I was happily running a 12 mile route today when I stepped on a large acorn and rolled my ankle! I was able to finish 7 miles after, but it is a little sore and swollen tonight! I hope it heals quickly and doesnt get worse. Im going to take a few days off from running. Anyone recover from a similar injury? I dont think its too bad. I can still walk on it. It hurts if I twist it a certain way, but nothing too painful. CAREFUL of those squirrels, they are dangerous!

Hopefully you have been icing through the day and keeping it elevated through the day, also. If not too late get to Walgreen's or similar and purchase a compression appliance for the ankle. Two kinds are out there, one looking like an old timey basketball shoe top and the other neoprene. Either will work tonight. Or in a pinch an ace bandage will work. You want to sleep in compression and slightly immobilized. Put a pillow under cover at the foot of the bed so the ankle can rest in the neutral position.

I would take recommended doses of NSAIDs tonight and in the morning. Finally, do not think you need to run this week at all. Do not go out the door and try it to see if it is healing.

Hopefully the ankle does not swell up tonight and you have seen the worse of the injury. Generally you can get back in the game a week after a sprain.

I am more than likely over reacting but I have seen ankles swell over night after a simple roll, once the body relaxes and you are asleep.

Thanks so much for the advice!!!!! I have been icing and took Advil immediately after the run. I will plan on taking the rest of the week off to rest the ankle.

Looking at you avatar I was surprized you had ankles :cool1:

This is a great week to take it easy

I did the same thing a few weeks ago on a rock in the street. My ankle rolled, and my stomach dropped! Slowed down a little, but everything was OK. Here's hoping the same for you!:goodvibes

How is the ankle today?

I like to submerge my foot in an ice bath as opposed to just applying ice. It allows the entire area to get the effects of the ice as opposed to just the area in contact with the ice. I bought a plastic 4 gallon tub at WalMart that I can get both feet into and submerged to about an inch above the ankle. I started doing this on the advice of a friend who is an athletic trainer.

It seems to be getting better. I wrapped it last night and took more advil. kept it wrapped for part of the day then took it off. It seems to be a bit swollen tonight but I think I spent too much time on my feet today so Im now ready to rest it and apply some ice.
