Ok - I'll ask - and I feel dumb...what's turnover? How many times you take a stride in a certain period of time?

I wasn't sure either so I googled it.

http://beginners.runnersworld.com/2008/10/what-is-turnover-and-how-do-you-improve-it.html

It's the amount of steps you take in two minutes.

Almost, its the number of foot falls in a minute. So a turnover of 180 means 180 steps in a minute. Where some confusion may exist is that the either leg is only stepping half that or in the example, 90 times a minute.... i guess if you hopped it would all be on one leg.

Echoing John.

These improvements should take the rest of this training season to implement. If you find your turnover is 120 just speeding the legs up tomorrow will create a huge increase in heart rate and you will fatigue quickly. Practice and keep drilling once a week to work on mid to forefoot falls and higher turnover.

Aso, for 95%+ of the runners you will see, stride lengths are just right or too long. Just go with what feels good and do some speed play drills in addition to hills for form practice. Here is a quick link for some dirlls. Please note the contra-indications and note that in a marathon build, I would not do these more than every other week - and only 2-4 of the drills in the video.

My bolding. That increase in heart rate can be a killer. That's where spinning comes in handy but for myself I just hit the road cycling. Got out Saturday for a great 55 miler hitting 170+bpm numerous times while maintaining 160bpm at which I ride forever but can't duplicate on foot yet. It most certainly takes time and what happens all too often to runners who do not pay attention to their body is INJURIES.

I would love to run in MetLife stadium!

I will share any info I get. For this year's race I found out about it from the Giants Facebook page. It was put on by the NY Road Runners Club. I'll keep and eye on their site too. It was a great race. We saw Amani Toomer before, he was running it too. The shirts they had were really nice too! Actually wearing mine now!

I haven't even run the marathon yet and I'm already planning races for afterward...
I was thinking of doing the Rock'n'Roll 1/2 marathon in DC in mid March, but would that be too soon? Too much? This is my 1st marathon so I have no idea how I'm going to feel afterwards, and I'm really loving the 1/2 marathon... I'd lobby for changing the name to "just right."

Nothing wrong with looking forward to other races. Keeps the motivation up to keep training rather than possibly falling off the wagon and stop running.

We too are looking at another race - the Princess 1/2 in February. In the meantime BEFORE the 1/2 in January, we may be trying the Rock'n'Roll in Savannah, GA. I've heard very positive reviews from the Rock'n'Roll series.

I wish I knew what plan I should do! I will have ~14 weeks from the beginning of October--and my hopeful clearance to resume running. I would like to spend the rest of October "running easy". Work my way back up to my typical 3 runs/wk (2 shorter runs of 5-6 and a long run). Then in November I would like to start ramping up the mileage in order to have 1 long run of 20 miles to weeks before Goofy. I probably won't do speedwork, but will try to get in some tempo runs.

I was doing 30+ miles/week before I developed my stress fracture--not "excessively" training, on a combo of hard and soft surfaces, in shoes that are appropriately cushioned for my short, neutral-pronated mid-forefoot gait. So I am baffled about how this happened and even more baffled about how I keep it from happening again. And about what my distance progression should be when I return (my idea is just a guess). I wish I could find a local "doctor/runner/coach" who could help me out!

Trying to be sensible about all this (hey--at least I have finally given up on showing up in NY to run the marathon!)

I found I was ready to all out race a 5k by the beginning of March last year, following the marathon. But everyone is different.

I know I definitely want to do the NYC 1/2 and TRY to get into the NYC marathon next November. 2013 may be our last year living in NY so I want to try and get in before we move.

I'm hoping to run another half down in Bentonville, AR on April 6 after having run the full in January. I'm hoping that's an adequate recovery/training time for me as well.

So I just called wdwirun and they were not able to give me a standard view at the animal kingdom, however I am able to get a standard view on the WDW website. The operator was telling me that she cannot guarantee that I will have marathon transportation if I do not book through Irun. Is this true???? Everything on the marathon website just says as long as you stay at a Disney resort you have transportation. The operator stated that the only way they can track how many buses disney needs for marathon is if you book through Irun. Please share your thoughts as I would like to book a room today. Thank you!:)

You do not need to book through Irun. You can just book through the regular Disney site. And you will have transportation. I've never booked through the special site - oh wait, I did once for the Wine and Dine Half because they actually had a better room rate. I can't begin to imagine how many DVCer's are there for marathon weekend using their points - tons!! No worries, you can book that standard AKL room on the regular WDW website!!

Question for John VN or other veteran walkers: Should I taper near the marathon as I would with running? If so, what do you suggest? (I'm doing the Goofy.)

I was all set to do the 9+1 guaranteed entry for the NYC marathon and then of course I got a job in DC and have to move. I have to figure out how they judge the time, could I do a bunch now and it would count towards 2013 or would I have to start in January and it would count towards 2014?

Not true. I can guarantee you that.

Nope. It has to be in the same calendar year.

I'm sure you can all do the math, but that is 3 foot steps per second. You can watch your seconds on your watch and count 1-2-3, 1-2-3 . . .

If you haven't worked with this before you will be surprised how much this dictates the speed at which you run. For my long races is is my single focus in the second half of the race. If my turnover (cadence) is on track, then my speed usually is too.
