Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

Thank you! To clarify, we are not doing a tempo run and repeats in the same week. We took HH Intermediate 2 plan and instead of doing one of the easy runs in the week, added a day of speedwork, which will either be intervals, tempo, or hills, depending on the week. Hal also has you do a marathon pace run every other weekend, starting at around 6 miles and building to 10-12 I believe. So, in our current schedule, we will do all "easy" miles 2-3 days per week, one day of "speedwork," and then the marathon pace runs on the weekends that are required. We were careful to never have 2 hard days back to back. The main problem I am having I think is that I am just not at all sure what my marathon pace will be, since it's our first, so it is hard for me to decide what pace to run on my various runs, KWIM? We do have a 1/2 in November and I will use that race to help determine my goals/paces after that, but until then, it's a little up in the air.

Yeah, you will know quite a bit after that half. It should be easy to dial in your MP after that.

For the first time in my running career I have upped to two speedworks per week (M and W), but one of them is much less strenuous and is often at MP or 1/2MP pace, rather than 5k or faster. I'll know the results of this on Sunday morning--although my real goal is to do well in the WDW 1/2 in January.

First off, no reason to feel inferior. You are an athlete who has yet to reach your potential. Nothing wrong with walking.

I am a walker just starting to jog and run. Been speed walking for 2.5 years due to bad knees but now able to experiment with the jogging and running stride.

Regarding my bolding in your reply, I have the same feeling. Until I do more jogging than walking, I'm a walker and will be the same for running.

Be proud of your accomplishments!

John VN is a vet, so his advice is far more trustworthy than mine, but I totally agree with him for what it's worth. I'm going to be walking the goofy because I have bad knees and can't effectively train running. Don't feel inferior and remember (certainly with no disrespect to the many runners) the medals are the same no matter how, or how quickly, you finish.

Everyone crosses the same finish line and gets the same medal. Who cares if you walk, run, wog, cartwheel, roll, crawl or whatever your way across it. There is something to be said for those of us who are still out there while the winner has already showered and boarded a flight back to Kenya :rolleyes1

Okay that made me laugh!!!!

I am strictly a walker and I did not feel inferior to the runners. I found everyone to be kind in the race. I was sooo proud to finally cross that finish line...I cried like a baby as they put my medal around my neck...not one person cared about my time...they only wanted to celebrate that we had finished! No matter your time...finshing is really all that matters! YOU CAN & WILL DO IT!!!

Yes! I love the back of my 2008 Half Shirt. It reads: "Run, Walk, Jog, or Waddle!" Whatever gets you across that finish line. Even if it's waddling. :lmao:

AMEN to all who are able to walk, jog, run, or waddle. We are all of many different ages and many different abilities and some even with health issues that still press on because of our own free will and determination!! I'm glad that Disney celebrates all of those who cross that finish line. :) :dance3:
It really does bring out the magic in all things Disney.

I was planning on registering for the Half, but having already run the route this year, I finally decided to fully commit to the full marathon. I have been feeling strong in my training and am so excited to run my first marathon at Disney...and the quote on the medal is perfect!! Can't wait to cheer everyone on!

I will be 45 years 11.5 months when I participate in the WDW 2014 marathon. (I had typed run, but I know it will be a run / walk combo thing :) ) I'm a guy. I pretty much promise that I will have tears of joy, pain, accomplishment, _insert_other_emotion_here. I used to think that since I dont think I could 'run' a marathon, that I would never be in one. I really didnt know that you were 'allowed' to walk it til I started reading about most marathons with their 16 min pace. Then I had it in my head that 'if you dont run it, it doesnt count' then I realized that what the hell am I thinking. If anyone can even WALK 26.2 miles in one stretch that's more then probably 99% of the population will do (ok I made that stat up). No longer do I feel that way and am looking forward to be able to have the 26.2 sticker, maybe even the 39.3 ;)

Well I am starting to stress out... I was playing softball the other night and fell. I spanned my MCL and I am now out for 4 to 6 weeks. at least I can use a stationary bike.

The was I look at it 26.2 miles is 26.2 miles and 13.1 miles is 13.1 miles no matter how you get there they are both huge accomplishments that no one can ever take away from you.

Sorry to hear that. You should still be able to do the half with 12 weeks of training!

I'm signed up for the full. I was looking at my galloway plan and I think I am going to be ok. I have 2 half under my belt from this summer and if I keep up on using a stationary bike I should be fine. I might have to adjust what time I wanted to finish the full in but I can still do it.

They said 4-6 weeks and it is milder than last time I sprained my MCL back in 2004 that one took about 5 weeks to heal.

Speedy healing to all of the participants with injuries. I haven't done any short runs this week due to my own stupidity. I had to buy new soccer cleats for DD and had her kicking a soccer ball to me to try them out. Well, she kicked it harder than I thought she would and when I tried to trap the ball, I bruised my chin. It only hurts when I run with a midfoot strike not when I walk. Going running in the Poconos mountains tomorrow morning so hopefully it's better.

Tomorrow morning is my first double-digit run. 10 miles. Right now we're pretty socked in with rain from the remnants of Isaac and it's likely to be raining tomorrow while we run, so send out some good vibes for the rain to blow over tonight!

You should do well. Make sure to take time off - even a couple weeks now is better than trying to push hard through the injury. The body requires energy to heal and 14 days off (even from cycling) is not a huge deficit. Once you pass the two weeks, then hop on the cycle and push on.

Once cleared, pull back and ramp into the schedule. Just jumping in is a recipe for a new injury. PM if you need specific ideas.

I have a question about the pace. It says 16 minutes per miles, so how long do you have maximum to finish the 5K if you are walking it at that pace? I tried to calculate it in my head, and I either have it wrong, or my walking pace is waaayyyy too slow.

Marathon should be full soon. They're giving people at DL 1/2 Expo a discount.
