Oh no! Not the Selfie-Sticks...

You do realise that even though pp photographers are paid to take them all day that hardly any are actually photographers!? Most just have an interest In photography.
I've had so many god awful pictures.
That if you actually practice enough taking selfies and with the aid of a stick you can get some great shots.

Yes, this is exactly the source of my amazement. The Photopass photographers are people who are interested in photography without being photographers (although I do wonder what makes someone a "photographer" if getting paid to take photographs all day long doesn't count). They have lots of practice taking photos of people they can see with expensive equipment designed for the task. Anyone who can do better than that with a phone on a stick deserves the title of "Photographer" even though selfie sticks inevitably will be banned in the parks.

Not all have had practice though, I've met a few that have just started and only just knew how to use that expensive equipment,
And it made for awful pictures.
I can't see them being banned if I'm honest, as they would also have to ban the tripods that they allow, since I've almost been knocked out flat by somebody who carried and pushed there way through to the front of the castle, if it had not been for the fact my husband managed to grab the leg of it from hitting me.
Also too many Chinese Japanese etc tourists now use these aids, I don't see how they will manage banning them.

I've never used a selfie stick and I love them. You don't find yourself wandering into pictures because you don't see the photographer. The are easy to walk around.

That said, I assume people who use them are responsible. Just as I expect people pushing strollers or wheelchairs and folks wandering with backpacks are responsible. It's not the backpack/selfie stick/stroller that slams into people, it's the folks wielding them. The vast majority of folks know what they are carrying/pushing and know not to hit other people.

I agree, it will be a real shame for these to be banned as the ones who use them properly will lose out.

We've noticed them around but haven't seen them be problematic in general.

The one exception to that is during parades and shows, when people use them, (or even just tall people with long arms), to hold their cameras, phones and ipods up way above their heads indefinitely taking videos. I really don't mind the occasional camera stuck up there blocking the view to snap a quick picture, but holding them up there continuously is so rude to everyone around and behind! But that's more a function of individual people than of the equipment itself.

We are heading to the World in 15 days. I spoke with a colleague who just returned from a six day trip and she said that "Selfie-Sticks" have taken over the "Watch me use Flash Photography on Dark Rides!" and "Look, my I-Pad is a Camera!" annoying habits in the parks. I thought that Disney had a policy against tripods and things of those nature? She said these "Selfie-Sticks" were responsible for ride-stoppage, parade-blocking, firework-guarding, and many other annoyances.
I wonder what Disney does about this one? :confused3
I have to laugh when I see someone use an IPAD as a a camera. I'm sure they have a phone but would rather carry the IPAD around, sorry it just looks stupid. I just read that in Washington DC the Museums are in the processing of banning them, especially in of all places the Holocaust Museum!

It's bad. Like super annoying super stupid bad. They are everywhere, and my Ds nearly got whacked in the head during some m&g with characters.
I think this is where you say to the person, let me help you fold that up and you bend it over your knee to fold. You smile and say "bless your heart" as you walk away.

To me, what makes the "selfie stick" different from a monopod is the ability to trigger the shutter from the lower part of the handle, meaning that it is intended to be used extended from the body. With a monopod, you still have to trip the shutter on the camera itself, requiring that it be held closer to the body.
Or use the RF or cabled remote... http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i:aps,k:canon t2i remote shutter release#

I use the Neewer... makes time-lapse super easy...

As for the selfie sticks, all I've got to say is... central Florida thunderstorm.

exactly.

I made it a point to always consider those around me while filming, taking pics, navigating a stroller through a crowd, or stopping to update FP+ options on my phone.... which is more than I can say for others. Should we ban smartphones, strollers?

Rude people do rude things. WDW won't ban rude people.

We saw lots of selfie sticks the last week of Jan at WDW. We nearly got bopped in the head twice but got a quick apologies.

There were some people who appeared to be video taping their every step in the park and on rides, that's where it seems more dangerous or affect the enjoyment to other guests. Those taking a quick photo here and there really did not inconvenience us.

+1 :thumbsup2 I chose not to post the our "selfie stick " video, due to DS adding 1 word of text that isn't allowed here, but I posted earlier that it's on youtube under Millers in Disney World Man, just so some can see how you can get cooler angles of things, and capture the moments .

That's just awesome! I find that great fun, it didn't appear to detract from your son's enjoyment of the moment and I'm sure you will enjoy viewing that years from now much more than just remembering one trip.

That video is pretty cool! It seems like your DS was pretty responsible on the usage. I don't see it whipping around in shoulder to shoulder crowds or anything. Also - the shirt/hat combo is fantastic!

Thank you..and no it didn't detract from his fun at all and we found ourselves MORE alert to sights than in the past because we knew we could now try to get that image. You can see that care was taken to not use the stick in crowds and was kept at eye level on rides (except for some shots on the Tea Cups). It was a crazy 4 days of parks and we love having the video to look back on as we were pretty tired and would have forgotten some moments if they had not been captures. I also love that I can see how much fun my kids were having on rides that we were seated behind them on. I wish we had this technology back when my mom was alive and made a trip with us. What I wouldn't give to have that to watch over and over.

those were our Nemo Seagull costumes for MNSSHP ~what a blast THAT was! I highly recommend attending if possible. It was our first time and the highlight of our trip. Our DD works/lives in Orlando as an Animator (no, not for Disney, lol) so she had an early day for work after the party, lol.

We loved them too! DS spotted them and thanks to the go-pro was able to get them on video. We drove over to Daytona on the weekend as we are Nascar fans and wanted to see the track, and jet-skiing was already in the plan so really enjoyed the outing. Kids wanted to drive on the beach too (DS was REALLY missing not having his jeep for that lol) We had a lot of rain on the trio but still had a blast.

That's a really cool video! People probably saw him walking around with a selfie stick and made judgments (I probably would have, too), but he ended up making a great memento for the entire family.

Reminds me of that Universal commercial where the dad is upset that the daughter's on the phone all the time, and she ends up texting her dad that this is the best vacation ever.

I try to be very careful not to hit people with our stroller, but if you stop dead infront of me, without paying attention to my stroller behind you, gazing around obliviously, then you might get hit. If you try to walk around taking a pic with your IPad, oblivious to your surroundings, not paying attention to where you walk, you might get hit. Last trip, 3 people fell over my son in the stroller bc they were not paying attention to what they were doing, walking aimlessly.

I have no problem with the selfie sticks until someone whacks me in the head with them, using on the rides though, should be banned

I love that commercial! And thanks..cool for us, even tho it show a lot of us walking thru the parks lol. We remember the conversations we were having when we watch it. It looks like DS is always walking ahead of us and not with us, but this is edited for better shots by him using the stick, and we traded off too but he is the more skilled. This is just the condensed video he made that friends asked to see. The total footage is a blast, and so glad we have it. That $8 stick was a great purchase.
