I haven't read through all of this, but what happened to the Chip and Dale race? My daughter and I did it last year and were going to do it again but I don't see the option.
I just registered for the Full - it will be my first full, so I am excited and nervous. I am done quite a few halfs, but have never had the nerve to go for the full.
My best race season ever last year at age 50 have given me a whole new confidence level and the idea of being part of the 20th anniversary made it too good to pass up.
This is a huge step for me, but I know that I will find lots of support on this board.
Thanks everyone!!
Well said! I was so concerned about my time when training for the 2011 Wine and Dine that I ended up more stressed after my long runs. I'm planning to do my first full as the Mickey, and just in the last week or so, I've realized that I've got to choose: time goal or distance. Despite physical therapy, chiropractics, and using a run/walk method, my knee cannot handle going my desired speed for long runs. It can make the distance if I go slower. I want to be in this for the long haul, so I'm going to slow down my long runs and hope I can make running my happy place again.

Me too. Registered for my first full with the Mickey 20 anniversary being my primary motivator....that and what a way to celebrate my 40th (eek) birthday.

I don't know that I've heard an official reason for the relay not being a part of the weekend this year, but speculation is that there would be more interest in the full marathon by itself with the anniversary. I'm pretty sure I read an email someone had sent to Disney that said the relay would be back in the future. Seems silly to introduce it one year, then not have that option the next year...
jimandami - tough decision.
Just based on the amount of hours you run per week now - 30-35 miles, you should have no problems training for a full. I think I peaked at 30-35 miles/week when I trained for the full AND Goofy.
Of course, the other factors involved could be a problem - working 60-80 hr/week, 2 small kidlets, maxed out on time, etc. Don't forget, you'll also have to train through the holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think that's what makes it tough for a lot of people.
However, this is the 20th anniversary of the full. There will be a special anniversary medal. It will be a fun weekend...with the focus on the anniversary. The full is a great challenge with a great reward (as are all the races). If you decide to go for the full, you have plenty of time to work out a training program, line up sitters in advance, work out a backup plan due to issues that might come up, get support from family/friends, etc. I'm not trying to push you one way or another. You have a tough decision to make.
Good luck! Let us know what you decide. You'll get plenty of support here no matter what race you decide to do.![]()

I did my first marathon at 51, also at Disney, so I know how you feel. Good luck with your training.

Thanks so much! I think we should go for the full...will talk to DH tonight! We are pretty dedicated as far as getting workouts in, as we have been working out 6 days/week for about a 1 1/2 years...before that, I was 70 lbs heavier and couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without being SOB. I think doing a full would just be a huge accomplishment for us both....one that would not have even been a consideration back then! We trained for the 1/2 through T-giving and Christmas last year and it wasn't too much of a problem...in fact, I believe we ran 12 miles on Christmas morningThank you again for your advice and I will definitely let you know what we decide.

Ohhhhhh, if you can make it work with your schedule, sounds like you need to go for it! That 20th anniversary medal will be the crowning glory for your hard work and dedication over the last few years. You can do it!
Just a word of warning......
These races are addicting.![]()
I'm not sure how young your kids are, but two of my friends are runners and they find their way around this by having the kids bike alongside them on their 10-mile and shorter long runs. The kids love it-- they hold mom and dad's water, get to bike around the river, and they'll have a picnic at the end of it. Kind of makes me want to find some neighborhood kids for my long runs.
Thank you everyone who posted their support.
My morning started off on a downer when I excitedly told my sister that I had registered for the full and not only didn't get any support, but got a pretty nasty and hurtful comment about it. Some choice words were exchanged.
Coming here on my lunch hour and seeing all the words of encouragement has really helped my mood.
Hi Everyone -
I'm registered for the 2013 half marathon. I've done a few Disney races in the past, but this will be my first trip and race during marathon weekend. I've run a few half marathons locally in Central Indiana and a few races at WDW including several 5ks. That's about the extent of my running experience. I'm also singed up to run the ToT 10-Miler this September. Can't wait for that too.
I'm a blogger for the DIS Unplugged and will probably write some blogs chronicling my training and build-up to the 2013 WDW Half Marathon. Good luck to all of you as your train for your 2012 and 2013 races. I'll be checking in here often.![]()

I know how you feel. My old boss looked me dead in the eye and told me I could never do Goofy. That I wouldn't finish. Thankfully he is my OLD boss, I quit last week!
And my inlaws seem to think I will have trouble too, since I had an injury this past fall (bad Achilles) that hampered my half marathon effort in October. I am healed and ready to take on the training. Some people are only happy if they make you miserable.
I think people who don't think THEY could accomplish a certain goal try to ease their own feeling of inadequacy by convincing themselves and others that no one else can accomplish it either. Rather than encouraging and celebrating someone else's achievement or goal, they try to belittle it or convince you it is unreachable.
I just use those comments as more motivation to 'make it happen'.![]()
Rick-you are absolutely right! And all it does is make me want to prove you wrong all the more. But its part of the reason I left my job-I could no longer deal with the negative attitude of the boss and my one co-worker. I need people around me who support me in my weight loss and running, not cut me down. And I have found that with my new job.
