O'Hana's for picky children

We are hoping to try OHanas with our kids this August. We definitely would prefer for the 5 and 6 yo to order off Kona's kid menu, though. They love that processed stuff, and don't get it too often at home. Vacation is when we ALL let it go a bit. That is why we allow our kids to eat hot dogs, chicken nuggets, etc. With French Fries, even. I eat ice cream :mickeybar , etc at WDW too, because it is how we choose to enjoy vacation. We even let the 2yo skip her naps each day for 7 straight days at WDW :bitelip: She did great BTW.

I am following this thread with interest, because I, too, would like the info on how this is charged on the bill (for planning purposes). So far, looks like it has been done different ways for different families. Who would have guessed that WDW could have a lack of consistency about something? :rotfl2:

I think everyone has said that they were only charged for a Kona's child meal and not the Ohana child meal. I've never heard of anyone getting charged the full Ohana price when the child eats a Kona child meal. The only difference is perhaps you get a waiter that doesn't mention the alternative. If that is case you now know you can simply ask for the Kona meal without a problem.

It just angers me to see kids sitting around getting fat from all the horrible food and as parents they are condoning it.

Is this why you take them to the all you can eat meal at Ohana? :rotfl:

Just because it is an all you can eat doesn't mean that one needs to stuff themselves like a Thanksgiving turkey. Having a nice salad with a touch of dressing, lean meats, and fruit for dessert is hardly a bad or malnutrious meal. Besides some people go to ohana for the fun family atmosphere and games. I don't try to "eat" my money's worth. We pay for ambiance, good service, etc.

I am upset that our server at Ohana early this month didnt give us this option. My child barely ate anything. I would have jumped at ordering something from Kona for her in a heartbeat at least she would have eaten. Do you need to ask to order something from kona or are they suppose to be observant and notice the child isnt eating anything and then offer or tell us about this choice at the beginning of the meal?

The first time we went we just asked if they had a kiddie menu. We were told they do not have anything printed up but told us everything we could get. DD got the hot dog. Since then we just tell them we want the hot dog and fries for DD and they are fine with it. They even bring a ketchup bottle. Who says my kid doesn't eat veggies! LOL!

I am glad we did not know that you could order off the kids menu the first time we went because that was what DS would have wanted to do and we would have let him. Since we did not know that he got what we got and ate really well! He loved the bread and the shrimp and even tasted the green beans and pinapple. This happened at HDDR too as the first trip we did not know you can get something else for kids so he ate what we had and ate well. It helped that he was starving from being at the parks but he was really proud he tried some new things. I would try to encourage your child to try the new things first and then order the hot dog if that does not work. That said, we pretty much throw caution to the wind on vacation. One trip DS then about 8 ate chichen nuggets at least twice a day for a full week. He lived and really does do a little better these days.

Sorry your daughter suffers from acid reflux. My mother has battled it for years, but treating it with fried fatty "kid" food is a horrible antidote. The acid reflux really has nothing to do with the OP's original question either since you are reprimanding me for going off topic.

Glad to hear your daughter is intelligent and bright to start trying new and interesting foods. Most bad habits are learned very early in life.

The reason why I even mentioned her acid reflux, was because the food at Ohana's is much more irritating to her stomach than bland kiddie food (even if it was fried). I didn't understand why you would be judgemental about what parents let their children eat in a topic about prices. I don't care if people go off topic in any discussion (as I am right now :earboy2: ). It was more the tone and judgement you had toward families on vacation and what they let their kids eat. It's not hard to find healthy food at WDW, but I don't make point of it because I'm on vacation.

I do understand now reading your post again, that you were talking about kids whose entire diet consists of happy meals etc. I agree that it's a problem in our culture. But many times at WDW parents let their kids endulge just as we adults do. Anyway, my intention is not to change the topic (and tone) of this thread completely. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
