Just joining this thread now that I've signed up for Goofy!
My neice and I will be doing it together.
We need lots of advice and stories!
Also, what plans do you use.
I've used Hal Higdon's since I started doing halves. I have many under my belt now!:cool1:

Can't wait to see you all there!

P.S. Is "Dopey" adding the 5K family race?

Welcome and Do It! The medal is a great one this year for the 5k. In the alternative, we run 3-5 miles at OKW on Friday morning (usually BWV). It's a great time.

As far as plans, the Higdon plan is more than adequate for the Goofy.

Is anyone else on this thread who is going Goofy not doing any other races between now and then? Just wondering if I'm the only one who is going from here straight to Goofy. :) And I'd be curious to know what your training plan is. I'm sort of following Galloway's plan. My long run is up to 7 miles.

I am in the middle. I have a slot in the RNR SA and have a streak in a couple local halves. But I usually let my training dictate b level races.

Kinda sorta. I have DL half soon, but after that, just a couple of tune up races before Goofy. In other words, after Disneyland Half, the WDW Half is the next big race for me (followed by a celebration marathon victory lap).

After Disneyland, I have a long term schedule for Donald, tweaked a bit to cover Goofy. The intermediate races will be like practice races and long tempo runs in that schedule.

You can do it if you do a Hal Higdon plan, or maybe a Jeff Galloway run/walk plan! I would be VERY careful and back off if you get injured.

I'm doing ToT and the Marathon with a modified Galloway schedule. My long runs will be:
9 miles Aug 19th
10.5 miles Sept 2nd
12 miles Sept 16th
Tower of Terror 10 miler Sept 29th
12 miles Oct 14,
14 miles Oct 28,
17 miles Nov 11,
20 miles (or possibly a half marathon) on Dec 2nd,
and 20 or 23 miles (depending on if I decide to do the half) on Dec 23rd.

Runs in between vary from 5 to 7 miles.

I just took the 30 week plan and moved the dates to where a 10 mile run would be on ToT (making it a 29 week plan). I think I'll be fine as long as I get to 20 or 23 miles.

Seeing this laid out makes me feel better, actually. Once I get to ToT, it's only 5 long runs to the marathon! I can get up early to run 5 times. Looking at it that way seems a lot less intimidating!

Does that seem like a reasonable schedule for a first timer? I could go ahead and start off at 14 on Oct 14th to do a full 26, but I don't want to hurt myself. Of course, this is with speed work on day a week, hills one day, Pilates twice a week, and either swimming or biking once a week. Plus an off day, of course. ;)

I would do 14 on 10/14, followed by 16, 18, and 2 20's.

I am definitely doing a local 5k in late October...that's it for me unless something fun comes up. :)

Which Higdon? I am using Novice 1...making a few of the Thursday/Saturday runs back-to-back. I am also adding in 2 weeks so I can do an 11- and 22-miler back-to-back 3 weeks out in addition to the 10- and 20-miler week he already has in the schedule. What do you think?

Thanks! :goodvibes:

If you can get away with Novice 2 or Intermediate 1, I would do that. Everyone who I know who did Novice 1 had a very, very bad experience.

That's what I am worried about. I originally planned on using Intermediate 1 (changing the second 10/20 week to 11/22) but I got scared off after my last couple of weeks of running...just felt felt really sluggish. But I question how much of it was my not slowing down as much as I should have in the heat/humidity...ya know?

I used Novice 1 for the marathon last year and liked it but I know Goofy is a whole different situation...I would really hate to not be in good enough shape to completely enjoy myself.

You could also attempt to make up your own plan BASED on Higdon and post it here for people to look at.

Thanks! That seems just as doable. I am starting to get less scared as I really look at the training. 20 miles will still take me 5 hours at training pace, but if I can get up by 6, I'll be done by lunch!

I think this works well. The exception woulf be to push the down eek miles up during hte period starting with a once every 3 week long run. Do one of the pull back runs in the 8-12 range and keep the other as planned.

*******
I stay OKW about every 4 years. *****

Shock and surprise. We have a crew of 9 with 2 others wanting to stay in an OKW 2 br villa. I have never personally had a waitlist room open until about a minute after this post above. We are now in a3 BR grand villa. It's going to be fun as two first time marathon runners are on the guest list... For those who know the OKW GV layout, the GV is a two story villa; master down, 2 rooms up. Worse for the first time runners.... All but maybe 2 of the GV are on the second floor so the second rooms are actually on the third floor. So its two stories down to the ground on Monday. Ouch

And have you all critique my work?! :scared1: :rotfl: J/K...I'm definitely doing something Higdon-like, just not completely sure how exactly I want it laid out. I don't want to burn out during training, but I want to be prepared for the weekend at the same time. :confused3

Party at Coach's place! Sounds like a fun weekend. You guys will be easy to pick out since everyone will be going down those stairs backwards. :thumbsup2 :rotfl:

I did it. I finally broke down and signed up for the Donald. My husband is running the Goofy and wanted me to try the 1/2 marathon. Any suggestions for someone that has only walked a 5K?

By far the easiest plan is the Galloway plan. It builds miles slowly and is fairly straight forward.

Otherwise... Get to a running store to get fitted for a pair of shoes. Then head out the door. If planning on walking work on turnover and form. It is not all that hard to walk a sub 15 minute mile during the race if you set your mind to it. If thinking of running, read some of Jeff's articles on his website and start off with the run/walk as your starting point.

Most of all, have fun

Anyone else staying at POFQ? I finally committed and made my reservation (and paid my deposit). I'm just hoping they come out with a room only discount. I wanted the Boardwalk but I'm going alone and I just couldn't justify spending the extra money since I really like POFQ when I stayed there last October.

I am a bit late to the "walk from OKW" thread, but here's my experience with doing this.

I'll open by saying I rarely saw a rule that didn't need to be stretched if not shattered (my elementary school teachers, who'd be in their 80's by now would agree), and I'm wound pretty tight on race morning so anything that makes my transit into the corrals easier is pure gold.

I've spent the night before the races at both OKW and POFQ several times, and when I do this I always walk to the corrals. If you take the bus you need to be up and out earlier, much earlier. The bus takes a while to get you to the staging area, where you stand around for a long time, and then you walk or mosey slowly to the starting corrals.

The walk, in contrast allows me to sleep later and leave the room much later. I first walk to the check-in area at the resort, where I do all my stretching indoors and I hit the bathroom a few times as the nerves get to me. It doesn't take long at all to walk to the start, as Charles commented, maybe 10 minutes from POFQ and a bit longer from OKW, as the corrals are just on the other side of Bonnet Creek and there is a small bridge over the creek which puts you just to the east of the corrals.

Every time I've done this there has been a small band of fellow runners doing the same thing, and we slip out and walk over together. Yes it is super dark during the walk, but there is little, little traffic, so just be aware, and you cannot miss the starting area. It's where all the music is coming from, and where the arc lights are based.

Charles did note that by doing this you cannot use bag check, but I'm a true minimalist on race day, carrying nothing and checking nothing. If it's cold I do wear throw away sweats which I toss just before start time.

Anyway, it can be done, and done easily. You do miss the staging area activity, but I'm wound up so tight before a race that I just want to get to the starting line and begin running.

Good luck everyone as the weekend gets closer.

Craig

I booked at POFQ for this past year--full price--and waited for the discount to come. Unfortunately, it didn't open up for there over marathon weekend. Don't recall if it was the dates or room type, but I do know that since FQ is smaller than POR, they don't tend to have the discount rooms as often. I ended up switching to POR, where I have stayed before, and saving a lot of money. I really like POR--have stayed there 3 or 4 times now-- it is definitely a big resort, but doesn't feel that way and I don't mind walking. Hope you get your room at discount!

Hi Craig! Long time, no see. (other than your occasional FB comments) Hope you and family are doing well.

Looks like quite the crew at OKW this year.

harleys mom I think I used the Higdon Novice 1 plan for my first.

And finally, I see we'll have some company for the Mickey on Sunday--Drew Carey and Sean Astin have been announced as running it.
