For six days, DH and DS10 kept asking, "Are you going to take pictures of EVERYthing we eat?" Since I did, I figured I might as well write reviews of the food. :)

We tried some new dishes, revisited some favorites, and had both good and bad surprises. These are the TS restaurants we visited:

Maya Grill (CSR) dinner
Whispering Canyon Cafe (WL) dinner
Kona Cafe (Poly) dinner
Maya Grill (CSR) breakfast
Wolfgang Puck Cafe (DTD West Side)

There will be some CS mixed in, too, but I don't have a list at this moment. And not all of my photos turned out well--they seem to be either too light or too dark--but I'll post some anyway.

MAYA GRILL dinner:

Last December I reviewed the Maya Grill, and my family hasn't stopped talking about it. It was the best steak we had all week, better than Le Cellier or Concourse. This year ... not so much.

It started well, with the seafood skillet appetizer:

MayaSkillet.jpg

This has clams, mussels, and shrimp in a tomato-based broth. DH and DS both loved it, all the way to the last bit of broth.

I've never heard anyone talk about the crabmeat chalupa appetizer. After confirming that it has no avocado (I'm allergic), I ordered this:

MayaCrab.jpg

This is a stack that begins with a disc of soft cornmeal bread (it reminded me of a tamale) filled with black beans. Next is a large ball that I can only describe as a creamy crabcake. It's topped with a finely chopped fresh salsa. The sauce on the plate is a reddish-brown sweet-spicy sauce. I don't remember the pinkish stuff under the corn, and I didn't make any notes on it.

I liked this dish a lot. It wasn't the best crabcake, but the combination of ingredients really worked.

DH and DS were very hungry, so they ordered the mixed grill:

MayaMixedGrill.jpg

This is a filet mignon, ribs, and fresh catch (that day the fish was tilapia). It comes with a baked potato and vegetables (grilled green and yellow squash, red onion, red pepper, broccoli - salty but good).

I ordered the filet mignon:

MayaFilet.jpg

After our experience last year, we were looking forward to these steaks. When the dishes arrived, the steaks and ribs were at room temperature. The plates were warm, but the meat was not, and the steak and ribs seemed dry. DH told the server, who removed the plates and brought them back in a little while.

When the plates came back, the mixed grill plates were a mess: The beautiful piece of tilapia was broken into four or five pieces, and the whole plate just looked messy. And the steaks were slightly warmer, still dry, and now crusted with charcoal. The server said that the cook had reheated the food (which we'd already cut and tasted). The manager came over, was very apologetic, and said that the kitchen would prepare fresh dishes.

While we waited, we overheard the customers at the next table talking to the server and the manager about exactly the same problem. It wasn't just us.

Finally, the food came out and it was as it should have been in the first place. It was fine, and if it had been that way the first time, I'd be writing a much more favorable review!

For dessert, DS had the chocolate cake. My photo didn't turn out well, but the cake was good. DH ordered the spiced churros:

MayaChurros.jpg

These come with coconut ice cream, coconut sauce, and a banana garnish. It's a good dish--something different, nothing spectacular.

I ordered the fried cheesecake:

MayaCheesecake.jpg

The cheesecake was soft and creamy, and the wrapper (it reminded me of a flour tortilla, but I don't know if it was) was chewy. The chewiness was not appealing to me, but I liked the rest of the dish. I think the sauce was vanilla and the garnish was some kind of nuts. At this point we were just tired of sitting there, and I'm sure that made the desserts seem less appealing.

On the way out of Maya, we stopped to look at the grill where the steaks are cooked. The display of raw meat, the wood-fired grill ... everything is set up to suggest that the steaks are excellent. Off to the side, between the grill area and the main kitchen, there were trays of cooked steaks. Each had a little plastic skewer, like the ones you see in steaks at the Sizzler. :sad2: I guess that, when we ordered our steaks, they were taken from the tray, slapped on the grill for a moment to warm up, then served. No wonder they're dry and cold.

We were very disappointed in Maya, but it only got better from there! :cool1:

What a shame about the disappointing entrees at Maya Grill - the filet looked really nice as well :sad2:

Looking forward to reding more of your reviews.

Thanks for posting a review of Maya. It is not something seen around here very often!

Kringla (Epcot-Norway)

We couldn't pass up the pastries at Kringla. The always-good school bread
IMG_4598.jpg

and DS's favorite fruit tart
IMG_4597.jpg

didn't disappoint. The fruit tart has a shortbread kind of shell, and it's filled with pastry cream then topped with strawberries, raspberries, and kiwi. Last year it was a berry tart, with blueberries instead of kiwi, but we liked it both ways!

Yorkshire County Fish Shop (Epcot-United Kingdom)

"Hurry up and take the picture so we can eat!"
IMG_4556.jpg

This was good, as always. The fish was crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and HOT.

Tangierine Cafe (Epcot-Morocco)

We've always said that we'd try this place, but never got around to it until now. Since I was the only one in the family who liked it, we probably won't go back! This is the chicken and lamb shwarma platter:
IMG_4546.jpg

The chicken is in the front, and the lamb is hiding behind the bread. (The bread was an ordinary roll, not the pita I'd expected.) Working counterclockwise from the chicken, there's couscous salad (okay with me, but "tastes like sand" to the rest of my family), tabbouleh (none of us really liked that), and hummus (again, I'm the only one who liked it).

Everyone liked the yummy baklava:

Dinner was at Whispering Canyon Cafe, but I don't have any photos. It was fun: DS10 found the antics hilarious. The canyon skillet was good, not spectacular; DH and DS would have preferred the sausage to the shrimp that are now included, but there was certainly enough other food to choose from. The bottomless milkshakes (we tried chocolate and strawberry shakes) were great. For dessert, DH and DS both ordered the apple caramel pie (with vanilla ice cream), and I had the cinnamon tortilla (with vanilla ice cream, banana slices, and caramel sauce). They were all good, but we were just too full to appreciate them!

Now my mouth is watering - I am really craving those fish and chips :)

MGM has to be the worst place for CS. We had to eat something, so we stopped at Pizza Planet for this absolutely mediocre pizza and salad:
IMG_4648.jpg
IMG_4649.jpg

The best I can say is that it wasn't awful. :)

Dinner was at Kona Cafe, and this was the best surprise of the trip. DH and I had breakfast there on our honeymoon (11 years ago), and I don't know why we never went back until now. Everything here was very very good!

DH and I both started with the crabcake appetizer:
IMG_4747.jpg

This is not the "lumpiest" crabcake, but the flavors of the crabcake, the salsa, and the greens work together. Even DH, who doesn't generally like crabcakes, liked this.

DS ordered the sticky wings, with the mustard sauce on the side:
IMG_4746.jpg

He really liked these. He says the mustard was "quite spicy" as he used small portions of it. He would have been happy to have more of these wings as his entree.

Since he couldn't do that :) DS ordered the shrimp and scallops:
IMG_4753.jpg

He says that the shrimp was okay; he peeled off most of the breading and ate the shrimp plain. The scallops were wonderful (to DH and me), but DS wasn't a big fan. He definitely did not like the green stuff (celery?) on top of the rice! He liked this entree but didn't love it.

DH and I both ordered the filet, but I substituted broccoli for the asparagus that usually accompanies it:
IMG_4752.jpg
IMG_4754.jpg

Everything on these plates was great, from the steaks to the mashed potatoes to the mango garnish (sounds odd, but it was good).

The desserts here were amazing. I think we ordered one of everything chocolate! :goodvibes This is the Kilauea Torte:
IMG_4761.jpg

The shell is like a soft chocolate chip cookie, and it's filled with melted chocolate. What could be bad about that?!

The chocolate fondue comes with fruit and two kinds of house-made cookies. DH especially liked the coconut macaroons, and I liked the buttery, brown-sugary crispy cookies.
IMG_4762.jpg

This chocolate macadamia nut tart is the dessert that I'm still daydreaming about. I think it was my favorite dessert of the entire trip. The shell was like a chocolate shortbread cookie, and the filling is sort of like pecan pie (of course, with macadamia nuts instead of pecans, and a higher proportion of nuts to gooey stuff). And then they put vanilla ice cream on it!
IMG_4763.jpg

We had an excellent server here, too. The whole experience was so great, we stopped at the podium and made a reservation for the next day. (We had to be flexible with the time because of the short notice, but we were elated to be able to make a reservation at all.)

Thanks for the pictures. Most everything looks yummy! And those desserts at the Kona Cafe, wow! I wonder if I could go and just order a bunch of desserts, instead of dinner?:rotfl2:

Everything looks great!! I am drooling right now!

Thanks for the wonderful pictures. It makes the next 13 months of my life go by that much faster ;) :surfweb:

You have just convinced me to add the Kona on my Dec trip.

Thank You!

Kona is one of our favorite places. The meals are consistently good.

I love the shrimp and scallops too. The last time I was there, the server noticed my hesitation over the fried shrimp. She said it was also available cooked like the scallops. SO much better, IMO. I thought the fried shrimp took away from the yumminess:cloud9:

Hey, just to answer about the green stuff on the rice for shrimp and scallops... thats probably seaweed, a typical asian garnish... might be, but to me its tasty! haha.

You dont like toy story's pizza @ mgm? you know, i have the best italian style pizzeria down the block that i go to but every once in a while i love to indulge in pizza hut. To me, disney world pizza is like pizza hut. And i may be the minority but i actually like it haha.

LOVE your reviews so far. Thanks for the yummy picture of the torte @ kona cafe!!!

I could do that, too. Actually, at Kona I'd have the crabcake appetizer and the desserts. Not that the entrees weren't great, too, but that macadamia tart was just amazing.

Yes! Let us know how you like it!

I thought the server at Kona said that the green stuff was celery, but I'm not certain. It was okay, but my DS (who likes almost everything) didn't care for it.

Like you, we live in an area where we have Pizza Hut and also authentic New York-style pizza. We go to Pizza Hut sometimes, but it's not real pizza. :) Pizza Planet, on the other hand, reminded me more of something I'd get from my grocer's freezer. It wasn't inedible, but it's probably the second-worst CS we've had in the parks. (The worst was in MGM, also!)

We were back in the Magic Kingdom, and who can resist the Main Street Bakery? We shared this chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich:

IMG_4856.jpg

It's yummy and fun!

Around lunchtime we took a break from the park and took the monorail to the Poly for lunch. It was the first time we'd eaten at Capt. Cook's, but probably not the last. We shared the Aloha Pork Sandwich, which is kind of like a BBQ pork sandwich with cheddar cheese and vegetables in the sandwich. DH also opted for a side of steamed vegetables instead of the chips.

IMG_4858.jpg

We really enjoyed this sandwich! The flavors were hearty but somehow lighter than most BBQ. And although I probably would have chosen the chips, the steamed vegetables were tasty, too (and definitely healthier). We had the Dole whip for dessert here. Yummy.

After we shared the sandwich we decided to try the Hawaiian Flatbread.

IMG_4864.jpg

This was good, but we didn't like it as much as the sandwich. It also doesn't seem as good a value (whether using a DDP credit or paying OOP), but we wanted to try something different. For dessert we shared another Dole whip. Good thing there are no calories in shared food, or we'd be in trouble. :rotfl2:

We returned to MK and, some time later, stopped at Sleepy Hollow for funnel cake with powdered sugar:

IMG_4892.jpg

It was crispier than most funnel cakes I've had, and we didn't care for it as much that way. Of course this was the day that DS10 chose to wear a black shirt, so he was covered in powdered sugar by the time he finished eating! :)

Kona is up next.

We were fortunate to get a next-day ADR at Kona, and we decided to try some different dishes. We started with the same appetizers, though, because we all liked them so much!

These pictures are all either too dark or too light; sorry.

DH ordered the prime rib. This is medium-well, and I know it looks burned, but he said it was very good. It comes with mashed potatoes and broccoli.

IMG_4947.jpg

DS tried the beef teriyaki, which he enjoyed more than the shrimp and scallops of the previous day. It also comes with mashed potatoes and broccoli.

IMG_4948.jpg

I decided to try the pomegranate barbecued pork chop, which comes with roasted fingerling potatoes and bacon-braised swiss chard. (I'd never tasted swiss chard, and I've since read that it's super-healthy ... but probably not when braised in bacon fat. It was fun to try something new, but I can't say that swiss chard, even braised in bacon fat, has become a favorite of mine.) This is a huge pork chop, and it was very good. I couldn't pick out the pomegranate flavor, but the overall taste and texture were great. The roasted potatoes were tasty; by the time I'd shared with DH and DS, I didn't seem to have much left! I'm not sure what's on top of the stack there; it's fried and crisp, and I'd guess it's some kind of root vegetable.

IMG_4949.jpg

For dessert, I had to have the chocolate macadamia tart again. DS ordered the chocolate fondue that DH had had on the previous day. DH was the only one who ordered something new, the white chocolate cheesecake:
IMG_4951.jpg

This was good, not spectacular. (It's not chocolate, which begins to explain the lack of spectacular-ness.) I should say that DH's mom makes an awesome cheesecake, and we're hard-pressed to find another cheesecake as good as hers.

Overall, we were very impressed with the food at Kona, and we definitely plan to go back!

One morning we decided to try the Maya Grill breakfast buffet. I didn't take any photos. The food was fine, but nothing really unique. They have eggs, sausage, biscuits, potatoes, etc.--the usual breakfast fare. The pastries were the same types served at the Pepper Market, which are okay but not special. After all the heavy meals that we'd had so far, we really appreciated the fresh fruit and the pineapple juice! I'd also mention that, when DS dropped his juice glass, the server was there in an instant to help us clean it up.

This breakfast was okay, but not, IMO, worth the price ($17/adult).

Thanks for that bit of info. I love shrimp and love fried foods, but don't like fried shrimp.
