Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

I'll be crossing my fingers! Even a discounted repair would be helpful, though with the race so close, getting something done fast enough is going to be interesting... :)

I had to get my Garmin replaced. When I called the help desk, they gave me a choice:

I could send it in, pay $80 (or so) and when they received it, then would send me a refurbished one.

Or

I could pay $150ish, they would send me a replacement watch immediately, then refund half of the money when I sent my bad watch to them. I did this and, IIRC, received the replacement watch pretty quickly.

Man this thread is moving fast! Trying to keep up.

Was supposed to do 11 today and 2 miles in my ankle started hurting again! Ugh! I'm so frustrated! It felt pretty good during last week's 20 miler but I have the same darkened oval and pain right above my inner ankle bone after finishing off with 5 miles today. Prior MRIs showed no issues there except for an enlarged vein. I've been icing and compressing. Sure hope it rectifies itself quickly this time!

Today in Tampa it was 36 degrees with a feels like 30 due to the winds. That was a little too chilly but I think temps in the mid 40s would be perfect to start.

Hope everyone has a good, restful, injury free two weeks!

That sounds pretty encouraging! I've emailed their customer service department, and will probably call them tomorrow depending on whether I hear from them or not. They promise a 3 business day response, so that doesn't leave much time. Bad time to break a watch.:worried:

Not too techy so I really want to know about the garmin/Nike watch. Over the years I have used a polar watch to keep up with time, heart rate, calories, etc..... I'm now running in a Nike free shoe and it has a place in the shoe for a chip. What do these watches do that I have not mentioned? Do they keep track of distance in correlation with the chip you would put in the shoe?

They have a GPS in the watch which measures how fast you're going to where you're going. The shoe sensor measures your footsteps for a more accurate reading.

Actually, the foot pod may not be more accurate to be precise - it depends on calibrating when you get it, every few weeks as fitness and gait changes and anytime it is removed from the shoe for a battery change or just moved to another shoe. It is also a little less accurate for a run/walker than a continuous runner or continuous walker. The largest delta between a calibrated foot pod system and a GPS unit is the location functionality.

For the op, the Garmin uses GPS for positioning, speed and distance. Some models will also work with foot pods for use indoors on a treadmill. The newer Nike watches will work with either a foot pos or by GPS. TImex also has a robust GPS system. Of the GPS systems, Garmin is the more robust and has been in the marketplace the longest.

Depending on the model of Polar you have, you may be able to add a foot pod to it to get the speed and distance functionality. Look up the model number to see if it is one of these Polar units.

Which Polar do you have? I use a RS800CX with GPS and it does a lot more than the Nike does. It depends upon what you need the most. Polar is great (maybe the best) as a heart rate monitor and calculating effort/calories, etc. Their GPS works okay but I think Garmin and Timex might have better GPS solutions, although their newest watch has built-in GPS and I haven't played with that one.

Polar devices from the RS300X and above will all use a FootPod sensor as an option. Calibration is the key to accuracy as is the consistency of your gait/cadence which the footpads can report in real-time. Some but not all Polar watches will also work with a separate GPS unit (which I use) and you can use that instead of the FootPod (or use both sensors if you want the cadence information).

It's the RS200. I have had it for five years so I doubt it does that. So if I understand correctly it lets you keep track of how fast each mile or any distance you run is as you are going along? Can you map a run and figure out the distance before you run it? I know; I'm not too savvy...my kids have to help with the VCR remote!

I do not believe the Nike watch can help you 'plan' out a run ahead of time. But it will record your pacing, speed, and distance. I am not sure if it does heart rate monitoring. Garmins, Timex, and the newer Polar models like the RC3 can do all that plus the heart rate monitoring. Some watches will allow you to create training plans, handle intervals for walk/run, etc.

If you want to plan out a run ahead of time. You can use www.mapmyrun.com which is great for mapping out a route, and then printing it out or and/or saving it for future use.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I may have to be like my DH and get GAS. That would be Gear Acquisition Syndrome. :rotfl:

Who's wearing a costume and how are they coming along in being made?

I am dressing as village belle. I just ordered the pieces today and making a trip to hobby lobby tomorrow to get lace, ribbon and fabric to finish it.

I'm back after not posting for a while! I finally got my 20 miler done on the treadmill tonight. Took almost 5 hours, but I did it. I didn't really have any foot pain, but my knees and hamstrings weren't too happy. My PT told me as long as the pain didn't get too severe I was good to go, so I keep on moving! Hopefully another 2 weeks of physical therapy will help me out for marathon!

I definitely needed do the 20 miles mentally. I feel a lot better now! I will be taking it easy for the taper!

To sum up my training, I've done 16, 18 and 20 for my long runs. I've also done a couple 12, 10 and 8 milers. Do you guys think I have enough of a base? I got injured (had 3 injuries two weeks ago) from overuse because I ramped up the training, so I missed the last two weeks. I'm hoping this is enough!

I am going to dress as Donald for the full.
I am wearing a white lululemon skirt, yellow tights and a blue top (sleeve length tbd based on temp). I am gluing big white buttons onto safety pins and am making a collar from felt that I will safety pin to my top.

I must have spoke too soon.....

I stood up and now have identical pain in my right foot that I originally had as a compensation injury in my left foot. At least I'm going for a follow up tomorrow anyway? When will the injuries end!

On the costume front, the plan is for a magic carpet costume. I've got the blue skort and shirt, just need to sew a cover for both that I can pain the design on.

Foam Roll your calves really well tonight. Ice and elevate the foot.

Sorry to hear about everyone's gps watch problems. I have had mine for about two years...and it just died. I ended up buying myself a last minute Christmas gift. I got the garmin 910. I wasn't planning on spending so much at such an expensive time of the year. But on the upside...I am glad it happened before race weekend. I have been able to run/experiment with it before the big day.

Also, I feel like a baby whining about my 40 degree cold weather haha! I cant imagine running in such cold temps.

The 910XT is great. I've had mine for almost a year but lately the HR has been giving me fits. Have followed Garmin Tech. directions but still can't believe my HR is 238bpm even though I'm pushing 31mph on my bike.
