Offsite hotels...

We are making our first trip to disneyland soon and we're going to be staying at the disneyland hotel.
We've been talking the last couple of days and have just about talked ourselves into trying to add two days to the trip if we can do that and stay under budget.
We'll stay offsite for those two nights and I'm wondering what hotel is likely to give us the best deal? We'd need one in walking distance to the parks since we won't have a car.

I was basically going threw the same thing, only I ended up totally cancelling my DLH reservations and going with a Good Neighbor Hotel. We are going with the Candy Cane Inn. It says they are only 250 yards from the front entrance, which seems to be closer than some of the towers at the DLH. They also run a shuttle every hour and 1/2 hour during park hours that drops you right in front of the parks, if you don't want to walk.

2 of their Premium rooms saved us about $2000. Of course we won't get the conceirge lounge, but the bring a hot continental breakfast to the room every morning and they have most everything else. And they have a heated pool, hot tub, and children't wading pool. And while we aren't on a strict budget, that's more money for our other trips to DL later this year, and souveniers, etc.

Friends of ours stayed there while we were at the Carousel and were very dissappointed, its not a bad hotel, it just didn't live up to the hype some give it and its website has some blatant untruths. Using google earth to accurate measure the distance to the front entrance it is over half a mile, still very walkable but there are many hotels a lot closer. The rooms are very small, their "premium" rooms are what you expect in size from any other "standard room" at other hotels. If you go in winter be aware they only have 4 tables in their breakfast room, that means you have to eat at the outside tables or go back to your room if the weather is bad. The swimming pool is tiny but the gardens and ground are exceptional and it does have a free shuttle. On top of all this the hotels is more expensive than other options.
