Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

What's everyone's thoughts on the Race Retreat and Pasta in the Parks?

Pasta in the Park sounds tempting but we are only available to attend Friday evening with the half on Saturday--I'm wondering if that's asking for trouble with being on my feet and out and about.

Any other recommendations for dinners Friday evening?

I can say that if the weather turns south (freezing or wet) you could sell a spot in the tent for a nice profit. Otherwise, in my book it's all about pampering. If you have room in your budget and want a carpeted place to stretch out pre-race, have a few beverages or want a character op, then this is you place. It also comes with port potties that have fewer folks per lou and it's own bag claim. Finally, the tent is next to the post race bus stop so it's a shorter walk after picking up your bag. Oh, it is also kind of air conditioned. Though I have a video from a friend in 2010 (year of the tundra) where steam was coming out off of runners pre-race.

If you cannot or fear the walking associated with the Pasta in the park, any dining facility has a pasta option. The economy resorts will have 3-4 selections, the other less economical resorts will offer a pasta special from their fast food window and all resort restaurants (table service) as well as most park table service restaurants will have some form of pasta. We gravitate towards the Grand Floridian Cafe. THis is mainly because the chef was able to prepare a special meal for me 4-5 years ago that was entirely different from the special. Any facility with a chef on staff will be able to offer modifications to the special if asked.

We eat around 3-4 the day prior to the races... I guess I should add that any facility with an Italian name is probably booked by now.

Hope this helps

Did it! Finally conquered the 20 mile monster that's been psyching me out over the last month. Wasn't as bad as I thought. I expected to walk the last 2 or 3 miles but was pretty much able to keep with my intervals. I stopped to stretch a couple of times. Legs were feeling really heavy like the muscles had no more expand-contract capability. But I got through. Went to the grocery store afterwards. DH cooked dinner for us which was wonderful. Now I feel a little tired and stiff, but no pain. Will bake some Christmas cookies tonight and see how I feel tomorrow.

Yes, taper madness here I come! O body please hold it together a little while longer!

You ran out in that weather today?!?! It was FREEZING, and I have to think the Olentangy trail was still pretty icy. Well done!!! If you made it through that, you're good to go!!!

Are you doing pasta in the park on Saturday?

Congrats!!! I am doing my 20 tomorrow morning. It is going to be way cold out there! Brrrrrr!!!! I hope to live to tell the tale. :)

In Oct 2011, I decided I wanted to run a Marathon. I was thrilled that Dis had one just a couple of months away. I picked the Higdon Novice 1 and counted back from the date of the marathon to figure out where to start my training (I was too close to the race to do the full plan). I was in "OK" health, but at 5'10", 225 or so, nobody would confuse me for a runner! I stuck to the training as best I could, but missed some time with the holidays. My longest run leading up to the race was 20 miles, and it about killed me.

I went to Florida alone- no family or friends. This race was to prove to myself that I was tough enough mentally to make it. The night before the race, I ate a couple of pieces of pizza. Race morning I got up at 3 after sleeping maybe 5 hours and got ready. I remember so vividly sitting on that bus at 3:20 thinking "what in the hell am I doing?!?!" When I got to the warm up area I had no idea what to do. I stretched a little, milled around, then after an eternity, we were released to the corrals. Again, I found myself wondering how I got into this mess! I was petrified that I would not finish, that I would have to call my wife and tell her that I couldn't finish.

Then the race started, and the first mile was BRUTAL. Soon enough, I settled in and made it though the first half ahead of pace. I felt great up to mile 16-18 or so. Then the wheels fell off. My horrible dinner the night before wasn't enough to fuel me, and I didn't eat right during the race either. I started really fading around mile 22.

But you know what? I made it. I made practically every mistake a rookie runner could make, and I still got through it! And you know what else?? YOU WILL TOO!!!! In the next couple of weeks, even during the race, you. WILL have doubts. Don't give in. You've worked hard, and you can do it. Draw strength from all the other Disnuts around you and run through that finish line!!!

See y'all real soon!

Hi everyone! Major lurker here, but I have appreciated this thread so much as I've trained for my first half marathon. I started running last spring, had to take two months off for a bad toe break, came back in time to run the ToT 10-miler, and now the Donald is within my sights.

I did the last long Galloway run this morning, and I still can't quite believe I went 14 miles. In a wind advisory, no less! I might have hurled some expletives at Mother Nature when she tossed some major wind gusts my way. I opted to do most of my miles threading a commuter lot so I wouldn't get nailed by flying trash cans and holiday decorations (seriously).

I kept to my usual 7/1 intervals until after I'd hit the 13.1 mark, at which point I really felt the need to walk more getting to 14, but that was gravy anyway. SO exited for the taper now - and the trip! The best part about 14 at the moment is that it's behind me... :)

I'm bib #43473 - DH is 54504, so I'm guessing we're in different corrals. That's okay as we don't run together anyway (he doesn't interval), but it'll be odd to fly more solo in the corral after being together for ToT.

Happy holidays, everyone - wishing you all relaxing tapers! :)

I agree with you Cruz - really well done Buckeye Cinderella! I am hitting the Olentangy Trail tomorrow for my 20 miler. I was worried about ice today, so decided to postpone one day.

I made Christmas cookies and candy today, so plan for tomorrow is the 20 miler, wrap 2 last gifts and do a little last minute cleaning before holiday. I always try to get all my holiday things done by the 23rd because my birthday is Christmas Eve - I love just relaxing and enjoying my day. It will be even more special knowing I am in taper!

Well my tight airways have only improved slightly so I am not running tomorrow unless I wake up to some miraculous recovery. Feeling very nervous about the race.
Congrats to all of you who finished your last long runs today and good luck to those of you heading out tomorrow!

Went out for 20 miler today, twisted my foot off a curb at mile six. I decided at 12.5 that I would call it a day since my foot was really hurting with each step. Now my question- I ran 20 on Dec. 8, 9 on Dec. 15, and today 12.5. Like most everyone else, next week starts my taper. Should I just keep with the schedule and hope that everything is good in three weeks.

Cruz91 and Disney Runner Girl -

Thank you for your kudos but I humbly admit I am not that tough! I did my 20 miler at an indoor track!! Honestly I felt much better staying a little warmer, especially since weather is trending in that direction for the race. I know tomorrow looks better for an outdoor run but frankly I just wanted to get it over with. I did my cold rainy 17 miler either 2 or 4 weeks ago. Cannot remember now. I guess that was my run to build grit!

Cruz91- nice story about your first marathon! Very inspirational. Oh and also, we are not doing the pasta party. It will be a quick trip for us. Hopefully you'll find some folks to meet up with before then.

Yes,stick to your plan and don't try to make things up. You already have 1 20, you will be fine with the distance you have.

Well fart!! I'm awake this morning after the 20 miles yesterday and my knee hurts. I've never had knee pain but from everywhere I've been reading for the last hour it's IT band. :( grrr. Glad it's taper time.

Right now it hurts to bend when I walk. Or just plain bend it & is on the outside if the knee. I'm really hoping it'll be healed by the time Goofy rolls around or I'm gonna be ticked!

For those that have suffered with this, any suggestions are especially appreciated!!

Congrats to everyone on their last long run! I'm supposed to do 23 today. I've done the 20 but mentally feel like I need to go a little farther just so I know I can do it.

I had plans to run it before DH started his shift at 4 PM today. I woke up to his phone ringing this morning and he's off to work because some idiot set a fire in a church in Brooklyn. I'm so pissed because I don't know if I'm going to see him before Christmas or if he'll be home for Christmas, nonetheless now I'm scrambling because I don't want to leave the kids alone for 5 hours while I go running. Happy friggin Holidays. Ugh.

congrats to everyone on their 20 milers! i am very jealous! what a great accomplishment!

also thank you to cruz for the great words of encouragement.

after a really annoying knee thing, not running for almost 5 weeks, and a cortisone injection, i'm kinda sorta back in the game. it's not the training i had imagined but it's something. i had an 18 miler at the beginning of november. i was finally able to 10 on thursday. an interval of run 15 sec/walk 45 sec. it was slow for me but well within the pace requirements. i'm going to go for 16 next week, then 10, then race. i won't be able to do the big taper since i won't have gone up to 20 but i'm hoping that my 18 in november and the 16 next week and sheer determination will get me through.

good luck to those still about to get their long runs in this weekend. and to those hurting post-run? ice, rest, and eat christmas cookies :)

Do you use a foam roller? It has worked great (and quickly) for me in loosening tight leg muscles after a long run. I got mine for like $10-15. Just a thought!

Hard to say IT band or other issue.... either would be chronic over use injury. Adding to pp, make sure you stretch after each and every run. Twice a day roll the calf, ham, quads and IT areas.

Today and for the next day or two, RICE, Rest, Ice, Compression and elevation

Try to take it easy on the knee. Ice the knee 2-4 times a day for 30 minutes. If you have an Ace bandage, wrap the knee and kick back and enjoy some tv this afternoon. Consider taking an into-inflammatory for a day or two to help with the inflammation.

It's hard to say, but this has probably been a long season coming. If you did not notice anything happen on the run, it is more than likely an over use injury. Taper will help heal up the knee and by race day this may be a distant memory.

Good Luck

:thumbsup2 -- The only exception to sticking with the plan would be not running this week if your foot/ankle is stiff. Give it a few days to heal up. Otherwise, you have the distance - Enjoy the taper.

Excitement for my first 1/2 marathon took a hit yesterday. I set out for my final long run, but had to stop after 5 miles due to tightness on the outside of my knee and discomfort on the backside. This is the first time all year I've had any discomfort while running. Took the foam roller to the IT band and iced both areas of the knee last night and this morning. Now my excitement has turned to concern that it'll go away and I'll be able to run the entire distance in just 3 weeks. I plan to stretch and foam roll all week and then try a short run next weekend. Wish me luck.

PR'd my last long run yesterday; which was a shock...lots of hills, 38 degrees and 25 mile wind gusts!!!:cool1: I'm sure our next long run will be much better and will include characters!!!Can't wait...good luck to everyone!
