Is my pre-paid Disney vacation enough to get me out of jury duty? I have to go on the 15th and we leave on the 18th. What if I am picked to serve on the jury? Anyone ever had this happen before?

If you get picked, you have to go in front of the judge and tell him why you want to be excused. A planned trip like that should be ok. Lots of people have lots of excuses... depends on the judges mood I suppose.

This recently happened to me. I received a letter for jury duty and there was less than a week between the date of jury duty and vacation. Luckily, in NJ you call the night before to see if you have to show up for JD, and I didn't have to go. the rule in NJ is one day or one trial. I think if you state has similar rules, you could tell them about your trip and probably would be excused that day depending on if you get picked to be serve JD and how long the trial is expected to last.

Good luck.

Call Monday and ask. It depends on the jurisdiction. They may just be able to excuse (or delay) you without even showing up.

I think you can ask to be rescheduled. If I remember right, they'd like you to suggest what month you will be available.

not for the whole month, it just gives them a time frame.

I know that in Orleans Parish, you can request a postponement if you are going on vacation- just bring a copy of your booking. They may just make you serve in the following month.

Has anyone in our area not been called for jury duty recently? You are the seventh person I know of to be called up. I was called last month, but got out of it (postponed rather, three years) since I care for a small child. I guess there are so few of us left around here that they just have to call up everyone!

hubby did that a year ago.......they excused him no problems at all...and it was for superior court

Unfortunately, it's Jefferson Parish. I think I am just going to go and if I'm picked, not only do I have the vacation issue, I also manage a business with only one employee, who will be fine without me, but they don't need to know that - it will be a hardship! ;)

This happand to DH when we were going to Irleland. He called the courthouse, which told him to put it in writing and request to be taken off for that time. He got approved, and they called him again another time.

I just went last week. I was there a total of thirty minutes and was done. It was annoying to make the drive and all the arragements that go with it but now I hope I'm done for a few years. They said the defendant plea bargained once he knew a jury was waiting for him.

I'd go and if you do get picked tell them about your vacation and I'm sure they'll let you go. Take a copy of your itinerary.

Here in Mass if you go and get excused from Jury duty by the judge that counts , you won't have to do it again until next time you get called for JD.

My sister just called the courthouse when she got her jury summons ( a week before she was leaving on vacation) and asked to be excused.I think you are allowed to do that just once in our county.
Good Luck.
Debbie

You could simply just go and get it over with quite simply. My mom was called a few days before a vacation once and she simply went through the process and once she saw the accused she asked the court if they were really considering letting this guy loose on the streets again. :rotfl: She was dismissed instantly and wasn't called back for jury duty for years.

Is it for the 24th JDC? I am sure if you go and explain yourself before a judge he or she would understand.

Didn't you get a questionaire? My friend recieved a letter to serve Jury duty. She is pregnant and she said that there is no way she can sit for hours without drinking or taking a break.

She answered the questions and added a comment that she can't serve at this time due to her pregnancy. She mailed the questionaire back. She recieved a letter from the court stating that she is excused and that she will serve Jury duty at a later time and to wait for another letter telling her when is she serving.

You can put on the comment that you already have the trip planned and already paid for. They might excuse you. Unless they are willing to reimburse you for all the money you have put down on your trip, which that is not going to happen.

I showed up as required and one of the first questions the judge asked the assembled group was would anyone have a problem being present for a 2 day trial. Some were excused then, and of course through the rest of the questions.

I was called for jury duty after booking a WDW trip several years ago. I called the number on the jury summons and was granted a delay in service. Don't worry, but do contact them.

No, Louisiana, or at least Jefferson parish, LA doesn't do that. You can appeal it in writing, but I've heard that many times you don't even get a response.

I'm just going to go and if I am picked to serve, I will then explain my situation, armed with itinerary, flight reservations, etc.

I don't think they will want to reimburse me the thousands I've spent already!!
