I am not very computer savvy, will I be able to figure the Gypsy out???

promo for right now is 2 gypsy carts already loaded with 5 more freebies...printing press, tags bags & more, Christmas, blackout letter and Indie art...none of which I have....

so should I get it? do I need to get the DVD for it too?

what are the benefits....I read some of the pluses...will like the welding letter part....what else do I need to know???

TIA

I don't like my Gyspy. First off, the screen is way too small (I've gotten very used to using Cricut Design Studio on my laptop and the screen is WAY bigger). Secondly, the battery in mine stinks. I don't think I can go more than a couple hours without charging it. And, I have never ever been impressed with the search function on either CDS or the G.

Now, on the other hand...They FINALLY updated the software so I can design in CDS and transfer the file to the Gypsy. Yes, it's an extra step, and sometimes the software crashes on me, but when it works, it's an extremely nice perk, because I can design something using a dozen different cartridges and not have to ever swap out. So, I can bring my G, Expression, and laptop to a crop and never have to bring ONE cartridge, which is nice.

So, as much as I hate it, I'm warming up to it. I will never get used to the small screen, my eyes are just too bad for the size, but I do appreciate that I can basically use it as a jukebox.

HTH!

so would I be better off getting the CDS??? or both to work together??? I just don't understand how it all works I guess

I *think* you can use the trial version of CDS with the Gypsy, but I'm not positive. It will all work together.

so on CDS, if I want to weld letters together from a cart...just program that in, do I have to have the Cart plugged in too, or do you upload the carts onto the CDS program like on the gypsy?

The current trial of CDS should have all the cartridges listed. There is a way to tell it which cartridges you have, so that when you design, you will only use the ones you have. You design using the cartridges you have (you can only cut from carts you have or have linked to your Gypsy). Say you want to weld "Wedding" you put the word on your mat, nudge them all together and click weld. Diane has some welding tutorials, here.

I will go look at it...so another question...with the 7 carts that will be on the gypsy, if I get the CDS will they link up to the CDS to play around with? or only the physical carts I have will be able to be used with the CDS??

No, you don't need the physical carts to use CDS. They are all included in Design Studio, but you need to link the other carts you have (physical ones) to the Gyspy. Then you design in CDS, and you save as a ".gyspy" file, connect the Gypsy to your computer and transfer the file to the Gypsy, then you link the Gpysy to the machine and hit cut. I know it sounds complicated, but it's not.

Okay, thanks for your help....off to do a little shopping to see where I can find a decent price for both!!

I guess it will be an early Valentine day present for me !

I like my gypsy for the ease that I do not have to bring cartridges to swaps. Plus my neighbor and I never buy the same cartridge and we can share them, save money that way. The gypsy does weld and is easy to use. I also have SCAL (Sure Cuts A Lot) and MTC (Make the Cut). I personally recommend MTC if you are going to get a computer based program for your cricut. It is easy to use, easy to weld, and use can get tons of svg images off line for free or purchase them for a very cheap price ($1 to $2). Just my opinion. Since I do have my gypsy, which I like, I will never get CDS because it is so similar. I do understand how the screen would be hard to see for some though because it is small:) Then you can still use your cricut cartridges with your cricut or gypsy, but get more options with a different computer program like MTC and SCAL from svg files. I couldn't live without my gypsy or MTC.

so does the MTC link with your cricut carts too? I'm not very savvy how the computer program works...if not, how does it get cut on the cricut?

No MTC is not a provocraft item, just works with the cricut or other die cut machines. It uses various fonts that come on the program or others you can find on-line for free. You pretty much never have to buy a font cartridge again. I do sometimes still buy shape cartriges I like for my cricut, but no more fonts for me because they come with the program (which is about $60 ish I believe). It is very easy to use and very easy to import images from on-line. Watch a few youtube tutorials and that may help you see for both the gypsy or MTC??

Okay, thanks....maybe I will start with MTC and see how it goes...did find in on-line for around $58.00!!

so I am going to think this all over tonight....if anyone else has info they would like to share about their gypsy or MTC, etc. please share!!

Thanks!!

would share about gypsy but I'm still learning.

I like it. I can sit with the kids or watch tv, make layer upon layer of designs and then go into my room and scrap later.

I use SCAL, Sure Cuts A Lot, which is similar to MTC. I prefer it to MTC, but only because it's what I'm used to.

You don't have to BUY Design Studio, you should be able to use the trial program for free with the Gypsy.

I would recommend SCAL over Design Studio, but since I'm 99.9% sure you can just use the free program, you don't need to BUY it.

Again, using the Gypsy as a jukebox is what had me sold. If PC had been able to get it to work sooner, I would be a staunch supporter. It just bothers me that instead of perfecting what they've got, they go and introduce new things.

If you have the money, I would buy the gypsy (which you should be able to get for $100 or less) and either MTC/SCAL (which should be similar in price as well). I have both. I think MTC is a little more user friendly for the technically challenged-LOL, but is very similar to SCAL- so you can't go wrong with either program really. You can download both MTC and SCAL trial versions for free and play around with them. See which one you like better?

I just got my Gypsy from Oh My Crafts and I thought it was a good deal so take a look there. I have only had it a day but like it so far. The only thing is I still need my handbooks sometimes but theres and app for that for my ipod touch so I will just get that.

I got my Gypsy in May for $99. I love it. I do use the magnifying feature often because of my vision issue. I love not having to bring all my carts to a crop, I can just bring my Gypsy. For my birthday I got an E, so I gave to MomE my baby bug, and now after I link my cartridges, I give them to her to use.

Love being able to work on projects outside of my computer, scrapping room, ie when DD is watching one of her movies, then start the cuts when I am overseeing tubby time.

Anything feature I like is seeing is what all the various carts can do without owning it. It's kind of like window shopping.

The only feature I don't care for is when I clink on linked cartridges and do a search for a certain item, it searches thru all carts I have and all the ones I don't.

But for the most part, I love my Gypsy. Very glad I bought it.

so after looking over everything last night and shopping different sites I ordered my gypsy this morning :cool1: from Oh My Crafts!!!

$129.99 w/free shipping
got the gypsy combo with extra 5 carts when I register it, fabric case, silicon sleeve, 3 extra stylus' and car charger!

so I think it's a good deal!! will play with it for awhile and then decide if I'm getting the other computer programs later!

thanks for all your help!

How does MTC work with different machines?:confused3 I only have a xyron PCS:headache: and I have a few books with it but I can't see how I'd link a computer-based system?
