Neither do we. We get hurricane days. And trust me, you don't want hurricane days, because that means the hurricane is coming close to you.
After Wilma, office was closed for almost 2 weeks.
Reasons?
1) Power didn't come on for a week and a half for most people
2) Most places had no water for over a week
3) Most of the roads were covered in trees
4) There was no gas, ANYWHERE. We found one gas station open in our area, and there were about 200 cars waiting in line. People were actually BBQing on the sides of the road, and would just push the BBQ cart forward when the cars would move a few feet.
5) No power = no phones to even find out about work. Also, cell phones did not work at all for over a week.
And that wasn't even a major hurricane (Wilma was only a Cat 1 or small 2). It's amazing how used to modern day stuff you get, until it's all gone. We were eating canned food for over a week, and the generators could only be on short amounts of time otherwise you would run out of gas (and only power a small fridge). You would have to go to the National Guard trucks to get water (and SOMETIMES ice), and in a 5 square mile area only one pay phone worked. And you would have to wait in line for about an hour and a half just to use it for a minute or two.
At night, you could see all the candles in the houses lit up, it was like it was everyone had been transported back in time.
Crazy times, I'm glad there haven't been any hurricanes in the last two years
