OK, am I being a prude here?

if you're a prude, then so am i. no way in the world i'd let my 7 year old (if i had one-DD is now 12) listen to that garbage. as i said, my DD is 12, and doesn't listen to ke$ha. probably doesn't even know who she is. her mp3 player consists of miley cyrus, selena gomez, the jonas brothers, nsync, backstreet boys and some classic pop and disco. we've never had an issue with inappropriate music...at least, not yet.

They don't even play that stuff at our schools events, the kids are really not into Miley anymore or the Jonas brothers. Most don't know who the backstreet boys or nsync are LOL. We do ask the DJ's for the school events that are there not play things like Flo Rida- you spin me right round or anything that has major foul language in it- but Tic Tok is played as are many other songs. We did have to run up to one at one event and ask that he stop playing the song he had put on- he said kids had requested it but he really should have known better- he had on Birthday Sex by Jerimih (not sure of that spelling)...but geez...

I just wanted to say I realized last yr. that I learned what the Go-Go's song, "Our Lips are Sealed" was about. I can't believe that never dawned on me..duh.:lmao:

:scared1: NO WAY! I loved the Go-Go's and that was my favorite song for the longest time. I NEVER thought it had an underlying meaning. Oh, wow.
Well, at least it was kind of a positive message!

OMG, i'm SO glad someone got that DJ to take that song off! talk about inappropriate! my DD is a little behind the music curve-she just got an mp3 player a few months ago. the nsync...well, she's been a fan since she was a baby-loves justin timberlake, but his stuff is too nasty for her to listen to, lol. the backstreet boys, classic pop and disco came from her listening to MY mp3 player before she got hers. we live in a pretty rural area, and most of the kids don't know who's hot and who's not, just what they like, lol.

I love that line in the song:
"And now the dudes lining up cause they hear we got swagger/
But we kick them to the curb unless they look like mick jagger"

has kesha SEEN mick jagger? :confused3: Maybe she had brushed her teeth with a bottle of jack before writing that line...

Oh, and in Your Love Is My Drug she randomly says "I like your beard"

I think she's funny. Not kid appropriate, but funny.

She was on Saturday Night Live where in theory it should be live and sounded quite awful. Her secret is auto tune, which can make anyone sound good. On XM radio Opie and Anthony took a 50+ year old homeless girl and recorded the song and did auto tune post processing. It was nearly identical to the original.

:rotfl2: That's hysterical but I can totally believe it!:thumbsup2

idk, she probably has no clue what the lyrics even mean, she probably just thinks the song is fun and catchy.

when i was around 11 or so, there was a song that was popular called "Pony" .....i knew all the lyrics and i danced to it and sang along...only to find out YEARS later what it meant. boy was i shocked that my 11 year old self listened to that lol but i had no clue what the lyrics meant.

Right Round by Flo Rida doesn't have foul language tho....there's no swearing in it.....:confused3

Just out of curiousity, where does Justin Bieber fall in the teen music spectrum? My youngest is 26 so I'm pretty out of touch. But to be honest, he does kind of remind me of Donny Osmond back in the day. Modernized for sure, but "clean cut" love songs, on the surface. Opinions?

Funny I should find this thread tonight. DD13 downloaded that song and I was none too happy, now DD8 is asking for it on her iPod. :sad2: Drew the line on that one and told her she'd have to wait until she's 13 like DSis. ;)

That's the problem I run into with DD8, she's exposed to SO much more by having an older sister. Sometimes I cringe when she goes to a friend's house who is an oldest because I know they won't have the same exposure to tween/teen things as DD.

:rotfl::lmao::rotfl2:I'm so out of touch with what kid's listen to I don't even know who Kesha is. That is so funny! Mick Jagger looks like HE's been kicked into a curb a few times!

I'm usually pretty liberal with music, and my DD9 loves to sing along to all kinds. But when I heard her singing "Tik-Tok", I had to draw the line. I don't want my 9-year old singing, "Everybody gettin' crunk, boys try to touch my junk, gotta slap 'em if they're gettin' too drunk..."

Ick.

(btw, "crunk" is a combination of being high on chronic and drunk)

Is it really? I had no idea! Everyone around here uses it as a combo of Crazy and Drunk. :rotfl:

I'm just gonna chime in here that one of the bands I listen (Family Force 5) to uses the word "crunk" quite frequently. They're a Christian band and I DOUBT they'd use it to mean that. When they use it, they use it to mean to have a good time.

OMG. This thread made me think of 6th Grade Catholic School.

The nun who taught my class had us fill out a get-to-know-you questionnaire at the beginning of the year. Favorite color, favorite book, etc. There was a question -- What is your favorite song?

I put "SHE'S TIGHT" by Cheap Trick. :scared1::scared1:

I loved that song and I had NOOOOO idea what it meant. I thought "she's tight" meant "she's not very nice" or "she's cheap with money."

I didn't get in trouble for it or called to the principal's office or anything. Who knows, maybe the nun didn't know what it meant either. ;)

Well, the meanest mommy in the whole wide world (I wear my title with honor) may have redeemed herself. I spent an hour with my daughter going through songs old and new and burned a new CD for her. Lots of nice dance tunes. A few that I thought about for a while. But enough that she's happy. Now I just have to listen to the Macarana and The Climb over and over and over again.

I'm not sure if you realize this but Macarena is a song about a couple who just got married and the girl is already cheating on her new husband. Heard that on the radio once when the song was a huge hit.

I would also say if you think Ke$ha is bad watch out for some of the newer stuff. I've heard this new song lately that has the lyrics "I should be a Flinstone because I'm gonna make your bed rock". not sure of the exact words as I change the radio station everytime that song starts.

i hate ke$ha. i dont want my 15 year old sisters listening to her music. fortunately, they have pretty good judgement.

it honestly makes me so sad that young girls are looking up to people like ke$ha as role models.

Bieber is out in the 5th grade in our school- I think they said one girl still likes him and "ewwwww"... I actually heard a song of his playing in Justice and asked my daughter what girl was singing that LOL...she said "mom, that is Justin Bieber-now you see why I don't like him" LOL...

No but we had the 4th grade boys last year telling the girls exactly what those lyrics meant !

My youngest is 13 and my oldest is 19 & a college freshman now. I find there are a lot more postives than negatives. But I do know what you mean as I am about 6yrs ahead of you.

And yes, things are different for other kids that are the "oldest". Funny thing is with my 13yo her BF's are all younger kids with older sibs. I think it is interesting.

Oh and my dd's listen to alternative rock which is so much better....lol.

I had to laugh at the part about Mick Jagger too. I had to show dd who Mick Jagger is and she said EWWWWWWWW. :lmao: Have you seen the video? The guy doesn't look like Mick but again EWWWWWWWW. :rotfl:

The one thing I have noticed dd and her friends, they like songs they can pick up the words too and sing easy enough. You know, some songs are just meant for singing. The girls like to all get in the back seat of my car and sing to the top of their lungs (such fun!). They really don't care what the words are or what they mean; they just want to sing to (kind of like the old American Bandstand phrase--its gotta beat and its easy to dance to; it has to "have words and be easy to sing to":rotfl:) So most of the time their reasons for liking a song have absolutely nothing to do with what it is or isn't actually saying.

USUALLY their are singing/shouting to Justin Beiber but the other stuff gets in there. Somebody asked about him earlier: he is like most teen pop idols, either they love him or they hate him.

Songs like Tick Tock don't stay around long and they (and we) will be on to something else. The other one popular around here is Lady Ga Ga's "telephone". As far as I can tell the song is fine, the video is stupid. Dd and her friends were so mad because #1 they can't even watch the video and #2 from what they have seen it has NOTHING to do with the song. I know that a lot of people don't like Lady GaGa either, but I will say that MOST of her songs have a bit more of a hidden meaning--its not just "out there" like Keisha or Rhianna (I was a bit shocked she sang that song on the NICK awards! She had to change the words).

I don't think anyone is considering kesha a role model. Being famous =/= role model.
