After browsing at Goofy's Candy Co., we were hungry, so we headed over to
Wolfgang Puck Cafe at the West Side. We had an early ADR, the restaurant wasn't crowded, and we were seated immediately.
The server was very good--efficient and knowledgeable. She recommended the mango iced tea and promised that, if we didn't like it, she'd bring a different beverage (soda) at no extra cost. DS10 didn't care for the tea (it's not sweet at all), but DH and I both did. We'd been drinking too much sweet carbonated liquid all week, and it was refreshing to have something different. I don't have a picture of it, though.
We started with three different appetizers. This is the BBQ chicken quesadilla that DS10 ordered:
We'd had this dish about a year ago, and it was better then. This time, it had less chicken--and, frankly, less flavor. It was still okay, and possibly the best value on the appetizer menu, because it's enough to share.
DH was adventurous and ordered the crispy calamari:
DH said it was the best calamari he ever had. I'm not a fan, but I tried it and thought it was okay. Definitely tender, not at all rubbery. None of us cared for the dipping sauce, but the dish was fine without it.
I decided to try the artichoke and five-cheese dip:
It's very rich and cheesy. I didn't really notice any artichoke taste, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The flatbread was very crispy, almost too hard. We liked this appetizer, but probably wouldn't order it again.
DH chose the mahi mahi entree, but asked for garlic mashed potatoes instead of couscous salad. This was no problem, and he even got a bowl of the roasted vegetables that would have been mixed into the couscous. (The photo of the mahi mahi is washed out, but it's all I have. And there's the mango iced tea in the photo of the vegetables.)
DS ordered the macadamia nut crusted chicken. He liked it but would have enjoyed more of the micro greens salad. I thought the chicken was very good, tender and juicy, with a crisp flavorful crust. (Another washed-out photo. The chicken is actually sitting on a mound of garlic mashed potatoes, not floating in air as it appears.)
I decided on the veal weinerschnitzel, which comes with a warm potato salad (hard to see in the picture, but it's underneath the meat) and baby greens. We'd had this last year, and the dressing on the greens was a bit salty, but this time it was better. The potato salad is good, not great; I would have preferred it to be less mild in flavor. The veal is very, very good! It's thin, but still a HUGE quantity of meat. I could not finish this without help, but I tried!
We had the toughest time choosing desserts, because there were too many tempting choices. I'd read that they offered an espresso float, but the menu had changed since what I'd seen online; the espresso float was not available. DS had to have the carrot cake, but asked for raspberries instead of strawberries. (He LOOOOOVES raspberries!) This cake has cream cheese frosting and candied pecans, and DS pronounced it "awesome."
DH went with the key lime pie, which he'd had last year. He was not disappointed, as it was wonderful again. Another washed-out photo, though. We'll have to go back to WDW just to re-take these pictures.
I couldn't make up my mind, but finally chose something with a name like "chocolate mud pie." What convinced me was the fact that the ice cream is house-made. I'm not sure of everything that's in this pie (nuts, I think, and possibly brownie chunks?), but it was great. The ice cream was creamy and rich, yet "fluffy." The only thing I can compare it to is a frozen chocolate mousse. My only wish was that I wasn't so full before it arrived!
That was our last TS meal for this trip. I'll have one more quick review before I'm finished. I'm regretting my choice of title for this thread, because the first dinner was the only one that wasn't great. Overall, we had a wonderful trip and great food!
