I've used CW-X compression tights since last October and have never noticed this, but lately when I run, I get a black & blue on the inside or on the top middle of my left calf. I make sure I position the tights the same way on each leg so I'm not sure what could be causing this. I told my doctor about running during my c/u this year and she checked both legs and didn't see anything abnormal. Could this just be some sort of chafing?

With 15 minutes to spare on the $20 off flash sale, I took the leap and registered for the marathon! *gulp* I've run two half marathons in the past (the first one being this year's Princess) but this will be my first full. My husband has been encouraging me to give it a try (he's never done a half or a full, just my biggest cheerleader) and bought me Galloway's book for my birthday. I kept going back and forth on it and when the sale appeared last night, I decided to sleep on it. So here I am! Eek!!

I have some questions. When I registered for the Princess, the registration email had a link to buy discounted tickets. I don't see a link or even discussion about discounted tickets. Are they not selling these for the marathon?

Thank you so much for your insight! We are currently training for a half marathon on October 21 and we have been incorporating tempo runs and intervals in our mid-week runs since the beginning of June in hopes to decrease our time. So what you're saying is, with having the speedwork already in our plan, that should help with our fitness level and maybe super long runs like 23 and 26 miles aren't as necessary? That would certainly make training for the marathon a little easier to handle.

Precisely. Jeff uses the long run for his strength component and that requires the miles. By pushing that component to the weekdays, it lowers the need for ubber-long. Now the issue is purely a mental game. Judge how well you think you way through the 18 and 20 mile runs... If you the you were fighting the run mentally near the end, you may want to add the miles back... Most folks just get bored.

Is it you or a mark left from the CWx? You describe a bruise so I would expect a little pain associated with the marks. But I could also see some marking from the dyes in the clothing after 10 months of use. If chafing, I would expect some stinging in the shower.

If you are seeing bruising, you may want to visit the doc. Some chronic injuries show as a bruise before going bad.

I kind of figured you would be here....

With regard to tix, generally the marathon has not offered discounted tickets most of the years. I have not seen anything for 2013. I would expect not since the races look to sell out. I am sure if I am mistaken, there will be a correction coming

Have we met Coach? (I'm only asking because I remember your posts, but I didn't think I posted often enough to be remembered. Or do we know each other from somewhere else?)

About the tickets, I mean theme park tickets. They don't do discounts for runners like they do for the princess? Bummer.

Actually.... my bad. Another poster posted yesterday wanting to sleep on it and I never went back to see who...

Ha! No problem. For a second there, I thought maybe you were one of my Facebook friends and that's how you knew I was mulling it over. But I don't know anyone from Richmond, TX. LOL Thanks for the encouragement anyway :)

Congrats! You sound just like me - the Princess this year was my first half, and I did another one not long after that. Decided to make the jump to the full mostly because of the excitement of the 20th anniversary! I have had moments of marathon-sign-up regret, but when they unveiled the medal this week that all went away. Good luck with training! :thumbsup2

Well, I did it. The lure of Disney characters on a rubbery "medallion" was too much to resist. I am in for DOPEY!

The 5K will most definitely be 100% walking and just having fun. And that Friday afternoon will most definitely be spent NAPPING in prep for the real work on Saturday and Sunday. :)

Those who know me know that I only run 3-3.5 hours as a training run - this usually results in a 16 mile long run going into Goofy. I caveat this with the understanding that we run hills and speed work during the week. there are no 'maintenance runs'

Is there a definition of a hill? Is it something that is steep and short or longer with more gradual elevation climb? Should the hills be repeated or just part of a run? I hate short and steep, but don't mind long hills. I also hate speed work and intervals since I only have one pace (a comfortable 10 mm) regardless of run length or whether it is training or racing. I guess I will stick to running more distance and cross train for strength.

Thanks so much for all the great info!

Thank you so much Coach Charles!
I admit I am not strictly following a plan, mostly because I am currently training for a half Ironman so I am doing a lot of swimming and biking right now along with the running. I have been adding a mile every other week, and doing a moderate run (4-6miles) on the alternate week. I'm only running once or twice a week right now.
I can guess that my shoes have about 400-500 miles on them, but the wear on the soles looks good so I hadn't thought to change them. Maybe I should?
I ran 10 miles last weekend, and started having some pain on the inside of my right knee about halfway through. It was bad enough that I walked with a limp the rest of the day b/c it hurt to bend my knee. I am considerably better, but I want to do whatever I can to avoid making a small injury a big one, so I think I'll start to "Do the Galloway" and see if it helps.
Really can't say how much I appreciate your advice! :thumbsup2

Change the shoes out. It isn't the sole, but the foam that breaks down--often leading to knee and back pain. Every combination of runner and shoe is different, but you probably want to start considering the foam wear at 300 miles. When you compress the heal if it forms wrinkles in the sides that weren't there new that is one sign. For me, back pain does it too.

Also, are you preventitively icing your knees? I routinely ice mine after hard workouts (I use a blue ice bag holder that looks like a knee brace). I also do ice baths for anything 19 miles and over. You get used to them and they really help.

Did you have a Mayan Princess costume on for the PHM?

It's a bruise on my calf. I don't know if I'm "jarring" the muscle during my runs. No stinging but like a typical b&b, feels tender when I press it. I really can't find any info on google.

Yes! :hyper:

Awww! Glad you're running the marathon too!! I'm nervous and it's still 5 months away!

Me too!! :faint: Are you going with your husband or on your own this time? (I'm making assumptions of the guy who was in your pictures ;-) )

Wearing a costume? Do people really wear costumes for the marathon? Or is that more of a thing for the Princess?

My definition of a hill for endurance running is one where after warming up, you can run up the hill at a higher intensity (say a 9 out of 10 relative effort) for a period of up to 3-5 minutes. A longer less steep hill will work, especially if you push the turn over during the interval. If one is kind of a sadist, I have a treadmill workout where after warming up we run intervals starting at 6% and increasing to 10% incline.

Thank you so much Coach Charles!

I agree that the shoes seem rather old.
