Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

I pre ordered mine tonight at best Buy! I also bought Mario Kart to give to my son when he gets out of school for the summer. I tried it out in BB and it's really cool.:)

Well both my kids love GH3! One of the first questions was how many guitars did I get? I said since we didn't know if both would like it only one and that we'd wait until another version comes out to get another. So is 2 the max number of players? I could look that up and prob will but just thinking out loud.:surfweb:

My son also did get Mario Cart as I mentioned and they like that one too.

For those that have WiiFit, do you need to use the board on a hard flat surface? Can it be used on carpet?

I have read conflicting reports that the guitar included in the not yet released Rock Band won't work with GH3, can anyone provide more details?

Wii fit's not out over here yet obviously so unless someone imported from japan that question is going to be hard to fully answer at this time.

The rock band guitar working with GH3....not sure about on the wii yet. on the ps3 no on the 360 they are enterchangeable...my buddy has been useing his GH wireless guitar to play Rock band on his 36O with no problems at all. and seeing as the wii's rockband guitar will also be wireless , my guess is that it will work. But we'll have to wait and see.

Hi tyedye! :wave2
Yes 2 is the max # of players for GH.

I'm pretty sure that the guitars from GH won't work for RB or vice versa. Since the wii mote plugs into the GH guitar, but it doesn't plug into the RB guitar. Here:
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/24/tabulator-guitar-hero-rock-band-guitar-compatibility/
THe Xbox version is the only one that has compatibility.

You know that the makers of Rock Band are former members of the team that created GH right? There's a lot of bad blood.

Thanks, I think I may get this. Is anyone else getting it?

LOTS of people are getting this. Every soccer mom I know who has a Wii (and I know a LOT as a children's librarian) is getting one, even when their kids don't want it.

There's a big article in this month Nintendo Power about it. We don't plan on getting it right away, if ever. I'm not really excited about it. I never used my DDR games. I'm not saying it won't be great--I just don't think it's for mii (get it? :teeth:)

If you do decide to get it--PREORDER it!!! I think they will be hard to find once the press really gets a hold of it. ALL of the libraries and senior centers with Wiis will want to pick it up.

A bunch of people from Europe have been posting on the community board that they have Wii Fit, so answers are out there. Try reading the user reviews on www.ign.com

Nearly every site I found said that the guitars wouldn't work. There's always a chance, but I think it's a slim one.

Well, hmm...
Here is what it says here http://wii.ign.com/articles/866/866425p1.html
Many current Rock Band players choose to play with their Guitar Hero III guitars. The general consensus seems to be the GHIII peripherals feel sturdier and are easier to play. For the Wii version, Harmonix insists it has continued its open-source philosophy to design, meaning it hasn't locked out any other controllers. It remains to be seen, but if there are any compatibility issues between Rock Band Wii and the GHIII guitar, Harmonix says the ball is in Activision's court. This doesn't bode well for compatibility.

My kids are playing GH3 non stop! And to think I've had this for 2 months or so sitting in the box in a closet waiting for my son's bday. Good thing that we have a soccer game and a bday party today or they'd prob play all day!

We def need to get another guitar so both kids can play but prob will wait to buy the GH Aerosmith version w/guitar that way we get another guitar and different music. Amazing that they now like songs that came out when I was a kid.:rolleyes1

We'll know for sure once the game comes out. The site I linked said that it wouldn't work and also pointed out that Harmonix has said that they're all for open sharing, but Activision is not. That's why the PS3 guitars are not compatible.

For $5 at Toys R Us you can pre order and your guaranteed to get one. We pre ordered Wii Fit and Lego Indian Jones.

My boys have had Mario Kart for 3-4 days and they like it alot but they also have had GH3 for the same length of time and that is getting alot more play for them. But it is also new to them, they've had Mario Kart on the GameCube so it wasn't a totally new kind of game if you know what I mean.

I think your son will like it alot. IGN gave it an 8.5 which is great. Here is the link to the review.http://wii.ign.com/articles/868/868012p1.html

I LOVE MK. DH and I have had it since Sunday, and Ive been playing it everyday, all day - litereally. I would get on about 10am and wouldnt get off until 6pm. I've gotten gold in all the cups except for 150CC. I just started doing the 150CC today and in my 1st cup I got bronze. 150CC is VERY HARD. I've mainly been playing online and have gotten VERY good. I've also have unlocked some characters and cars. And my wheel online has turned from white to gold. Word of warning - to complete this game, you HAVE to play online. Its the only way you are gonna unlock everything. Some of the cars and characters can only be unlocked from playing online. Also playing with the Wii wheel is a lot of fun and a must in my opinion. Playing with the wii wheel feels very natural and the motion controlls are right on point. There is no lag time playing online as well. Picking up other players to play against is very fast. And you can play up to 2 people on per Wii online. DH and I play against 10 other people sometimes. Most of the time its just me on, cuz DH sleeps during the day since he works all night. Anyway, sometimes there can be an overload from everyone trying to signon at the same time and you could have a small problem connecting. If you do, just keep trying connecting and you can usually get connected after the 2nd or 3rd try. Once you start playing online, not sure if this might happen to you, but to me its like a drug. Its VERY addicting. You dont wanna get off, and the only thing you want to do is play MK online.

What is the word on Mario Kart? Is it good? I might pick it up for DS's Birthday.

DS just bought this game today and he LOVES it! He's tried and tried to play online but it just isn't working! He'll get to the point where it's showing you your oponents and then just as you think you're about to race, it says you've been disconnected. It's really frustrating him! What's the trick? Do you pick "regional" or "worldwide"....any other tips?

Most of the time I do regional, sometimes worldwide. Yes sometimes I do get disconnected as well while Im getting oponents and theres been a couple times I even got disconnected during the middle of a race! It just happens. Theres no way to fix the problem, but just try to reconnect. If he tries to reconnect and doesnt work, go to your wii settings and do a test connection to make sure your will is still connected to the internet. If it is, try connecting on the game again. If it still doesnt work, then theres a system overload and to many people are trying to connect at once. Wait for 30 mins - 1 hr and try again. He should be able to get on then. If you are still having problems and just simply can NEVER connect, you will have to call Nintendo to see whats up. But generally you just have to be patient and wait and you should connect. Most of the time I can connect the 1st try. But there has been times I had to wait for about 20 mins and tried to connect again and worked just fine.

Called nintendo...they are so nice!! They had me change our router from channel 6 to channel 11. Problem solved! He said 6 gets a lot more interference and we'd be good on channel 11. DS is now addicted too!

By the way, what does the gold wheel mean? And after you do a race when it gives you the + or - points...what are those points for? Any other random info or tips on the online play?

When hes online next to his name he should see a white wheel if hes using the wii wheel. After he has played online with the wii wheel enough (I think I had to play between 50 and 100 races online) it will change color, and his icon for the wii wheel will be gold instead of white. Also, when he gets star ratings on the offline races (the actual game itself), that wheel will turn into a star. If you look in the book, it will show ratings from 3 stars to I believe a E. If he were to get 1 star rating for each cup, his wii wheel icon (online) will turn into a star. If he gets 2 star rating for each cup, then it will be 2 stars, if he gets 3 start rating for each cup, then it will be 3 stars.

The points for online is just show how good you are. Not sure if you get anything if you reach a certain amount of points. He will start off at 5000 points. And then depending on if he comes in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. he will either gain or loose points. Example - Say hes playing against 6 people - the 1st 3 people to cross the finish line will get + points and the last 3 will get - points. If hes playing against 12 people - same thing. The first 6 will get + points and the last 6 will get - points. The VR stands for versus rating.

The only tips I can really give is make sure whenever he jumps ramps right as he gets on the ramp, have him shake the wii wheel. After the jump, he will get a speed boost. Also, if he spends enough time behind the same character for like 10 seconds, he will also get a speed boost. Theres another tip but trying to keep it hush hush. Not to many people know about this other tip. Just make sure he doesnt tell everyone under the sun. Because this 1 tip I have learned have actually saved me from being in the 12th place and ended up in 1st place. Whenever someone (other then himself) does the POW item, have him shake the wii wheel when it gets to the 3rd POW. He will do less of a spin out and will keep moving. If he doesnt time it right or doesnt do it at all, he will go into a full spin out and will slow down a lot. Also another tip is the speed boost at the start of the race. To do it, hold the 2 button down not when it gets to the 2nd light but before the 3rd light turns green. So inbetween the 2nd and 3rd light turning green. If he times it right, he will get a speed boost at the start of the race.

Also if he hasnt done so already, download the mario kart channel. That channel will allow you to access your scores without having to pop the game in. From there, he can also register friends and play against friends as well. If he would like to add me, he can. All he has to go is click on mario kart channel. Click on his license and click on friends. Once hes connected to the internet click on register friend and then type in this number 2062 - 9546 - 7792. He can get his number by clicking on mario kart channel and then click on his license. Under his Mii in the friends box he will see a set of numbers. That is his friend code. If he wants to play against me, tell him to add my number and then you or him will have to get on here and post a message, or send me a PM and give me his friend code so I can add him. We both have to add each other in order to play against each other. Im hardly NOT on. So if he ever wants to play just let me know and we will set up a time to play against each other.
