Im having a particularly cranky month when it comes to Gay Bashing, I knew the harry potter thread on the community board would eventually take this turn, I for one just about posted my life story to prove to this ignorant soul that not all homosexuals were drug addict derilicts with minimum wage jobs, yes you read that correctly.

Come on over and show this woman we are as normal as the day is long, may be educational for more than just her.

Some support from the cool straight folks would be awesome too!

Well, it finally got locked. That particular person has a tendancy to be that way, in the few threads I've seen her.

I wish it didnt, I think discusions like that are important, I honestly think alot feel this way out of pure ignorance and sterotypical perceptions. Have to hit the hate head on.

I agree. The best way to defend against ignorance is to try and educate those people.

Of course there are the ones who refuse to be educated, but that's a different story.

Fortunately the absolute vast majority of posters on the DIS aren't homophobic, or at the very least are trying to educate themselves. It's the small majority that make such sweeping generalizations. Thankfully, most people read their posts and just "sigh" at their ignorance, homophobia and hatred.

I agree , I try to pass on threads like this but when they are particularly nasty I cant seem to try to show them how rediculous they are. Maybe im just getting old and cranky :lmao:

The thread actually made me think about reading Harry Potter.......then I thought better of it. :rolleyes1 (although my girl would "allow"me to read it):cool2:

The part that I still don't understand is the whole "Lifestyle" issue.

Grr. I was about to post about my incredibly boring life (we're boring, married DINKs with a dog, we go to church, we vote, we sometimes eat pasta for dinner 5 nights a week because we're saving up for a house so that we can eventually have kids...), but discovered that the thread's locked. I'm glad it was just one bigot and a whole pack of people (gay/straight/whatever) trying to expand her horizons...

I just read through the entire thread and besides her postings making me ill, the one thing that stuck out to me was that she NEVER, in any of her postings, addressed the control that her husband wields over her and her kids. Talk about denial!!! Even when numerous posters addressed it, she ignored it. Just so damn sad that a woman in this day and age would allow anyone to do that to her. And even sadder that she apparently doesn't see it or is choosing to ignore it. :sad2:

I had to see the fuss over on the other thread. Had to stop because it literally hurt to read! :happytv:

I kind of understand the backlash you are feeling over here from her. I've had some myself over on the "childless by choice" thread... not fun.

As for Dumbledore, I haven't personally read the books, though I have to say I'm trying to get to them before all the movies are released. So all I know of Potter is from what I've learned in the movies (which what I've heard isn't always that close from time to time). LOL

I do have a close friend who writes for "fan fiction" on some of the Potter sites out there. I guess they've all known for some time and it didn't come to them as news when JKR came out and told the public. And honestly when I heard it didn't seem all that "news-ish" to me either. OH well, I guess I just accept the cool wizard guy for who he is! LMAO. Oh, and in the fan fictions that my friend is a part of you'd be amazed at some of the love "combos" we get going on from time to time. Hermione and Snape are a very common love duo (now if that wouldn't set that other chick off I don't know what would? LOL - poor young unsuspecting Hermione... poor dear!)

And as for that thread deteriorator on the other page... well, she goes on and on about how educated and great her life is... but what school did she go to if she can't even spell "school" properly (um... SCOOL). Forgot what page that was on, but it did give me a chuckle.

I'm off to Disney now guys! Talk to you soon!! :cool1:

Cheers!

Yeah, I read the locked thread too. Did she not re-read what she wrote BEFORE posting? Aside from the blatent gay bashing she did under the guise of Christianity (classic  ), not that that wasn't disgustingly offensive, I can't believe anyone would THROW AWAY books!!! Who does that? I'm suprised they didn't light a fire in a rusty trash barrel and have the kids throw them into the flames. Geez, give them to Goodwill, the local library, somewhere!!!

LoL, and I thought I was the only one!!! I don't know if you remember but I was on the same thread you are talking about. Luckily I got some comments in before it got locked. But it seems that this issue has come up alot in my life lately since Rowling outted Dumbledore.

I have a few points that I've found that I think are VERY intersting concering the Bible, society, and Homosexuality.

Did you all know that the same book (Leviticus) in the Bible that "condemns" homosexuality also condemns eatting eel (sushi anyone?) wearing clothing made of more than one type of fabric (take your pick in Vouge), ************ (do I need to say anything?), Eatting pig (do you want bacon with those pancakes?) and touching or playing with the skin of a pig (whos down for a game of football?) And its also a sin to gather sticks on the Sabbath (How many people rake, or putter around the yard on a Sunday afternoon?)....... And lets not forget divorces (50% of marriages end that way) and tolerating different religions (one of our country's greatest virtues, well in theory anyway) Lots more, too many for one post. My point is that all these things are just as bad in the Bible, so why is everyone so quick to scream "Its a sin! Its a sin!" when it comes to homosexuality, and condemn a whole group of people. If thats the case, Japanese people should be just as "bad" in the eyes of Chrisitans for spreading Sushi around the world (I do love sushi ! )

I know I'm preaching to the choir on this thread, but after reading this stuff, I still don't get how people are so stuck on Homosexuality. I wish that if people were going to condemn gays, they could at least be consistant with the rest of the Bible. But don't count on any Christian protest at the next Super Bowl, or outside of Sushi bars. (But then a friend reminded me that most of the people that claim they disapprove of gays because of Christianity can't even tell you where in the Bible it says so.)

I sincerely don't mean to offend anyone reading this, so if you are, I do apologize. But hopefully this info will come in handy next time we encounter another narrowminded, homophobic individual, that hides behind their religion.

Good to see over here under better circumstances :) I just know someday this will all be laughed at and people will not be able to comprehend why our fellow americans or any human beings treated other people and acted this way. :)

I can't remember where I first got it. But I really got a kick out of it the first time I read it.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Jim

Oh my....this is funny, sad and in some ways just outright silly. I wonder what Dr Laura's answer was (or if she even had the nerve/guts to address it!) Does anyone know? I have not read the bible, so I had no idea this was all listed out so specifically. wow.

I can't remember where I first got it. But I really got a kick out of it the first time I read it.

That is just wrong on so many levels. How will we all learn to get along and understand each other with people like you and her contributing hate. You are no different, or better, than she is. How can someone hate a group of people, that hates them, and think that their hate is more righteous? I have struggled with this for a while now, and continue to do so, from your post I can only deduce that you are in fact very young, if not in age, definitely in maturity....:sad2:

Personally, I think it is hysterical that Rowling outed Dumbledore, I do not read the books, but I do see the movies.. My family is like what, how did we miss that??? They are going back to the books and reread the parts about Dumbledore and the other character whose name escapes me right now. I think Rowling is one cool lady and she knows the score, by outing Dumbledore, she brings a whole new light to many, many people.....that is a good thing..

Now..this is not good, we heard on the news here that the church we use to belong to in Wakefield, MA....the pastor has taken these books off the shelves in the library of their school. That is not cool at all and I am like what is he thinking?? He says it is because of the witchcraft theme, but I wonder....read it here in the Boston Globe: http://www.boston.com/ae/books/articles/2007/10/25/man_from_ministry_bans_potter/

I had many run-ins with this pastor because I always questioned the CCD classes that he would make the parents come to, CCD is for the children, I had enough to do with everything else.. Eventually I had one just drop out of CCD...she could not stand it and I could not get around his onesidedness..

Here's my theory on the focus on the "sin" of homosexuality over all others: These people are like the religious man in Luke 18:9-14 who goes to temple and prays about how thankful he is that he is not like other sinful people and then goes on to brag about how he fasts and does everything right. Jesus contrasts his prayer with the prayer of a tax collector who says simply "Oh Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner". People who fixate on homosexuality, IMHO are the same as that religious man. They use the "sin" of homosexuality to say_"See, I'm not that big a sinner-those gay people are MUCH more sinful than me!!"

It's the only explanation I can come up with-other than the the idea that some simply protest too much...
