You don't do this in races though do you? I'm lucky if I can count to 3 in the last miles of a race. No way I can do any significant math. :faint:

as a Spinning Coach, I kind of do it out of habit. You do not want an instructor spinning at 72 rpm when they are encouraging you to be at 90 (the same as a 180 turnover).

I would never count a minute. Rather its a count of 15 foot falls on one leg in 10 sec or 21/22 footfalls in 15 seconds.

You would find me on the side of the road spazzing out if I were to count the entire minute

What do you folks do to get a good nights sleep the night before a big race? PHM was my first and I DID NOT sleep well that night. Was in bed by 8:30 PM. Kept waking up, tossing and turning and when I felt like I finally fell into a deep sleep, the music from Epcot woke me up.

Even at home, I'm very fidgety the night before, even with the small races I've done. I've tried going to sleep earlier or later, it doesn't matter. I thought about trying melatonin but I'm afraid to take anything

Since I have a 1/2 in 26 days, I need some ideas.

Is it my imagination or does it seem rather early compared to last year for a total sell out?

Actually, I do not believe the Marathon sold out; rather, the entries were closed 'to save face'

Since 2010, the races have been slow to fill. This has been a function of larger entry lists for all three races, increasing cost of entry and the economy. As a result, the races have filled rather late. Though before this 3 year period, the races filled quicker than many have seen. Traditionally, Goofy filled in the late Spring, Donald in early to mid summer and the full between mid September and early November. Also, between 03/04 and 2011, the race entries were open the Monday after the marathon, not April as they are now or March as before the period.

This year is the quickest I recall the full filling. The fastest Donald was for the 02 race when it filled in about 4 weeks. That was the 5th anniversary. The fastest Goofy to sell out was the 07 or 08 when it sold out in about 3 weeks.

It's good to see that the races are filling earlier. Its a sign that the event is in deed healthy. Hopefully we will not be rewarded with a huge price increase for 2014.

Honestly? Get a good night sleep two nights before. I have run seven Disneyland halfs, two Disneyworld fulls, and several other marathons. Never slept well for any of them. Just part of the event.

I will say that on occasion that I have taken a small Ambien the night before. Ambien doesn't work well for me normally because it doesn't last long enough and I wake up early, but that is perfect for an early marathon.

Other tactics: listen to music in bed until I sleep; watch "Spirit of the Marathon" in bed.

The night before the night before! Seriously, if the half is on Saturday, your best night sleep should be Thursday night. No matter how many races you have run nor how well prepared (or poorly prepared) you are, you will not get a good night's sleep on that Friday. You may want to try pushing the thermostat to the very minimum temp, but that creates the issue of not wanting to get out of bed and possibly over sleeping.

For traveling events, that creates a secondary issue. Folks who travel a lot understand that the first night in a new bed is also very tough. Since many attending Disney arrive on Thursday, that leads to a possible double whammy. So rest is in order Friday afternoon. A nap would do wonders for travel fatigue but possibly create issues later in the evening.

So, get your rest earlier int he week and just know that you will be restless that night

Oh joy. I'm traveling on Thursday night. I'll try to be well rested before I get to Disney. At least I know it's not just me.

I think that is a challenge for me every time. I have taken melatonin and it has helped without the morning hangover. Maybe because it is natural. Sometimes I have even added L-theanine. Another huge thing for me is putting in wax earplugs. I am a light sleeper so that really helps. I will say it has gotten easier for me each race. Good luck!;)

I am also a fan of melatonin. We took them for the Disneyland Half, and slept like babies.

I cannot wait to run tomorrow!!! The humidity in NC has been brutal! When I ran Saturday my heart rate was in the high 160's.:crazy2: tomorrow morning is supposed to be 50 degrees! Yea!

A few years ago I ran the Chicago marathon and it was 87 degrees. The next year I ran the marine corp and dropped my time 45 minutes because it was only 50 degrees. Amazing what weather and humidity can do! Hopefully at 5 am it will be a little cool?!

How many milligrams did you take?

Prmami maybe you should try the melatonin sometime before and set your alarm clock like it is race day a few times and see how you do.

I was going to suggest this, also. My DW takes it to help get past a couple issues and it is all too easy to either take so little that you fee no effect or conversely, go too far the other way and end up overly groggy. That is the delta between 1 and 3 for her.

For me, I will just toss and turn the night prior knowing that I will dose off and get enough sleep for race day. Or in case of Disney race days. That way I do not have to deal with a possible artificial grogginess

I take 3mg of melatonin . If I use L-theanine (relaxer) it is 100 mg of that. The L-theanine kind of keeps your mind from racing/ takes the anxiety down a little. But again no hangover the next day with either!

Let me clarify 3 mg is only one tablet. 100 mg of the l-theanine is one tablet as well.

I agree with all of the above - test it out in advance, obviously.

We just took one tablet (3mg), to help us doze off, but there have been times when we've taken two tablets. But those tend to be times when we have the opportunity to sleep for a good 7-8 hours.

I was thinking about doing this. I'll probably try it next Monday and Wednesday night . DH is working the early shift next week and in order to get a run in, I have to be up by 3 so I can get to the gym by 4, run for an hour and be home by 5:30 when he has to leave. The timing is similar so i think I can mimic the race morning.

The tossing and turning drives me nuts. DS uses 1mg every night because he takes Metadate in the morning so it's just enough to quiet him down and get him to sleep soundly.

I hate when my mind races at night. Or when the stupid hook of a certain Lady Gaga song gets stuck in my head and I can't sleep because of it.

Hello all!

I'm officially signed up for the Goofy Race and a Half challenge for this coming January at Disney's Marathon weekend. However, life got in the way and I won't be able to make it down there until Saturday morning. Realistically, I'll have to bag the half-marathon and only run the full.

Do you think I will still be able to pick up my race packet on Saturday like the full-marathon runners, even though I'm signed up for the Goofy (which says to pick up on Thurs/Fri)?

I'd recommend contacting runDisney directly for your situation (https://www.rundisney.com/help/contact/) or have someone pick up your packet for you.
