Oh no! Not the Selfie-Sticks...

I see selfie-sticks every time I go to the parks now. It's SO annoying but just part of a changing culture. Better get used to it!

My point is - live and let live. If I'm not directly interfering with you, then leave me be. Selfie sticks aren't rude. People who use them can be rude. But not all of them.

Unfortunately they have not yet figured out a way to ban rude people from the parks. So much in the way my daughter's class would lose recess when a couple kids acted up at lunch, Disney might have to consider banning all selfie sticks.

People have reported being whacked in the ankles with strollers, too. Should we ban those? It's the people using these things that can be rude, not the things themselves.

Also, I carried my stick on every ride I went on for ten days last August. Not sure where the assertion that there is no room on rides for them comes from. I made out just fine. Do you have firsthand experience to indicate otherwise?

I don't understand the purpose of the selfie stick on rides? Aren't you missing out on the experience? Also, if you're holding it up, aren't you blocking the view of the people behind you? or in the space of the people in front of you? I guess I have to see it to understand it, but I feel like if the person behind me was using a selfie stick above my head, I'd be tempted to stretch my arms up and accidentally knock it over.

Big dislike. Intentionally messing with other people is not cool. Much worse than someone accidentally blocking or bumping into you, even if they should have known better.
Using an add-on that can understandably and reasonably cause its user to block or bump somebody makes the resulting encounter intentional, not accidental. In cases such as this one, the issue isn't that the user should have known better - it's that the user does know better but continually engages in actions that can interfere with or injure the general public. That's MUCH worse than the general public accidentally causing themselves to appear in someone's pictures taken from a distance.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Wow, you've got me pegged. If I carry a selfie stick then I must be a narcissist! Oh, please.

How many pictures does one need of oneself, in any location or situation? How many images does one need of oneself that can't be taken at arm's length or by a kind stranger? More to the point - why?

Here's the ride photo of me on Splash Mountain using my selfie stick:

It's resting on the car in front of me, not over someone's head or blocking someone's view. I'm holding the stick in my hand while I'm on the ride. It doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the ride in any way. YMMV.

The poster I quoted stated they were intentionally trying to photo bomb people. Totally different than "accidentally causing themselves to appear in someone's pictures taken from a distance." I am a reasonable person - I get that there are thousands of people at Disney on any given day who have a good chance of winding up in my pictures.

As to your second point… now you're questioning why I should want a picture of myself, and how many I take? Can you tell me why you're concerned about either of those things? Disney is a pretty popular place to take pictures for people with selfie sticks and regular cameras alike...

If everyone uses it like this, then I don't have a problem with them. Thanks for the visual, at least now I can see how it CAN be done without interfering with those around you.

Unfortunately, IME and from reading the posts on this thread, not everyone is as considerate as you are.

I am a photographer and spend half my life behind a camera, I guess I just don't see the need to video every second of vacation. :confused3 I may not understand the point of video taping yourself on a ride, but it's not my vacation, so whatever. If it makes you happy and you're not interrupting anyone else's good time, carry on.

On the other hand, if I was in the seat behind you, I might be concerned about my face (or more importantly my kids') ending up on Youtube. In a public place like Disney though, you're bound to end up in SOMEONE's vacation pictures.

These "what if my kids show up in someone else's photos" discussions are way out of my range of logic.

Did you read the last sentence or just immediately jump to people worried about their kids ending up on the internet are illogical? Yesterday there was a news story about a man who stole pictures from an ex classmate's Facebook page and sold them to a child porn website. I don't think it's out of the range of logic to want to protect your kids as much as possible. Obviously there's a chance they will end up in random pics etc whenever they go out in public, doesn't mean parents don't have reason to be concerned.

Using those stupid sticks on a ride?? What happens if you drop it? Hit somebody. Not smart.

This is what I was thinking. I have had hats fly off a persons head in front of us, earrings...I really do not want to get walloped with a camera on a stick LOL.

It's tethered in two places, which is more than I can say for hats, sunglasses, scarves, purses, regular camera bags, backpacks, etc. If those are also banned then I would have no problem with a restriction here too.

IMHO, we need to spend less time taking pictures and more time in the moment. No need to document the entire day to "remember the trip." If you experience the trip, you'll remember it....

To each their own… you experience your vacation the way you see fit, as I will with mine.

As long as I don't get hit with a selfie stick, you're on!

Equating the necessity of hats and sunglasses in Orlando Florida to a selfie stick is a bit of a stretch. I think banning selfie sticks can be done without having to ban the other things you mentioned.

Photopass is made for this stuff and I just ask other kind people to please take our photos.

I just cringe when I see those stupid sticks - the pictures come or akward as well.
