Which would you choose for a birthday dinner and why? I think they both cost the same for dinner, so which gives you the most bang for your buck?

Ohana because the food is so much better but honestly I would pick something more intimate and quiet like Jiko or Cali Grill or something

I went to Disney last year in Oct for my birthday and for my actual birthday dinner, i chose Ohana! It is my favorite of all the disney places i've eaten at. I love the atmosphere and all the delicious food! Wonderful!!!

Both are great - are you staying at AKL? Boma's food is so unique and the flatbreads and dips are so good.

I would definitely pick a more intimate place if it were just me and DH. But I plan on having DD2 and more family with me, so I'm looking for a more casual atmosphere.

I'm not sure where we're staying yet, but probably not a deluxe since my bday falls during the peak season!

Thanks for your input everyone! It is looking like 'Ohana is winning your votes. I'm still not sure though, I've wanted to eat at Boma for a long time. Maybe I'll have to do both this trip!

What do you mean bang for your buck? (rhetorical question)

Boma is a buffet so it will have the most options and unlimited supply, you don't get more bang than that. It also happens to be about the broadest buffet at WDW and high quality as well.

If it is your birthday and you've wanted to try Boma, go there.

I have not been to 'Ohana, but the one comment I've read a number of times is the sense of being rushed there. If it is still a consideration I'd suggest reading the boards to determine if this would be an issue for you. I would imagine that a group celebrating a bday wouldn't get rushed though.

I love both... but for a birthday I would probably choose 'Ohana simply because it is a sit-down meal and you will have someone waiting on you rather than serving yourself from the buffet. It just seems a little more birthday like to be waited on than to spend time away from your table and your tablemates. I would do both restaurants on your trip, but save the celebration for 'Ohana.

I guess I'm worried about feeling like I was ripped off by paying $30pp for chicken wings and steak skewers. If it's going to cost us hundreds of dollars for the meal, I want to feel like it was worth it.

Definitely Ohana!! After fighting crowds in a park all day I do NOT want to deal with them and lines while eating. Also, some people really pick apart the buffet line and make a mess of the dishes, I'd much rather my food come directly from the kitchen!

Generally we are not buffet fans though except for breakfast

Boma for me--such wide variety.

Unusual stuff that I've enjoyed in Africa and my DH got a chance to try. Some dishes I'd heard expats describe but had never eaten myself. Yumm

Plus, an excuse to go to AKL if you aren't staying there.

Mac and Cheese for one picky child. (Our DS tried and enjoyed most everything).

We liked the fact that we could start nibbling right away. (In Sept and May it isn't TOO crowded).

looks like thisa is not the popular opinion but we love Boma. I like the atmosphere more and the food options.

I think it just depends on what you are looking for... Ohana would be my choice, but YMMV.

Pros of Ohana:
Table service - I would rather have the food brought to me
If you can time it just right and get a good table (you might be able to pull it off if you tell them you are celebrating a birthday) fantastic MK view for the fireworks
Love the salad and AWESOME bread pudding!
We really enjoyed the food - my family has too many picky eaters for Boma.
Easy to get to, and then easy to get back to MK or Epcot via boat or monorail when you are done. The AKL is sooo far away from most everything, and requires bus usage unless you have your own car.
I just love the Poly!

That said, if you have adventurous eaters, and you can solve any transportation issues, and if Boma is what you really want to do, then go for it!! Its your birthday, do what you really want to do! Boma is a beautiful restaurant, and I think everyone should try it at least once. The food just wasn't for us. If you decide to go to Boma, I would recommend timing your ressie so that you will have time to wander around the AKL before or after your meal. Spend some time at the savannah overlooks and viewing areas, and definitely make time for the bonfire; we had a wonderful time at AKL. :)
