At our town school, class lists and bus scedules are posted in mid-August on the school's front doors (at 4:00 right before the principal goes on vacation! Good thinking! LOL). That day is always big for kids since they find out who their teacher and classmates will be. As a parent I like it so I don't have to hear "who else is in my class?", and I know who to watch out for (i.e. who DD is a little too chatty with during class).

Well a few days ago, we were told that students will receive their teacher's names by mail. Someone complained about invasion of privacy, safety, etc.

I like the way they've done it, but I figured it was only a matter of time before they stopped it. What are your thoughts?

I don't know..We have always either received it by mail, or found out the first day...

I love the fact of the bus routes ahead of time. That seems to be very sensible indeed...

For my DD, it would not matter who is in her class:rotfl: Chatty will UNFORTUNATELY find someone...But I do see your point..Perhaps it was too many requests for change ahead of time? By parents not happy with the teacher choice ahead?

We've always found out via mail - bus routes are always the same so no surprises there.

Our grade school one is still posted but not the bus schedule (well...maybe but not who is ON the bus). My grade school kids don't ride the bus but I think last year the route was on there, you just had to know which stop was yours, as they offer a "fee bus" so if you are close enough you can pay $600/year for your child to ride the bus. In other words, you don't qualify for the free bus but they still offer bus service. I'll drive/walk for the $600.

I know Middle School everything is mailed. I know the year my oldest went to MS, the principal just said "don't bother using the phone that day because every MS in town will be calling their friends to find out what team they are on". :lmao: Ours is individualized scheduling though when you get to MS so that makes more sense -- it gives you your locker # with combination plus your entire schedule.

It's usually posted the week before school starts (I forget, we will be getting our registration stuff for next year tomorrow, so I'm sure the information will be in there). I like it posted but can see both sides.

We always foudn out by mail. The bus routes used to be printed in our local paper but they stopped that last year (concerned with pedophiles). On 'meet the teacher' night about a week b4 school starts they pick up their bus schedule.

The principal at our school stopped it last year. Everyone is peeved.

It was quite the fun day for the kids. You can go and see who is in your class. The school store was open. Chance to see the kids that you hadn't seen during the summer. There was food available for whoever wanted it. You knew that this meant it was the end of the summer.

Oh well.......rumor has it that this principal is retiring soon. :woohoo:

Their teacher for the next year is on the last report card they receive on the last day of school. The kids also know who from their present class will be in their class the next year.

I would rather find out by mail (although it doesn't answer "who is in my class?"). We get both class assignment and bus route in the mail - and bus routes are published in the school district newsletter.:)

I can't imagine the school wants the usual disgruntled parents right there at their doorstep to complain!!!!:rotfl2:

In NY, it's by mail, In CA, it was posted at the school. I guess, overall, I like it posted, so DD can see who else is in her class.

Howeer, it becomes asocial event for the kids and they stand in front of the baord forever, to see who's in what class. And it takes forever to try and actually see what class your kid is in. Tried going an hour later, I wasn't the only one with this brite idea.

In my sons elementary school they put the teacher for the next year on the report card the last day of school. They also take the kids to their class for the next year during the last year of school to meet the teacher and see who will be in their class.

I really like that idea!!!! My DD tends to stress about it a little ("will she get the mean one, etc...")- this way she would just know ahead of time!!!!

I say you're lucky!

In my kids' school, you don't know who your teacher or classmates are until the 1st day of school.

It's a day of total chaos, where 750 students and their parents walk aimlessly around the school yard trying to find their teachers:confused:

The teaches don't even hold up signs like "Grade 1" to make it easier:headache:

Bus Routes/Schedules posted on the front doors of the schools, about 10 days to a week before the kids go back.

They find out their teachers on the report cards from the last day of school.

It is so nice. The teachers give the kids a pencil and a note that says "I can't wait to have you in my class in the fall!"

It's written on my kids' report card, which they get on the last day of school. I wish they would find out what class they are in a few weeks before school starts, because you always see kids crying on the last day because they're not in the class they wanted, not with the kids they wanted, etc. (One year it was one of mine.)

We also find out from the report card on the last day. Bus schedules come by mail.

I would hate the posting it on the school thing. It sounds very disorganized, is one more thing to do, and I like having the kids being able to figure out who will be in their class over the summer.

At our local school it is posted the Friday before school starts at 3PM. At this point anyone who has been in the building leaves! I understand why they wait so long. Classes have to be balanced out, etc. One year so many kids came into DS's grade they had to add a teacher--if they had promised the other 75% of the kids a particular teacher, all the kids who had moved in would be lumped together. Plus if a teacher moves or retires after school is out it would make a mess, and every year 3 or 4 kids move away, and classes have to be equaled out. I think they have a general idea about who will be in what class, but to make sure no one has to be disappointed they wait to announce it.
Keep in mind now they register the elementary kids on Thursday--but they still don't know who they have for sure. That is weird.
The open house is the Monday before school starts (which is on a Wednesday). We get to meet the teacher then. It's only a hassle because ALL of our schools have open house on the same night with staggered times--so we have to meet 6 HS teachers, then drive to the junior high and meet 6 or 7 teachers, then to the elementary.
Bus schedules are in the local paper the week before school starts.

At both my DS schools, they post the kids names, room and teachers names when they go meet the teacher which is on Thurs before the first day of school. They get the bus info from their teacher which so far hasn't changed.

That's the way it is here for Elementary school. In Middle School for 6th grade they go a couple of days before school starts and are put in WEB (where everybody belongs) groups with 8th grade leaders and orientated into school that way. High School a similar thing for the freshmen.
