I have noticed a few threads concerning the oil spill and canceling ressies at VB for this summer-fall. We were unable to snag a ressie @ VB this summer (first time in over 10 yrs, :sad1:) So I rented a condo on Sanibel Island, actually was super excited due to the abundance of sea shells or so I have read that I would be encountering. Now I am starting to freak out about the oil spill. I have went through homeaway.com to rent and I have contacted them. A new cancelation policy has been dveloped because of the oil spill

I know I am coming off as being selfish but I feel like I'm in vaca limbo. I don't know if were going to Sanibel or not and I feel like I should start looking for a backup plan but I can't commit to it yet.

Any suggestions for a backup plan?

We did cancel our week at VB and I have booked at SSR. At 4 1/2 months that is all that was available.
Although I am very excited to be going to WDW during the F & W festival, I am disappointed at not going to VB. We had been looking forward to a week at the beach.

I would not cancel any vacations yet. Much is still unclear with the status of the oil spill and the carry on effects in the future. As of now, there is no clear indication of if or when this spill may transit into the Stream and whip around. There is still plenty of time and if there is a cancellation policy in place, you should be fine. I know that it is frustrating to be in limbo regarding vacation, but I would find it more frustrating to cancel something for what turns out to be no reason.

We did the exact same thing. Possible oil problems wasn't the only factor but it was one of them.

We have no intention of cancelling our July VB trip. As of now there are no issues and I personally don't expect any to develop. If oil enters the stream it will be quite a ways off shore and in deep water. Worst case scenario...I enjoy all VB's wonderful facilities and take my swims in the pool.

I'm no expert by any means, but I think the loop current is likely to pull the spill around the bottom of FLA and up the east coast. Most of it anyways. Maybe this will act like a natural fencing for the Florida Gulf areas. Hopefully the greater agitation of the ocean will cause it to break up and sink. This form of oil is bio-degradable and consumed by micro-organisms.

Sanibel is very cool! An abundance of shells (seashell capital). Also, you can walk out a hundred yards (my guestimate) in ankle deep to waist deep water (depending on tide level) and you can see your feet and all kinds of small water life. Have a great time.

Same here. We've got 6 nights booked at VB for July and we will be there. There's nothing that I've seen so far that makes me think that we should change our plans.

I'm hopeful! Never stayed at VB, so this will be a first for 4 nights mid August! Can't wait!

I'll "take my chances" and wait and see!

Worst case, we'll use that gorgeous pool! Too nice a resort to pass up the reservation we have!

For all the summer Vero travelers, cross fingers and toes!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

We are keeping our VB ressie for the end of July/early Aug. Even if the ocean is off limits, relaxing at the resort is better for our family than the heat and crowds of WDW!

We are NOT cancelling our 4 nights either. Arriving on July 21st..... Our first visit and we plan on enjoying it oil spill or not.

This is a situation where weather is the wild card that makes it impossible to say where, when and how bad coastal beaches will be affected.

This link is a good source of information, including computer projections of the loop current. It is also possible that the current will be pinched off by an eddy forming off of the south Florida gulf coast. That would be good for the Keys and East Coast and bad for Mexico and Texas.

More importantly we are likely to have a very active storm season, closer to 2005 which brought quite a bit of tragedy and havoc to the gulf states. El Nino has subsided and gulf water temperatures are rising -- all quite conducive to storm formation.

We go to Sanibel every summer - it's a wonderful place! We are scheduled to leave on June 24 for 9 nights. We will be going oil or not, but hopefully not! Have a great time!

We just made reservations earlier this week for VB for arrival on Saturday 7/24 and departing on Monday 7/26, then heading to WDW until 8/3.

Its our first trip to VB and wanted to start our vacation on a slower pace. I have a cash reservation for the 24th, hoping a waitlist will come through, and staying on points on the 25th. We were looking for a studio or inn room and nothing was available. So.... not too many members canceling yet.
