Official Top Chef Las Vegas thread *Premieres 8/19*

Did anyone watch last night? I thought Eli's comment about Robin winning the quick fire was bad.

I agree.

My 8 yr old DS and I are rooting for Kevin. My 2nd choice would be Brian. I like him better than his brother. Do you ever see his face when he loses its like he is pissed and the other person didn't deserve it. I also thought it was a little crappy that they all wore red scarves. A slap in the face to Robin. Anyone can go at anytime so to get after another contestant I think is silly. Also as a competitor wouldn't you rather a tougher opponent go??

Kevin is my pick as well. I've liked him since the beginning. Exactly my thinking about wanting the tougher opponent to go. You want them out of you way so you have an easier win.

As far as the V brothers I can't remember which is which. I just can't stand watching the one talk because he barely moves his mouth. But I agree that the one does look pissed when he doesn't win.

Does anyone know it TOP CHEF was on last night?? My dvr did not record it if indeed it was on?? :headache:

When I saw my dvr didn't start recording, I switched over to Bravo to check it out...it was a re-run of last week's episode.

PS - I just saw on Yahoo that Padma's pregnant! No word on who the father is. Wowsers!

:thumbsup2 Ok, thanks. So I did not miss anything. So weird how every now and then so many of these reality shows will all of a sudden not broadcast the NEXT episode....:confused3

Ya, wowsers with Padma...hmmm...!!! :)

I thought I was going nuts last night. Glad it wasn't me! :rotfl:

And Padma Pregnant? I wonder if that is why her dress that she wore for the award show had that hideous red flower thingie on it....to detract from a little bump maybe?

They need more drama from the brothers in the competition, I didn't think they'd let Michael go. I thought it would be Eli or Ashley. The shrimp did her in. If she'd cooked those well, Eli would have gone home due to over-salting the gnocchi water.

Ash isn't long for this competition. Admitting he took second place to Michael and that all of Michael's ideas were better than his will come back to haunt him, just like Miguel whom Tom deemed Top Sous Chef.

Evidently the way to win the competition is to be sick (or have your tooth removed). I knew as soon as Jennifer started complaining about being sick, she would win. She'd be the phoenix rising from the ashes. (Notice my play on words... ashes... Ashley and Ash.) :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Yeah, I know... it's too early for such bad jokes.

First off I have to say.......I SAW HUBERT KELLER IN PERSON last weekend. He was in St. Louis, promoting his restaurants here at our "Taste of St. Louis" thing.
He looked absolutely the same as on TV. Pretty good looking guy and was very charming.

Now as far as this episode....Winners are the usual suspects. (yawn)

Surprised that the twin brother blew it and the adoring chef at his side was pretty embarrassing. He thanked him for throwing himself under the bus but the judges knew better. That was my highlight for the show.:lmao:

The food they are making does not seem so awesome. Maybe I am watching too many cooking shows.;)

I can't believe Robin skated yet again. When is she going to get the boot already??? I really wanted Robin and Michael to go to the Judge's Table I think it would have been very entertaining.

I'm not liking Eli too much. I think he is a bit of a weasel. Yes Ashley undercooked the shrimp but he didn't take responsibility for over salting the gnocchi. I really liked Ashley. Did you see Jenn cry when Ashley left??

I thought Brian was a little nasty to Kevin. I don't think Kevin was gloating. I think it was genuine confusion where he was like - I know Michael is talented what could have gone wrong. And he was re creating the dish in his head. I understand he was worried for his brother but there was a better way to express it. I mean Kevin was genuinely happy for Jen when she won. I think Kevin is very secure in his abilities and can be happy for others triumphs.

Ash~ I am in the minority here. I thought what he did showed a lot of character. He was honest. Yes its a competition but he never hid who he is. He told you earlier I have no formal training but he works hard. He suggested some things but Michael had better ideas. So Ash went with them. He was honest. He didn't try to puff himself up like so many try to do. He also admired Michael's talent . Also the producers know the level of chefs in the competition they pick them. I thought Michael was nice when he said with a few more years of experience Ash would be awesome that he had a lot of potential.

Still on Team Kevin.

I was surprised that Jen was in the bottom of the Quick Fire BUT she did state she just was not feeling well.......then she turns it all around and wins it!!!!!! :thumbsup2 $10,000 MACY's gift card...so cool. And that was nice of her to say Kevin will get a new suit!! :goodvibes

ITA w/Bryan being nasty to Kevin. Grow Up, Bryan. Those two brothers need to CHILL LAX...they are so darn serious ALL THE TIME. They always look so sad.

Robin needs to go...she is too chatty!!! :hyper:

The Las Vegas house is just so beautiful and as they ate dinner at night, you could see the Vegas skyline in the background...very nice! :goodvibes

I thought is was so cool seeing Nancy Silverton, the owner/founder of La Brea Bakery. Living in Southern California they are all over here and one in Downtown DisneyLAND....FABULOUS BAKERY!!! :goodvibes

I've liked Kevin from the beginning. He's humble and doesn't strut around like he's God's gift to the cooking-world (unlike some of the others, like say...oh I don't know... like Mike Isabella?!?) Kevin doesn't feel it's necessary to put the other contestants down to make himself look good. Sometimes I'll look at the contestants and think "Now, I would eat *their* food", even the ones that don't win. Like I'm not so sure I would want to eat Hosea's food, but I definitely would eat Carla's or Fabio's or Art smith's or Rick Bayless'...sometimes the people themselves are just so nice or so goofy or care so much about their craft that I think their personality comes out in their food...for instance, like Hubert Keller. He was SO kind with his remarks at that big Chef's dinner, he got his point across without feeling like he had to be a jerk (Hey GAIL, take a page from HUBERT KELLER and JOEL ROBUCHON, wouldja ?!?)

Speaking of which, I am getting REALLY sick and tired of Gail this season - Toby doesn't bother me, but Gail?...yecch. During that big dinner, it looked like she *really* wanted to be her usual catty self, but after Keller or Robuchon spoke she'd kind of smirk and say something like "Well, there's nothing more to say". Gack, does the woman even know how to cook?!? It's odd, last season she didn't really bother me that much, but this year?...gack gack and *double* gack.

agnes!

I don't think Bryan was that nasty to Kevin. After all, they showed what - 15 seconds of the conversation? This could have been going on for an hour before Bryan said anything.

I may not like Robin a whole lot, but I despise Mike. He is obnoxious and sexist, without the chops to back it up. His whole thing was, "Well, I know everything and she knows nothing." Even his presentation was primarily "I, I, I." Suck it up and learn to work as a team!

Did anyone else have problems with Jenn working while sick, taking no food precautions? No mask, no gloves, no nothing? I'm not sure I'd want the eat food prepared by an ill chef.

Ohhh....I said that last night to DH....I was so glad GAIL was NOT there. I am getting so tired of her!!! :headache: Toby, I can take or leave.... he has his good moments....like last night, I cannot remember whose dish he was talking about and it may have been Jen/Kevin's dish....he stated at the Judges Table that he all but licked the plate clean he loved it so much!

That's great! I really enjoyed him on Top Chef Masters.

Do we know what kind of 'sick' she was? She could've had cramps, or something else non-contagious.

According to Tom's blog, Jennifer had a high fever and was quite sick. I hope she's better next week!

Do you think that you've never had anything prepared by a sick chef/sous chef in your life?

Just like office workers, chefs go to work sick, too. Plus, would you want to wear a mask in a hot, commercial kitchen?

Have you never eaten anything that was prepared by your mother or father when they were ill? My family has to eat what I prepare whether I'm sick or not. So far, I've gotten no complaints, but lots of 'yums' when I've made chicken soup because I have a cold.

I'm sure I have eaten something made by an ill chef or sous-chef, but certainly not knowingly! Yes, they come to work sick. And they can be (and often are) responsible for large outbreaks of things like salmonella, flu, etc. Remember Typhoid Mary? She (asymptomatically) spread typhoid around because she worked in a kitchen!

And it's different in my own house with my own family, too - my kitchen (or my mother's) is not subject to health codes. I don't clean/sterilize as much as a commercial kitchen is required to, nor do I have to wear a hair net, etc.

Maybe you cook for your family when you have a fever, but I don't. I don't handle dishes that others will handle, I don't empty the dishwasher, I keep my germs to myself as much as possible. I don't share utensils, I don't share leftovers, etc. (Luckily, my husband can cook!).

I do expect a higher standard of cleanliness and sanitation in high end kitchens than was shown last night.
