So we are leaving in 4 days for our cruise FINALLY and I saw this on another board and thought it was kind of interesting so I was wondering

How many of you CLEAN your house really good before you go on vacation???? I mean really clean it?? Am I the only psycho one here who makes sure there isnt a spec of dirt anywhere before I leave??? I spend the night before and if possible the day of cleaning my house like a madwoman!

I am just wondering if I am the minority or what?? Boring Sunday morning here in Freezing COLD Utah so thought I would just ask a dumb question just because! LOL

Not only will my house be spotlessly clean, it will be fully decorated for Christmas before I leave! )We have an artificial tree, so there's no safety hazard.)

This way, when I return home after my trip, the "post-cruise" letdown willbe offset slightly by the holiday festiveness of my house--and I won't have to run around like a madwoman the week before Christmas!

I am not an obsessive neatnik. That being said, I much prefer to come home to a clean house with clean sheets on the bed.

You're not alone. Having read this board I was so prepared and packed well in advance that I took the week before the cruise to make sure my house was clean, bills paid and everything that needed to be done when I got back was already done. We were on the Nov 2 cruise and returned last night after midnight after a 16 hour drive and I was so happy that I did clean before I left. I walked into a spotless house and there was nothing for me to do... until I woke up and realized I would be doing wash for the next three days.

Washing my floors (kitchen, hall & 3 bathrooms) Tues morn once DS goes back to school - we're both off Mon for Veterans Day - may do it tomorrow, who knows
Paying the bills on the 27th/28th since we leave on the 28th for 9 nights and I usually pay the bills on the 1st of the month.
If I get energetic I may vacuum my downstairs.

A majority of the Christmas presents will be bought and wrapped the weekend of the 23rd. We get in at midnight on the 7th of Dec. That Sun Im sure will be for laundry, food shopping, etc.

Then we only have 2 weekends till Christmas!

Im a neat freak....before I leave for vacation or not...I clean every inch of my house everyday. My friends call me Monica (Friends) my husband calls me anal. LOL

Yep, I clean, I organize, once I even sorted all the crayons by color!!! Coming home to a clean house is wonderful. Before a trip, I am very motivated and appreciative of my good fortune and it stimulates me to put my affairs in order. It's an added bonus to traveling for me. :smooth:

We'll be on the Nov 16th cruise, leaving this Wednesday for a couple of extra days of fun! And, yes, my house will be spotless when I leave. But even worse than that, I spent this whole morning cleaning out the chicken coop! Cleaned the floors, put in new wood shavings, etc. I just couldn't bear to leave the housesitter with a messy house or coop. My husband thinks I go overboard, but I really like to come home to a clean house. Oh well, we all have our compulsions hehehe:p

for me, there is no more of a let down that returning to a messed up house from vacation. I try to always have everything cleaned and all the laundry done before we leave...

We just like it that way , our Home is always spotless
Jen always works hard to keep it that way ....
she will change the sheets before we leave so it will be fresh.
come from growing up in a not so spotless enviroment ,,
Peter seems easier to keep up with if thing r always tidy

I wonder if there is a psychologist out there who can tell us why we need to do this. Our house is always clean, but not every room all at once is vaccumed and just perfect, so why does everything have to be this way before we leave on vacation. Hubby thinks I'm crazy, too. Are we afraid if a burglar comes in while we are gone, that it's not neat? An unexpected guest? Earn our way for the trip? Simply return to a perfect house?

It's just interesting why we feel we need to do this.
Tina :)

Welllll.....
Guess I'll be the lone dissenter here.....:)
As much as I would love to come home to a clean house....the reality of my vacations aren't like that!!
I usually work until the day before.....so between the 40-60 hour work week and the extra "getting ready" time....I'm doing good to leave the house still standing!! Do at least pick up the big pieces and make sure the beds are clean!
I always try to take an extra day off when we get home to catch up, though......

We'll be leaving January 6th for our Florida vacation and two cruises, and I definitely will vacuum and dust, make sure there are no dirty dishes in the sink, clean the bathrooms and have clean sheets on the beds, and make sure there's nothing in the frig that will "grow hair" while we're gone. :D I also want to have all the bills paid up, and take the Christmas tree and decorations down before we leave. It's not much fun to come home from vacation, having a mountain of laundry to do, and have to clean the house right away too....ugh!

I clean the house, but for only one reason...we have a pet sitter come in to take care of the cats and bird, and I don't want her to realize that we normally live in chaos!!!

I was so glad to see this thread! DH and I will be on our land/sea vacation the week before Christmas, and I spent the whole month of October getting my Christmas shopping done. I've set Thanksgiving as my target date to get all the wrapping done. Then it's Christmas cards and Christmas decorating. Somewhere between all that is raking all these darn leaves that are falling, and the mad cleaning of the house since Christmas is three days after we return and guess who is having Christmas at her house?

Then I have a bunch of other "little" chores, appointments, etc. that I keep saying I have to get done before the trip. It's like I think I'm leaving for a year instead of a week, and need to get all this stuff done!

So, I am very glad to see this thread and know there are others out there like me! :p

YES!!!! This is me too!!
I even get up early to wash, dry and re-make the bed before we leave on vacation!! My friends totally laugh at me.

I make sure I give a computer disk with all my important information on it to my parents~~you just never know!!

At times I think I do all of this...just in case someone breaks in while we are gone or that something might happen to us and they won't see my home in a mess~~go figure!!

Can't wait for the cruise!!!

One year I forgot to take the trash out before leaving for an 8 day trip. YUCK!!!! So now we leave a note on the door, its like a check list. Turn down the heat, unplug the important stuff and in bold letters TAKE OUT THE TRASH! Believe me it wasn't nice coming home too. I like to walk in from vacation to a clean house, because it makes it feel more like home. If you walk into a disaster, it makes it that much harder.

I like to have the house clean before vacation too. My fear is that something will happen while we are away- car accident etc.- and family and friends coming to visit will see a dirty house! Sounds morbid I know but you asked!

I'm all for a clean house upon returning. With the holidays fast approaching and all the stress that involves, I've decided to treat myself: I've hired someone to come in and "fall" clean the entire house, right down to cleaning windows and pulling out appliances. I've also arranged to have my fall yard clean-up done while we're away. Merry Christmas to me! The price of this upcoming Universal/Wonder vacation made the cost of these two services seem trivial, but PRICELESS. Now I can concentrate on the fun of Christmas shopping and wrapping and come home to virtually no stress (I hope) and enjoy the holiday parties, etc.

Yep, we'll clean too. The ONLY good thing about getting home is knowing that it looks halfway decent. Also, in my twisted brain I always worry that if something ever happened to us I wouldn't want anyone to have to come in and see the way we "really" live!
We're considering having our hardwood floors refinished while we're gone. Has anyone else done this?
