Oh No! Chicken Pox! Need Pixie Dust!

I had the chicken pox twice as well. It isn't always a one time thing. :)

It is hard to say if you should cancel or not. I would find out your options in terms of insurance and re-scheduling the trip. I wouldn't want to bite the bullet and lose thousands of dollars because my child "may" get sick. However, if you can re-schedule and not lose much money, you may want to go the safe route and do that. You don't want a sick kiddo the entire cruise.

Blowing pixie dust your way that nobody in your family gets it. :wizard: Please go to the doctor and explain the situation and then follow his adivse!! He should know what is best and be able to advise you to incubation periods and when it would be ok to take her on the cruise. Hopefully she wont get it and you will be able to proceed as planned. :cloud9:
All 4 of mine got it within 24 hours of each other , but we didnt have shots for it back then and theirs took 2 full weeks to get over.

mom x4,grandma x4 :wave2:

Definately call DCL. They may be more than willing to reschedule you just to protect a possible breakout on the ship.

JNorris,

Sometimes I think I'm better off not knowing certain things, having to worry about the "what ifs" can make you crazy. With my kids, it seems that they get sick when I least expect it, than when I am expecting them to catch something. Good luck, I hope you get to go. ;)

wow, first hugs and pixie dust, it really sucks to be worried with this. I have no advise either way, there are positives but they tie into the negatives, good luck in your decision.

Please don't take any chances and expose anyone else. My DD got chicken pox from religion class-that was exactally 2 weeks after the teacher called to tell the parents that a child in class had been infectious, but wasn't any more...ya right! She was sick over Christmas break, on NYE DS and DH also came down with them. I've never seen DH so sick in the 19 years I've been with him. He ran a 103 temp for 5 days straight and I took him to the ER because I did some research online and found out that adults are more likely than children to die from them. DH was bedridden for 2 weeks and it took him another 2-3 weeks to get back to himself. Both of my twins had the vaccination and had 20-30 pox each. DH had at least 200 on his head and face alone and now has numerous scars all over his body. We found out later that DD was contagious 48 hours before she broke out. I sat on the couch each night and cried and prayed to God not to let my DH die. Cruises set sail every week. Would you want to be responsible for putting someone elses life on the line.

Chicken Pox is spreading hear in Georgia very rapidly, a friend of mine 5 year old got it and then exactly 18 days later her 3 year old got it. Her Dr told her that with this strain (they were both had the vaccine also). That typically the rash will break out around day 14-20 which falls in line with what you say happened to your daughters friends at 14 days and my friends daughter at 18 days. We are sailing April 2nd so i still have 26 days from the time that my 2 daughters were exposed for them to pop out, but this is very frustrating as a parent.
I would really like to know what you decide to do, and what kinda of measures needed in order to get refund with the travel insurance. Good luck.

This must be really difficult for you. It sounds like this is something that is best resolved by speaking with your Pediatrician. Your child's doctor should be able to advise you about incubation periods and help you assess the likelihood that she would actually contract the Chicken Pox after being vaccinated. It would be a shame for you to miss your vacation if it's really not necessary. While everyone here is well meaning the only person who can provide appropriate evaluation of this situation is a medical professional. Best of luck to you and your family!

If she would just break out right now and get it over with...problem gone! You are in my prayers.

I would not cancel. She may not get it. And also, we are exposed daily to things that we don't know about until we actually come down with it. Who knows when we catch a cold or a flu that we had actually been contagious? Like someone said, if we were that careful about exposing other people and catching things from other people, we would never go anywhere. I just think some of these people are overreacting.

It reminds me of that movie "Apollo" where that one astronaut didn't get to go on the trip because he was exposed to measles. He never did get sick.

JNoriss, I was just thinking about you today. How's your daughter doing? What did the pediatrician say about it? I hope you got good news.

I've been thinking of you too - hope all is well. Hopefully no posts doesn't mean you're busy taking care of those dots!!!!!!!

Actually, no chicken pox yet! In fact, 3 of the children that supposedly had CP in her class turned out to not have it at all.

Bad news is, I have a sore throat today! I think I'm coming down with a cold! But I'm not going to let that stop me!
