Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

Hi folks.

I just wandered by this thread and was surprised to see my bib # and corral placement on the first page. OK, it just says, "myweegirls' husband," but last I checked, that's me. So, hi!

The 2013 Half Marathon will be my second, although the first was about 15 years ago or so, so I feel like it's new enough that I am now cramming to get all the good advice I can. Also, 15 years on, most of those not running regularly, my speed is down. You know how people say about guys sometimes, "He's not conventionally handsome?" In a similar vein, I am not conventionally fast.

I hope to move up in my corral placement; I was able to for the ToT 10 Miler, and, just like that race, I didn't submit an expected finish time to the runDisney folks before I got to the race Expo and check-in. I finished the ToT race about 5 minutes behind my DW, so I feel like, based on that result, I should be able to at least get closer to the B corral (where she is), so my corral placement will not put me even further behind her clock time.

At this point, I'm excited, and a bit nervous, although I am counting on the race weather to be better than the ToT 10 Miler. I'd like to wish everyone injury-free tapers all the way to race day, and thanks for letting me poke my head in to say hi.

Before time slips away and everyone is headed off to Orlando, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Coach Charles and everyone else who has offered advice and encouragement preparing for the race.

I don't post much but read often and am thankful for the advice/suggestions from running veterans on here.

Ditto to that. Coach Charles' advice pretty much saved the Disneyland Marathon for me when I ran into some health issues during training.

Thank you to everyone else who's been so supportive.
I'm running the Half with my sister, so we'll see you on the road.
And then on Marathon Day, I've just booked the Platinum Cheer Squad so I can cheer on my husband, who is doing the Goofy, so I'll be cheering on all of you, too!!:cheer2:

Now to plan a sign...

This is the video that had me thinking of it. I have cycled with it a bunch of times but never a race

Hey Coach!

Finally got around to watching the video because I couldn't watch it on my ipad at home. I love it!!! I noticed there is not a lot of shaking in the video. That's pretty cool stabilization right there! Is it comfortable to wear on your head for that long?

You actually forget it's there... well, other than the fact you think everyone is looking at you. But as the video shows, folks seem to know what is going on with the camera.

I purchased this more for a log when out cycling. There are enough Bubba Joe Six-packs with the really long camper mirrors who want to see how close they come come to buzzing a cyclist's left ear. I figure it could be helpful if I ever need proof after the fact. The issue with cycling is that the battery does not last as long as some of the rides.

[ADDED]

A friend of mine has a really nice stabilization rig. It's a simple 3 foot long pole with a small counter weight bar off the bottom. This is so much better than the head mount... but not something I want to run 26 with.

Just looked at our friends at LaccuWeather and see that while they go out to 20 something days, their models do not kick in until the 15 day window. It seems as though the models are bouncing off of the historic average today with expect race start temps 52 (5k), 48 and 48. The highs for Friday are little warm for those who are trying to hit a park. Stay hydrated. The average temp on Saturday is 60F, making the half manageable. The average temp on Sunday warms a little up to 61, but will near 70 for those finishing after noon. It's going to feel a little warm near the end, but so much better than if the starts were over 60F

Running a bit behind here but for some reason this forum and my work computer do not get along.

Bib #s - both Goofy

Patrick 27067

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Was thinking about getting an iFitness belt but I'm wondering if I should wait for the expo or order it online using the 15% discount code that's in the program. Does anyone know if the prices at the expo reflect any discounts?

Okay....we're getting closer and closer to race day and I always find myself scouring the internet for motivational videos, stories, etc.

Well, a couple of years ago I started making photo videos after I did my first Ironman. Two months after my race, she was to do her first marathon in the same place I did my first.....Walt Disney World. I decided to not race Disney that year and let her have her day in the sun. She had been there for so many of my races. The early morning wake ups, the drives, morning after morning with our newborn while I was out Ironman training, she was such an unbelievable support system and truly embodied the team aspect of an "individual" sport.

She was never an athlete growing up...I mean she was on the swim team (we were on the team together as kids and never knew each other finding out years after we were married from an old photo), but more of the girly girl dancing and cheerleading, so for her to start running, doing duathlons and triathlons was a complete shock to me. I had my doubts at first, but her perseverance came through like I have never seen. She hit alot of obstacles in her path to race day, but she never let it her veer her from her goal. Since this marathon she has had three knee surgeries and will likely never be able to run again (maybe a couple miles here and there, but it's just not worth it to her for the pain it causes) so I put together this video from her race back in January of 2010.

I thought over the next couple days/weeks till we all depart, I would post some other videos I have made (some from Ironman) just as a way to to take our minds off of things, see how fun all this stuff can be, what life is like for other runners our there and maybe even find a little motivation.

I hope you all enjoy and to my beautiful courageous wife (the lurker who will definitely see this post but never comment), you still amaze me every day.

that was awesome and beautiful. I was crying reading your post earlier this morning; just watched the video and it made me cry some more. Good tears, of course! Awesome! :) Incidentally, your daughter is almost the same age as my daughter. She was born Oct 21st same year.

That was cool. I watched this video first. I am such a goober, I started crying when I saw the Half Marathon portion. So, if any of you see a red-faced, sweaty woman in a Team Gleason "NO WHITE FLAGS" shirt sobbing and smiling during the Half--that will be me. LOL I am so excited for Marathon Weekend!

I guess last night was the night for Marathon dreams!

During my dream, I was in a panic because I was going to have to either skip the marathon or start late, since I was going to have to go to school and take a test that they wouldn't let me make up later. Never mind that I haven't been in school in over 20 years and the full is on a Sunday. :rotfl2:

I was trying to figure out how I was going to run fast enough not to get swept, or if I had to defer the race, how I would explain that to people who'd donated on my Give Kids the World page that's tied to the race. It was such a relief to wake up and realize it was all a crazy nightmare. Whew!

Meanwhile, I'm fighting angry shins and calves...

I just wanted to pop in here and say good luck to everyone preparing for their race(s) this Marathon weekend. I am not running in any of them so I don't usually post on this thread but I completed the Wine & Dine half last month and I felt I needed to show some support for my fellow DIS-runners. I can't thank you Dis-ers all enough for the support and advice and encouragement and company that you provided to me during my training.

Good luck to all of you! We are so proud of you not just for running next weekend but for even starting out on this journey, for all of the effort you've put forth, the sacrifices you have made, the challenges and pain you have dealt with, and the inspiration that you have been for many months leading up to this time.

:) i WISH you a peaceful, uneventful taper
:) i WISH you a fun and happy race
:) i WISH you safe travels and and enjoyable vacation
May you all finish, injury-free, with a smile on your face, in the Happiest Place on Earth. pixiedust:

Actually, in an 'old school' way, running in the current race shirt is bad form. In the old days, shirts were finisher shirts and handed out as you crossed the finish. From a practical standpoint, you would be running in a new shirt that you had never used on a run. It could easily chafe.

So saying all this, to the older folks (like me) running in the race shirt screams rookie. However, only a tenth as much as the runners you see with their bib on their back. (why do would they call it a bib otherwise?) Will anyone pull you aver or call you out. Doubt it. In fact as the sport opens to more and more new runners it seems to be even more common to see runners in the race shirt. So maybe its a coming thing where not wearing the race shirt will be considered bad form. Further, as a friend pointed out, it was going to be the only time she would ever wear the shirt. I only post to let you know the history and why some folks may give you a funny look....

Have a great race....

I think that wearing a race shirt that is given out during an Expo is an invitation to the athlete to wear the shirt if so desired. Baring the chafing issue, why not? My shirt from a recent Rev3tri does say "finisher" on it and it was given out after crossing the finish line; however, in my case I did not get it at that time because I was escorted to the medical tent due to my bike crash at mile 15 of the 56 mile ride and besides, I didn't want to get my blood on it since I still hadn't stopped bleeding.

I enjoy seeing the athletes proudly and enthusiastically wear their event shirt while competing. It really is a special time to get the photos with the shirt on during the event.

I too, wanted to thank everyone here on the boards. This is my first Disney race and only my second Half Marathon as a runner. Your stories of training and your advice and tips have been very helpful. I have been lurking here for over a year, and appreciate everyone's positivity. :lovestruc

During the race the one thing I am going to be working on the most (besides staying injury free) is trying to remind myself to enjoy the run. I know I am going to be so focused on just getting to that finish line that I will need to make an effort to look around, enjoy the people and the energy, the characters etc. Something along the line of the quote that goes, "Life is a journey not a destination"....

I hope you all have a great race. Thanks again. :goodvibes

Cheers to you Tabetha! THANK YOU for your support.!!

THANKS TO Coach.

PS Tabetha ... I left TO in 1996... Don't miss the cold ... miss the city.

A PR for my 4 mile walk/jog today. 48 minutes!! Yes!

Hope that continues for the Half. Started 1/3 intervals last week.
Yeah better late than never. :) I think this mornings cool temp helped too.

So excited to go!! Stuck back in corral F but at least that is an improvement from last year. :)

Hope everyone stays healthy and injury-free!

TTFN.

runDisney has posted the corresponding times for each corral on the assignment lists on the runDisney site.

[REVISED]

Thanks for posting this Coach, I don't think I would have checked again.

So based on the updated corral/bib assignment/expected finish times, can I really expect to move up from Corral F that I was assigned all the way to corral C with my 2:28 half from November?

That would be awesome! That gives me much more comfort about going out and running a nice relaxed race and not pushing myself to overdo it if I'm not at 100% with my recovery from bronchitis.

For the half, yes. You have a case for asking for a B assignment. An 8 minute improvement is not out of the question. THough I think for Disney, you would have a funner race from one corral back.

If you were in the full, then H is where you should camp out. Seemingly the full is seeded with a faster set of runners. I am a little surprised that the difference is as great as it is this year.

ME Tv network is new on my system and am loving Emergency! from the 70's While hokey today, it was cutting edge when broadcast and helped to push the 911 and EMT systems we have today. Hard to think that it was not all that long ago that ambulances simply stacked em, packed em and transported em.

For those who recall this show, I had a small project in the mid 80's in the refinery you see across the street from the real station they used for location shots.

OK back to running.

LOL! I am watching Emergency! right now in fact! I loved that show as a kid, and I still enjoy watching it today. :)
