For his second birthday (or maybe it was Christmas, I don't remember)DS got a LeapFrog My First LeapPad which he loves to death. Tonight, he brings it to me and tells me it's 'bokken'. Uh oh....

I fiddle with it and it isn't working quite right. It's like it's stuck..you press the "GO" button on the page and it starts to read the line of text, but stops halfway. If you press another keypoint (which would make a noise, etc) it starts to do it's thing but quits almost immediately.

I took out the cartridge and blew on it. I turned it off and then back on. I put new batteries in it.

It's STILL not working right. :(

So I put the LeapPad and all the books, etc for it away telling DS it's really broken. He asked me if Daddy could fix it and I told him I didn't know. He was kind of upset about it.

So tonight, after I put him to bed, I went online to see what the next step up from a My First LeapPad is. It's a Leapster 2. Great. Ok.

But it's 70 bucks. :( And the games are like 20$ a piece. Lovely. :(

I don't know if we're going to be able to get DS a Leapster 2 and I feel insanely guilty that DH bought me a Wii, Wii Fit and a couple of other games because that wasn't cheap I know.

I know that even if we only bought the Leapster 2 and two games (which would hold his interest for awhile, or hopefully at least until his birthday) it would be over $100. :faint:

AND we still have to buy him some more socks, shirts, etc because he outgrows his clothes SO fast!

UPDATE!
I spoke with the ILs and they have decided they are going to buy a Leapster2 for DS along with a couple of games. They always look for something they can get that's the same for both DS and DNephew1, because they are the exact same age and have fought over toys before when they didn't get the exact same things, like they were brothers instead of cousins.

I would think that lots of people have leap pads lying around unused. If you cannot find one from friends of family there are like 4000 items on ebay with lots of pads under $50.

Sound like the go button has worn out on the one you have.

If it had just been ONE book, I might have agreed with you. But it's each book that goes with it.

And this is the second LeapPad he's had..the first one quit working after about a year, but they weren't terribly expensive so we replaced it. The LeapPad is really for kids 18-36 mos, so DS really is too old for it now anyway and I want to step him up to the Leapster2, if we possibly can. I was thinking of asking my IL's to buy it for him for Christmas but I didn't know if that would seem..tacky.

They did have the Leap Pads plus Writing on clearance because they are discontinuing it. Books were $5-$7 and I don't remember how much the pads were. I know it is not the Leapster 2 and they are expensive. My children's Leapsters just broke too. I was considering replacing them but can not do that. My chidlren already have the Leap Pads plus writing so I picked up a few new cartridges and books for that on clearance.

You may also wish to check BJ's, etc... They sometimes have deals on Leapsters buy the game and the 2 cartridges cheaper than the website.

Good Luck. :)

I say drop some hints on the in-laws as it would be better for the kid to get something that helps him than more bunny pajamas with pink ears and a cotton tail, lol.

Leapfrog says to clean the contacts on the battery holder as they can get whatever. If that did not work then it was mishandled, end of story. I would call them and see what they suggest as It may be system problem and not old age and being mauled by kids as they imply.

About 4 or 5 years ago I won from Leapfrog a great prize which turned out to be $200 in merchandise but when I got off the phone it still was a lot more than free. I never trusted that company as they were basically giving away as prizes discounts on mechandise to get new customers. I did not buy anything as I have no kids in my life. People not familiar with the company thought that like Hasbro they would be taking home free stuff but ended up paying for stuff.

We still have my son's leap pad. It is not a my first one but the other. We also have a ton of books to go along with it. DS is now 10 and doesn't touch it any more I would be more than happy to box them up and send them to you. If you would like me to do this just pm me with your address

 That is the sweetest offer ever! You are very thoughtful and I hope karma blesses you!

always try craigslist. It's worth the look. I know that a lot of people are selling toys their kids don't use or never used.

It may not have anything for you, but you could find the cartridges cheap maybe.

Get a regular leapster....

My daughter has a leapster 2 (they came out in August) and my son has a regular leapster. Unless you seriously plan to go online and load crap on it (sounded cool, but I surely dont do it) then save the extra money and get a leapster. You should be able to find them easily now and the games are being discounted.

1stluvispooh--PM is on the way! :)

And I'm going to check Craigslist as well or Freecycle for my area..see what I can find. I don't trust Ebay, because every time somebody I know has bought something from there they have had their PayPal account hacked. :scared1:

Have you contacted the company? We had issues with one of their products a couple of years ago - I think it was the Leapad - the pen stopped working. They mailed us a whole new Leapad rather than fixing the old one. Worth a shot anyways?!

Actually, we've had a bit of luck! :) My DH (who works for a big box retailer) found a Leapster I (which I believe they are discontinuing???) at his workplace for $50 and we got an unexpected check in the mail. So we're going to be able to buy DS a new learning toycomputerthingamajigger! :yay: :cheer2:

The Goddess is good.:worship:
