I have a seven yr old nephew that is just now starting to notice that everyone isn't the same color and that you inherit your color from your parents. He has a friend at church that is hispanic. He asked his mother (my sis) if James was adopted. My sister was shocked and said "No, why did you think that?" He said that James is brown but his dad is white so he thought James must be adopted. My sister explained that James' parents divorced and now he has a new dad. She wasn't sure if my dn would understand that since he doesn't know what divorce is yet but he just smiled and said "Oh I get it, so his dad is adopted!" That really made me LOL.

That reminds me of the time I went to pick up my DD (now 17) at day care when she was about 3 or 4 YO. She had a playmate whose mother was white and father was black.

This girl approached me when I went to pick DD up and asked "Why does Carly look different from you?" (she's Korean). I briefly explained her adoption and then proceeded to say, "Just like you look a little different because of your parents' ethnic background."

And she said -- "You mean because they're from New York"????

I thought I'd just about keel over from laughing...:D
