Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

What do i need to bring as far as a camera? Or are there photopass people at all the character stops? I really didn't want to run with one (I was hoping to not wear a running belt). But if some of the photo ops I have to do myself then I need to find a small lightweight camera. Any suggestions?

I use my iPhone for pictures. I remember the first race I did that I worried that the CM's would have trouble taking pictures using a phone. Well silly me for worrying, TONS of people use their iPhone for pictures! Those CM's are experts at using ALL types of cameras I think. :)

Anyway, if I were to buy a camera to use for races right now, I would get the new mini Nikon camera. I looked at it at Target and it is so tiny! They have it at Amazon with free shipping. Nikon COOLPIX S01

I use the camera on my phone. It's a pretty decent one. There are no photopass photographers at the races, they use a company called Brightroom. But they weren't at all the character stops at the Princess. So it was good to have my own camera. If you have a decent camera on your phone use that. I plan to run with my phone anyway so it's one less thing to bring. Although having said that, my camera was acting wonky on my phone yesterday so I am considering borrowing my daughter's camera. Last year, my phone freaked out and shut off right in Magic Kingdom so I was unable to get a picture with Tiana (who was on my bib) as they didn't have a photographer with her. My phone was back on by mile 7.

Hi all...

Looking for some advice/thoughts.

I'm a new (in 2012) runner... the WDW Half was the first Half marathon I signed up for, though it will be the third I have run.

My training has been going very well, with increased overall mileage and good, effective long runs since my last half on November 18th (Philly HM).

My last run was last Saturday - an easy 7 miles that felt great - and I was originally planning 13 for this Saturday as a virtual HM in honor of the victims in Newtown, CT.

Unfortunately, after that run on Saturday, I started feeling ill... after getting through the holidays, I went to the doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with Acute Bronchitis. I'm on antibiotics, but it is also pretty likely to be viral. I'm finally starting to see some movement with the fever (below 100 this morning instead of the 100.5 - 102.2 range most of the weekend when I was without fever reducer).

Chest congestion is pretty bad, so even if I had energy right now (which I don't) I wouldn't be running anyway.

I'm not too worried about running the 13.1 from a training standpoint... I know I can cover the mileage, and do it pretty easily in less than 3 hours on an average day. I know I've trained enough (a total of almost 900 miles in 2012 so far, averaging over 25 mpw since August) and I'll certainly have rested leg muscles by the time race day arrives.

As long as I can get a couple of medium length runs (6 - 8 miles) in the week before the race, I think I'll feel fine about it.

But what I am concerned with is whether I'll really be recovered enough to run 13.1... the resources on the web seem to say average recovery from acute bronchitis is 2 - 3 weeks... 2 weeks would leave me a week to stretch my legs out, but 3 weeks will mean I'm pushing right up against race day.

I guess I may need to plan on run/walking it and just take it easy to get through.

I hadn't really planned to race for time, but now I'm actually a bit concerned about getting swept.

When I registered, I had no other races to my name, so I am in Corral F... I have proof of my time from Philly (2:28) so I plan to try to move up at the expo... but I'm still concerned about how far/fast I can make it if I am still not quite 100%.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ted

Ted, as others have said... get well. You may want to visit a doc to get a boost to clear up the lungs and open the airways.

I would also advise against running 2 'make up' runs the week prior to the half. What you do not want to do is create an injury in that first long run that jeopardizes the race. I would wait until you feel like you could run then follow your tapering plan. At this point cramming for the race is ill advised.

Hope this helps. You are 100% correct in the fact that you will complete this race with no real issue on race day. The most that will happen is a loss of upper end aerobic capacity, but if you take the half just a little easier than planned, all will go well

All depends on your corral and pace. Obviously, the faster, or slower you are, the less you have to wait. A middle corral running 11-13 mi miles will be quite the wait. Corral A, running 8:00 min miles, not so much.

And it depends on your patience. Even when I've been in A, I won't wait more than a minute or so, about 10-15 people. Any more than that, and I'll keep on going.

Really the iPhone or other phone cameras are about as good as most anything.

Photopass is NOT available for the race; however, Brightroom is. Brightroom is the official race photographer and does a decent job of photo taking. Though, if you have a photo you really want, bring your own camera as Brightroom will take thousands of photos per photographer and your bib is the only way they can tie the photo back to you. The best way is to hand your phone to the character handler and the Brightroom photographer will also take a photo at the same time. You then have two to choose from.

The biggest negative for Brightroom is that they are pricey, unless you order the electronic package. Even then it's usually $99 per race.

PLEASE - a little Etiquette!!!

As you run out of the castle, there are 40-50 of your closest and newest friends running with you. Please do not run like a little kid in an zigging and zagging airplane motion trying to get a photo from each photographer. Besides not getting as many of you as you think, you are ruining everyone else's photo.

Brightroom and Disney has a spot just AFTER the ramp on course left where you can pull over and take a great Castle photo and ham it up as well.

I am totally new to doing a Disney 5K. Can anyone give me the rundown? What time should I get on the bus (I'm staying at OKW)? What time do you want to line up at the start? Are there any sort of corrals (I've read that people just go to the area where their pace is)? Is the finish line the same as the bigger races? Do they do post-race pictures with your medal?

Thank you! :)

Thanks for the well wishes and the advice everyone.

I know you are all correct. I know I can cover the distance, and I know I won't lose any significant cardio capacity in 3 weeks.

I guess I just needed confirmation from other voices to say that I should take it easy and rest as much as possible.

Charles, thanks for the advice about following up with the doctor. I may see about getting a temporary inhaler to help with bronchial issues while recovering from this. It will be worth a follow up call with my doc next week at least to discuss.

Thanks again, everyone.

I still can't help thinking I will HAVE to have at least one 3-ish mile run for my self confidence before race day... just to be sure I can run at all. But we'll be walking around the parks the whole week leading up to marathon weekend, so I'll get my legs stretched out that way at least.

I think that the week leading into the race you should be better and have no problems with a 3-miler. In fact, that is how I started the annual Chucksster 5k on Friday mornings. I had a similar issue and completed a z-pack the Wednesday pre-race in 06. I went out and just wanted to see how everything felt. I would have set a PR for the distance if I would not have looked at the watch as I passed the front of the Boardwalk. I realized I needed that run to loosen up and to re0tune the internal pace clock. It is now a tradition.

This year, the Chuckster 5k is being held at the OKW!

I used my iPhone last year and it was a pain. The flash isn't that great in the dark and some of the best character pics were blurry because the helpful CM's didn't take the picture properly. I also use my iPhone while running for music and Nike Plus Running so stopping the apps each time, removing my earphones and handing the phone over, then restarting my apps and music and reinserting my ear buds was a pain. For the marathon, I purchased a tiny Lumix camera. Found it on sale at J&R for $99 so it was worth it. It actually takes some nice pictures so that's a huge plus.

The race starts at 0630. I would be on the 0530 bus so that you get there and can mill around and find your spot. In the past they have not started in waves... in other 5k's this year, they have waved the start But that was also an AK race, I believe.

Because this is a self seeded race, assume a couple minute off your pace. I guarantee you that is not enough, but you will feel guilty driving that much off as you line up. The start is next to the finish line (it is the exact same spot the 1994 marathon started) on the canal and on the drive separating 4 parking areas. The race runs away from Epcot and then runs the perimeter of the parking lot. Finish is the same finish line you will finish your other races on.

There are photographers and I believe there are medal lines set up.

Have fun!

I am seriously thinking of running with my GoPro this year. I am just not sure that I really want to mess with the thing at mile 33 of the weekend and cannot figure out a nice work around. I have run with it on a few 6-10 mile runs so I know it is easily forgotten. Oh decisions!

I didn't think the castle was too dark during the Princess HM this year. The sun wasn't completely risen, but it was definitely on its way up. Granted, start time was 15 minutes later (5:45am) and a month later so that would add a few minutes of light. But here are the shots I got at the castle right before mile 6 (I believe the marathon follows the same course up until this point correct?)

BTW, these were shots taken by Brightroom. Looking back, they had better pictures than my camera, but there were definitely some character stops I got with my camera that I would have missed since they didn't have Brightroom photographers.

Oh that is dark!. Bummer. Here's to wishful thinking ;)

I do have a better photo, of the castle, but the runners look like ants.

It's dark enough that I know what it feels like to have paparazzi shooting photos as you get out of a car at night. Takes a good 2-3 minutes to recover from all the camera flashes.

I do think your off course photos would work if the brighroom tech understands lighting. Too difficult when the subject is on the move

Will you put it on the helmet so we can find you? Or is that only for video taping?

Lots of snow here in upstate NY today-got a snow day from work-yippee:goodvibes. So now I am pretty much doomed to the dreaded tready for all my remaining runs until Goofy. Which is yucky, cause I really hate doing more than an hour on that blasted machine. But I guess I will "suck it up buttercup" as my coach says and just keep plugging along.

I am pretty confident that I can finish, though it will not be speedy by any stretch of the imagination. I may do some photo ops during the half, but for the full its no stopping until we finish cause we have a boat to catch that afternoon.

Can't wait to see the weather forecast, please let it be better than my last WDW experience, which was the Disney on Ice 2010 weekend. :crazy2: Low 50s would be ideal.

Hi all,
I don't post too often but do enjoy following everyone's training. I need suggestions. I came down with the stomach bug on Christmas day and am still not quite feeling myself. I'm pretty exhausted :faint:and everything is not traveling through the digestive system just right yet. I had originally planned to do a 5 miler on Wed, and another 5 miles on Friday with a moderate 10 miles on Sunday as part of my taper plan. Well the 5 on Friday didn't happen and I'm not sure the 5 tomorrow will either. Should I try for a moderately slow 3 or 4 miles tomorrow and then maybe 10 on Sunday if I'm feeling ok? Or should I just bag tomorrow's run and run 6 miles on Sunday. I did my last long run of 20 miles on the 23rd and had planned a moderate three week taper but not quite this quick of a taper. I could use some advice. I'm usually pretty cautious with illness/injury and running, but this close to the marathon and being this sick is new to me. :worried: Help?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Keep up the great training everyone, we're almost there!

Jeanne
