Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

Sorry if this question has already been posted (I'm getting a little cross-eyed after reading too many posts!), but does it have some kind of a dance program?

DH just bought a Wii today for DS's birthday. DS wants Dance Dance Revolution something fierce, but it isn't aviailable for Wii. Is there something compatible/similar for the system?

The only thing out right now is Dance Dance Mario for the Gamecube (playable on the Wii), which I believe is still hard to find.

There is a real DDR game coming out sometime soon. Let me see if I can find a date for you.

Depending on how old the kid is, I'd probably wait for the new one. And since you probably won't find the old one, it's probably moot.

Here's the latest info from www.IGN.com There's no official release date yet, but it'll probably be out near the end of the year.

So you may want to look for DDR Mario. I have it and it's great, but any serious DDRer thinks it's too easy. I think it's a great intro. I would check your local used game stores.

The only other option is to pick up one of the plug and play dance games out there. I've seen a Strawberry Shortcake one and some others. This is definitely a last resort, I tried to distract him with other games first!

IGN is the best place to check for more info about Wii games if you're in a hurry or something. But we're more than happy to help you out here!

The answer will be yes.

As of right now there are no specific DDR games for the Wii. You can however get and play DDR mario for the gamecube on the Wii. This would hopefully hold him over until teh offical DDR game comes out this fall.

The nice thing about the Wii ddr that is comming out is that it is rumored to not only use the dance pad, but also the wiimote for added play control. Possibly even a microphone attachment.

Add to that the in developement High School Musical game along with the EA game Boggie and you'll have a whole lot of dance games very soon. He'll just have to be a little patient.

All of those games are rumored to be done by years end.

Wow! Thanks, everyone for all of the information! :thumbsup2 I'll check out DDR Mario. There are enough used game stores in our area that we just may find one. Plus, DH is big into strategy board games, so I'm sure one of his buddies will help out, too. If it is easier to use than DDR, DD will be happy. She finds DDR too difficult for her (she's 6). They have DDR at their school, so they use it there during PE or indoor recess.

It's great that DDR will be coming out at the end of the year, so we can think Christmas for that. DS(9) will be thrilled to get the Wii, so he'll have the games that come with it to play until December rolls around.

My kids haven't seen High School Musical yet, but my guess that after our October WDW trip and a visit to MGM Studios they'll want to see it. So, that will also be good timing for a Christmas gift.

Thanks again! :thanks:

That looks fun! :)

We will have our new calbe internet installed this afternoon and want to get on and download a few older games that we can play together, such as F-Zero... What exactly will we need in order to do that? Is my list complete?

- Classic controllers
- DSL or wireless Internet connector for the Wii
- Wii Points card to make the online purchase

Anything else?

Looks pretty complete just a few notes.

1) Some games will allow you to use the wiimote like an nes controler. Others will let you use a gamecube controler for play....the classic works with every game on the VC so if you can get one go for it. But if money matters you may be able to play the games you want with other controlers.
2) The wii has built in wireless, so as long as you have a router that broadcasts a wi-fi signal you'll be all set. Do note that you may have to tweek settings or imput your router password the first time you attempt to connect the wii. nintendo.wifi.com has info if you need help or get an error message(you can put in the error code and it will trouble shoot it for you)
3) The Wii points card is up to you. You can use a credit card and buy the points directly over the network, though there is no advantage to this(no discount, ect.) other then not having to go to the store.

good luck and enjoy!

Wii's just keep on selling!

Nintendo Wii No Longer an Endangered Species

Although I’m hesitant to call the Wii drought over, it seems as though the spring time rapids are beginning to flow. After months upon months where would-be Nintendo fans had been denied a chance to own the motion-sensitive machine, retailers are beginning to receive the device in greater quantities. While it takes some investigative work to find one, the Wii may be moving from the “endangered” to merely the “threatened” species list.

First reports of the let-up have made their way to online consumer forums, most notably the Canadian RedFlagDeals.com. According to one poster, Best Buy received some 120 Wii consoles earlier this week, selling out in just 19 minutes. Future Shop, a Canadian outlet cut from the same cloth as Best Buy, sold 220 units in 40 minutes.

The poster on this particular board doesn’t mention the store location, although judging from the numbers both the Best Buy and Future Shop are likely metropolitan outlets. When I contacted a friendly source that works at a Best Buy in Windsor, ON, just over the border from Detroit, he indicated that his store had received 70 Wiis for a few Fridays consistently, with last week’s shipment even lasting until the following Saturday morning.

Rounding out the retail report, a local Wal-Mart described much lower numbers, 12, with their shipments arriving earlier in the week (yesterday, in fact). As expected, these were gone by this morning. A call to EB Games was less informal, with the clerk refusing to detail how many Wii units the store had been receiving, or when the next might come. However, the rep did reveal the last shipment date, which was, like Wal-Mart, earlier in the week.

For those still hunting the elusive white Wii, it seems as if Best Buy stores consistently receive the largest shipments, arriving on Fridays. Smaller stores (and departments) boast the opposite, with their Nintendo consoles coming in on Mondays and Tuesdays. Sounds like everyone should avoid those hustle-bustle weekend trips.

Is the shortage over? Certainly not. But, the rising numbers makes the once impossible task a challenge, even a retail test of strength.

Good luck, Mario-heads.

 I imagine I'll be popping around here occasionally...I won a Wii a couple of weeks ago and I'm quite untechnical with such things. The fact that the last system I was really "into" was the 8-bit Nintendo says a lot about my skills!

My oldest son just turned 12 and had a sleepover party this weekend. The Wii was our party game:cool1: Most of the boys hadn't played it yet, so it was a big hit. One think I noticed....it gets crowded. We have 3 controllers and I'm not going to run out and get the 4th. I don't think there is enough room for 4 people to stand and play tennis! These boys are the size of adults already, so that is probably the issue, but with arms and elbows flying, there wasn't enough room for any more! Also, the watch-ability isn't that great. If 4 are up playing wii sports, the others can't see the screen! They were all happy to watch Sonic, they could see.

My 7year old smoked all the big boys at Bowling!!! How cool is that!!!

I am very pleased with it so far.

I know it may take some of the "fun" away, but tennis is extremely easy to play in a sitting position by just flicking a wrist.

Also You do NOT need to be directly in front of the tv. I have played games way off to the side and still gotten good results. as long as it can read the position of the sensor bar you will be fine.

Sounds like fun anyway!

A lot of work, but you could always rearange the whole room to give you selfmore space (move the tv to the wider wall?) if it's not already set to maximum effiecency.

My daughter wanted one for her confirmation gift and I waited on line for two hours. She dosen't even play with it. I probably used it three times.

If anyone is interested in buying mine, you can PM me.

Sorry to here that...how old is she? Is there maybe a reason she doesn't like to play it??? Doesn't like the sports games?

Just Announced:
The Wii isn't known just yet for its vast array of 3D fighters. And that's not going to change even with the announcement of Soul Calibur Legends for the system.

First appearing in this week's issue of Famitsu, Legends is described as an action adventure game rather than a fighter. Set in the 16th century, players will be able to meet characters from the Soul Calibur world and experience sword-based combat that makes use of the Wiimote.

Famitsu was able to unveil nothing more than a logo for the game and did not even provide a release date. We presume this means a release is a ways off.

I picked this up for 19.99 at Target over the weekend. Costco, next door, had the same game for 44.99. I haven't opened it yet. Does anyone have any reviews on it?? Will the kids like it??

Tx!!

Almost every movie to video game game will get completely slammed by "real gamers" so it's hard to get an accurate picture.

IGN gave it a 6. Read it here: http://wii.ign.com/articles/759/759781p1.html

Normally kids will like some of the games, but they typically won't play them as much as other games.

I would almost never suggest buying a full price movie video game, but at $19.99 I think you can let the kids try it out and then if they don't like it, you can always trade it in.

HTH!
