!!!!

I really hope the "Oprah effect" helps to spread awareness and open people's minds and hearts!!!!!!!

(just saw B52s are on Ellen - I will tape Oprah and watch Ellen - that way I can take break from the emotion when I need to!!!!)

Thanks for the warning, I may delete this from my dvr without watching. I can barely handle watching Animal Cops, and that's only because they usually can charge the bad guy or at worst, rescue and rehab the pet in question.

Am I going to cry? I've been a hormonal mess lately and I love my animals, so maybe I won't watch it.

I cryed. I feel bad that I got my dog at a pet store. Oprah said she will never get another dog except from an animal shelter.

This show came about from a billboard that was put up by her studios in Chicago that was asking her to do a show about puppy mills.

I just don't know if I can bring myself to watch it. :sad1:

It hasn't aired here yet and this is what I keep thinking. I have it set to Tivo it, but I just know that I will cry the whole time. I can't handle watching some of the shows on Animal Planet.

Here is what I posted on another thread here on the Dis Board . . .

I have never bought an animal from a breeder, nor would I.

These puppy mills create false documents on the animals for unsuspecting buyers. Not one puppy mill rescue that I have has any sort of medical records that come with the fur baby when they were rescued. :sad2:

Heck, if I'm not a purebred, nor do I have "papers", then why should my fur babies? ;)

As far as I am concerned, those involved in puppy mills should be made to live in small, cramped dirty cages with filthy water to drink and food "only when it is convenient to feed them". Hey, that's how they treat the little fur creatures. But hey, someone would say, "Gee, that is so inhumane". Well . . . :rolleyes1

Here are my three rescues from a puppy mill . . .

Pebbles -- Four years ago she was rescued from a house of 300 dogs (yep, that's not a typo, folks) and it took a vet team and me over a month to get her back to health. It has taken me 3 years to get her to finally take a treat from some people's hands. To this day NO ONE can pick her up but me. Isn't she a doll?

Gidget -- Three and a half years ago I got this little darling. She was rescued from a house of 135 dogs. When I got her, she was light brown with dark brown spots. As you can see, she is really white with black patches! The run-off from her filth was incredible! It took months for the groomer and I to grow out and cut her urine-stained fur. Here is the little baby . . .

Meeko -- Yep, he's my man of the house! He was rescued from a house of 35 dogs. He weighed 3 1/2 pounds and was almost bald when rescued 3 years ago (he was full grown). He is now a healthy and happy 7 pound, fully coated cutie . . .

Now I'm not saying that my fur babies are spoiled or anything, but after their weekly baths and before I finish making the bed, I toss their blankets (freshly heated from the dryer, of course) onto the bed and they snuggle down. I love this picture . . .

I love my rescues! :lovestruc

Ok, I'm trying to watch it (no promises though that I'll keep watching it) and I'm already crying. I didn't know that Oprah's dog, Sofie, passed away this year. What a wonderful video tribute and what a beautiful song. My baby passed away in October so it was a tear jerker to see! :sad1:

I forgot to put the DVR on so I will miss it but it sounds as if I need too. We have adopte 3 greyhounds that came from the tracks all over the country,
1 from Iowa and 1 from Wis. and the other from Fl and we are waiting to get our male's sister from WI right now.

I know how bad these poor babies have it when they have no one to turn to and no room to run and only a small crate to live in and only get potty breaks to get out of them.

Thank you for posting this thread

We went to the rescue here and they wanted $450 apiece for their dogs. We just could not afford that. It was heinous. Who can afford $450 for a mixed breed dog? We ended up getting our long haired mini dachsund without papers from someone who's dog's had accidently had puppies for $100 after going to several rescues that left my allergies in shreds..... I was all up for saving a dog but I feel like some of the rescues are in it for a buck. Which is disappointing. We also went to the Humane Society. The Dogs were all around $150 and filthy. My allergies were so bad that I had an asthma attack as did my son and we had to leave. We felt terrible leaving them but would have felt even more terrible if we had had to bring the poor pup back....

One reason for high costs of dogs in rescue is overhead. People volunteer their time and spend a lot of their own money on dogs -- sometimes rehabilitating dogs at a cost of $1000. To recoup some of the money, they charge more for young pups, or very young adult healthy dogs.

I've never known a rescue to ask $450 -- my guess is that they're not so much in it for the $$ as probably very poor money managers. Sadly, in rescue sometimes you need to make a call -- invest a year and >$1000 in rehabilitating a dog that might never find a home or take a year to find it, or use that same money to save 3-4 healthy dogs during the same time period? It's a sad and very hard decision to make, and some people simply are incapable of making it and find themselves with very large deficits.

Not that rescue should ever be run at a profit, but if a group is constantly too full to take perfectly healthy dogs at risk of being put down because they take on too many dogs that are going to be very hard to adopt, you have to start to question priorities.

I find it interesting that while Oprah has done this show that she has never mentioned a word about Michael Vick and dog fighting. I've been waiting for her to have that show being the dog lover that she is.

Wow, that was heartbreaking..4 out of 50 dogs placed for adoption in Ft. Worth Texas!?!?! Our local animal control places something like 97%.

What I didn't understand about the puppy mills is why they kept them in cages. Most of them looked like they had acres and acres of land. Can't you at least build a big ole fence?
