O'hana and the Luau are two different things. O'hana is the all you can eat restaurant in the GCH of the Poly. We love it, and are going to be there in a few weeks.
The luau is also at the Poly, but it is a dinner show. I haven't been there since they changed the show, but I'm sure you will get many answers here. We didn't feel like spending the extra money for the show on this trip.
I've done the Luau 3 times. Loved the first 2 times. Last time was the new show, it was good but the new story line was alittle lame. We're going to pass this time but can't say we won't do it again. As for O'hana, we did that one 2 years ago for the first time and that is one of the restaruants that DD7 has said that she definitely wants to do this trip. We loved it.
To be honest, I'm not all that crazy about the Luau. It was an awful lot of money for what we got, IMHO. We won't go back, although we are staying at the Poly again in October.
We did the new Luau show in 2003. My family enjoyed it very much. The storyline was a bit sophmoric, but the music, dancing and costumes made up for it. Be sure to remember you video camera (I forgot mine and was kicking myself at the time). I also like almost all the food selections they had (except dessert), and felt it was well worth doing.
Our favorite is Ohana and worth every penny. The luau is entirely different and I thought terrible and huge waste of time. The food was nasty and the entertainment lame.
We absolutely love Ohana's. The first time we went we were vacationing with our whole family and I had to insist on eating there. Now it's everyone's favorite restaurant. We tell everyone to make an ADR there when we hear they are going to Disney and everytime we get a phone call thanking us!!
Skip the luau and go to 'Ohana instead. If you can time it so that you can see the torch lighting ceremony in the GCH ( I think it's at 6?) and explore the shops and grounds a little before your meal you will love it!. Then after dessert, go out to the Polynesian beach and watch Wishes from there. This is what I'm planning on doing next time.
I have done the old Luau and had a fabulous time, but I've seen pictures of the new dessert and think it looks like spam and I hear the show isn't so great. Being as I've fallen head over heels in love with 'Ohana anyway, I"m not in a rush to spend more money on the Luau quite yet. I've been to 'Ohana three times and I can't wait to go back!!!!!
