O'Hana's for picky children

I just read that kids can order from the Kona cafe menu if they don't like the food served at O'Hana's.

My question is this: If my DD picks something off of the KCafe menu do I pay for the item that she ordered or for the O'Hana meal even though she doesn't eat it?

We are on MYW dining and I was thinking that if we get charged for the item off the Kcafé menu we might pay out of our pocket and save that TSmeal for later. If she is charged for O'Hana, we will go ahead and use the plan.

I hope I'm not confusing anyone!!!!

TIA

We have eaten at Ohanas 8 times and DD always get the hot dog and fries from Kona's. We are only charged for that which is around $5.

I only wish our server would have given us this option to order from kona cafe. My daughter ate some rice and her slush bucket that is it and we were charged a full meal. Our server didnt give us that option and I wasnt aware of that when we went .
I will know for next time if we go to ohanas again not a forsure for us.

My son has food allergies so he couldn't eat at 'Ohana. The fixed him some chicken strips. I think I was charged for them and not for the 'Ohana dinner.

Both times we have eaten there our server has asked right away if the kids just want regular "kid food." My daughter had her favorite, chicken strips, and my son had a hot dog. We were charged for the kid's meal, not the Ohana price.

I agree with Cameo, we had the same experience last year. No problem getting kids meals (and getting charged for the price for the kids meal). If your waiter doesn't ask, just request it. And IIRC, there's a line at the top of the menu that reads something like, "Alternative children's menu selections available."

Actually here's a link to the Ohana menu... http://allearsnet.com/menu/menu_oh.htm. You'll see the blurb about children's selections there. Don't stress about it... its not a problem, they deal with kids meals every day.

Our waitress told my girls first thing, do you want a hot dog and fries? I could have stuffed a sock in her mouth. This was my chance to get something other than fries and hotdogs in them. She did not charge us for it.

The only meat DD eats is the prechewed varieties- hot dogs, burgers, nuggets, sausage- so we were apprehensive about O'Hana's, but it was where I wanted to go for our anniversary. DD(9 at the time) ate the rice and picked at the salad and pot stickers, loved the bread, and was pretty much "making do" with this as her meal. The server noticed and asked if everything was OK, to which she replied, "the food is fine...I just don't eat meat". He immediately asked if she'd like some mac and cheese and brought it out ASAP. DD cheered up considerably, and of course she adored the pineapple with caramel sauce for dessert. We didn't pay any extra, just the regular kid's buffet charge, and considering that she ate from both menus and we *stuffed* ourselves with shrimp and steak, we felt it was a fair deal.

We ate there and we asked if it was possible for my fussy 6yr old to have something different. He had Mac N Cheese and then ended up mooching off of me and dh anyway.

We loved this Place food was awesome!!!

I would have been PO'd too! I am amazed at how many people here allow there kids to eat all this overprocessed high fat fried foods that is on the kids menu. Most of the food in WDW is pretty tame, even in the more "exotic" restaurants. Heck O'hanas is nothing but grilled meats! WDW dining is a great way to introduce new and interesting foods. I can understand keeping small delicate palates away from spicy foods but there really shouldn't be a designation between "kid" food and "adult" food. I am so glad as a child that my parents took us to so many interesting places around the world and I thankfully experienced many cultures and food because the majority of the world does NOT exist on PB&J mac & cheese and chicken nuggets!

We must have got the wrong server. My kids were also offered the Kona Cafe menu. We were told upfront that since we would have to pay the regular kids price for a meal at O'Hana, they could have "all they could eat" from the Kona Cafe menu. Of course, neither kid even finished their burger and fries. You should check with your server before you order.

OK here is a Crazy question. Will they let an adult order off of the Kona menu?? We are a party of nine, and my sister is the pickiest eater in the world. Worse than her two kids(4 and 7) :rotfl2: . We all know that there is nothing at Ohana she will like. Any suugestions, other than telling her NOT to go?? :confused3

Thanks,

DD is 6 and I used to classify her as a picky eater. Turns out she has acid reflux and it is not easy to treat. I know this isn't the case with all children as there are simply kids who are picky eaters. But a vacation to WDW might not be the time to argue over food, but let the kids enjoy nuggets to their heart's desire. We as adults splurge on vacation as well and at home, we can try different things. DD has actually started to try new things and I don't think she has a problem at Ohana's at all. She ate there 2 years ago and was fine. But I am not sure why this comment was necessary to the OP question???

Because some posters think they parent better then others. They tend to look down on anyone that lets their kids eat nuggets while theirs joyfully munch on carrot sticks. When we go on vacation we, and that means the kids too, eat what we want. It is definitely more enjoyable that way.

If you go back and read my original post it was directed at a comment another respondent posted where the waitress automatically offered unhealthy over processed hot dogs and fries to the children. It just angers me to see kids sitting around getting fat from all the horrible food and as parents they are condoning it. 99.9% of the kids menu is fried, cover with cheese and generally lacking in anything leafy or vegetable category. Sure vacation is not the time to argue over food, but neither is vacation the time to teach kids table manners. All of these things are learned over time with constant positive reinforcement. I am all for indulging children but having them fear any food that doesn't come in a Happy Meal Box is a sad state of affairs.

Sorry your daughter suffers from acid reflux. My mother has battled it for years, but treating it with fried fatty "kid" food is a horrible antidote. The acid reflux really has nothing to do with the OP's original question either since you are reprimanding me for going off topic.

Glad to hear your daughter is intelligent and bright to start trying new and interesting foods. Most bad habits are learned very early in life.
