I was of the impression that the Disney transportation ( bus, monorail, boat) was for Disney resort guests. It is in fact listed on the website as a perk of staying there. Are people offsite allowed to just get on, too? Now that I am thinking about it, we've never had to show anything when we get on….tx

Anyone can use it

Yes, transportation is for all park guests.

Whatever the wording is on the Web site, Disney allows EVERYONE (resort guests and non-resort guests) to use any of the transportation option. The only restriction is where non-resort guests can park to access the Disney transportation.

Use of all forms of Disney transportation is available to anyone holding a park pass.

Well, that is true, but it is also available to everyone else.

And honestly, the disney website is full of errors.

They advertise that to let people staying on site know that they don't need to rent a car to get around. It doesn't mean that it's only for onsite guests.

(Almost quoting from a Disney brochure of several years ago)

Once you arrive on Disney property, Disney transportation will take you anywhere on property you need to go.

(Today)

Note that going from Downtown Disney to parks always requires making a connection (at a resort). In a few instances, for example DtD via Contemporary Resort to Magic Kingdom, one leg can be done easily on foot (no pun intended).

There are a few times when bus drivers may check room or ticket credentials for crowd control, namely restricting arrivals at the park during early extra magic hours or certain capacity controlled closures to Disney's resort guests.

(ca. 15 years ago)

Corey Sandler, in his Econoguide series, stated "Disney also quietly sells a transportation only pass for XX dollars." Not sure whether this is still true but nowadays bus drivers and transportation agents don't check to see if you possess one.

So, if you are staying off site, could you park at DTD and go to the parks from there? Of course knowing that you would have to ride a bus to a resort first.

Just curious.....I've only stayed on site and this question just popped up in my head.

1. You aren't supposed to park in a non-park lot in order to avoid paying for parking at the park.

2. The parking lot at DTD is crowded enough as it is (by people who are actually GOING to DTD) due to the construction.

3. As you noted, you would have to go to a resort first. This eats up a LOT of time.

The courteous (and time-saving) thing to do is to park in the theme park lot. The parking lot at DTD is meant for people visiting DTD.

Don't forget buses to resorts start after the parks open. So you will easily eat up over an hour of morning time trying to get to a park

As a rule everywhere in the world, you are not supposed to park someplace while you go someplace else. Drive to each place.

Disney does have the exceptions that you may park all day in a theme park lot, or you may park in the lot for a resort you are staying at from arrival on check in day until you get back from the park that just closed for your checkout day..

Can you? Sure. Should you? Probably not.
Why?
It isn't quick. The buses at DTD don't start running, consistently, until well past 9am. So, you have to get to DTD, park the car, walk to the bus stops. Wait for the bus to come. Ride to the resort. Either wait for another bus to the park, or take a boat/monorail/walk. It will take at least 90 mins...from parking to park. You sure that's worth $15? Then reverse it to get back. Huge pain in the neck.

Like Goofy4tink said its not worth 3 hour of your day to get from DTD to a park and then back to DTD. Especially with the construction at DTD and how congested the parking lot is.

Yes, anyone can ride Disney transportation, not just those staying onsite. The website and other sources touting free transportation are merely Disney marketing gimmicks. They never say the transportation is available ONLY to onsite guests.

Use of all forms of Disney transportation is available to anyone holding a park pass.

Yes, that's the intent, but in practice it's not even that restrictive. A legitimate use without a park ticket might be parking at DTD, doing some shopping, then taking the boat to Port Orleans or the bus to Grand Floridian for dinner, then returning to see Cirque.

Heck, someone with a public transportation fetish could ride the busses, boats, and monorail all day long without purchasing theme park admission.

Yes, absolutely true. BUT....Disney has, on occasion, asked to see ID. Doesn't happen often but it can.

I think having MagicBands will now make it very obvious if you are staying at a Disney resort or not. Just saying...

Not exactly, all you have to do is stay at a resort one time and keep reusing the magic band on future visits even if staying offsite. The same for annual passholders who are getting passholder bands sent out this month.I have a band from a previous stay that I used on my offsite trip last week and I'm getting another set of bands for being a passholder, just waiting for them to ship. With that said if you're doing something at Disney, visiting parks, touring the resorts, eating at the resorts,etc.. you're a resort guest and are free to use whatever form of transportation is available.
