Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

Running some preliminary numbers....even on the cheapskate side....it would be a $900-1100 weekend, without factoring in food. Going to have to strongly thing about it.

Come on Todd :) Join us won't you ;)

I have 2 half marathons scheduled before Tink. I'm doing the RnR Vegas and RnR Arizona. In total, I will do 3 1/2 marathons within an 8 week time frame.

After the DL half, I told my DH I did not want to do anymore not counting the Tink and the Princess, which I had signed up for. But now I find myself considering the RnR Vegas. Have you done it before?

Everyone picked out their training plans and started or starting soon? :goodvibes

I'm just going to do Galloway's plan for time goals. It starts Monday. For the Princess this year I started out doing Marathoning for Mortals and then switched over to Galloway a couple months out. I was just training to finish (and secretly for under 3:00). This time I am going for sub-2:30 which is a pretty big leap from my Princess time (2:57) but I am sure I can do it as long as I stick to the speed work, which I didn't do any of for the Princess.

But now I find myself considering the RnR Vegas. Have you done it before?

I have been considering it too. I don't think I could handle 3 halves that close together so I am trying to get DH to do it with me next year. We got married in Vegas in Dec so I am trying to sale him on an anniversary trip. ;)

This may be a silly question, but does anyone know if the shirts for the Neverland 5K and the shirts for the Tinker 1/2 marathon are the same or different?

Wow! That is a lot of races! Are you are Half Fanatic? :goodvibes If not sounds like you will be when you are done with the Tink! :yay:

I'm sure that it has been hard to train in Phoenix with the heat this summer -- my Mom lives in Mesa so I hear all about it. :sunny:

I have a half tomorrow and a 10K on 10/9. Tomorrow is all about finishing in under 4 hours. I'm hoping the 10K time will be good enough to move me up a corral or two for Tink. I know I can do the distance, it's the time that is my big concern now. I survived being swept at the Princess and have gone on to do things that I never thought I could do. I have confidence I will do just fine at the Tink. :tink:

:rotfl: Am I Half Fanatic? :rotfl: You could probably say I am. I started running in August 2010 and ran my first half marathon January 2011. Since then, if I hear about a race that sounds super exciting (Disneyland, Tinker Bell, Vegas) I sign up. It's a bit overboard, I agree. Definitely will taper back in 2012....I hope! ;) (At least my pocketbook hopes. But honestly, I'm not sure I will taper back. I love races!!)

Training in Phoenix late September - May is great! It's a dream come true. From May - late September, it's brutal. But I had to stick to stick to training since I had signed up for the Disneyland half. I'm so glad I did because the race was fun and I'm in far better running shape than all my runner friends that took the summer off! Winning!!!

Good luck on your half tomorrow. Let us know how it went!!!

I have not done the Vegas. My friend accompanied her running friend to the RnR Vegas in 2010 and was posting on FB during the day. It really appealed to me. When friends of mine began signing up for Vegas 2011, I jumped on board, as well. Especially since I can earn the RnR Desert Doubledown for racing Vegas and then Phoenix!

This may be a silly question, but does anyone know if the shirts for the Neverland 5K and the shirts for the Tinker 1/2 marathon are the same or different?

I am sure the shirts will be different since the Neverland is the "family" race . That shirt will probably be a tee shirt. The 1/2 is supposed to be a "race" shirt from Champion. For the DL 1/2 the marathon shirts are different than the "family fun race" and of course the kid's race.

Hope this helps :)

this might be in the wrong place so sorry about that. Does anyone know how i can sign up with a charity team? I'd really like to run this race but it's all sold out.

Can anyone tell me how the kid's races work? My daughter wants to run the 1 mile race (she's 12), but not sure if a parent is supposed to run with them, or do we just meet the kids at the finish or...? :confused3

First, check with Get Travel, the travel partner - they may have some bib spots still available for this race. If you decide you want to go the charity route, they have a list of available charities linked directly on the race website. The link to get travel is also there. They are both "linked" right where it shows the race is sold out. Check them all out as the charities have very different fund raising requirements. For example, TNT requires that you raise $3300 while Lazarex only requires a $750.00 raise.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Vicki - I am planning on doing both races so if the shirts were the same, I was going to order a different size for one of them :) Glad to hear they are different.

With your daughter being 12, I would think she could run alone and you could meet her at the finish line. I don't remember seeing any parents running with kids (and some of them were pretty young) at the Expedition Everest event. The Cast Members do a great job of encouraging them along and keeping them on the course :)

Same here! Is yours also a girls weekend?

No, not really. My mom will be coming with me but she's not running.

Has anyone stayed at the Red Lion before in Anaheim? We wanted to book the Hilton again...have booked it for the last 2 years at $89/night for the DL half weekend but they are now showing well over $200/night for Tinkerbell weekend...no thanks!!! We passed by the Red Lion several times while we were there during race weekend this year and put it on the list of possibilities to check into for January.

I stayed at the Red lion for last year's Half. I got it through Priceline. The rooms are nice and the have Bath & Body Works products for the toiletries. The ART runs early on race morning, we took it.

Have been cross training since the Disneyland half marathon. I follow the rule/suggestion/tip of taking 13 days off from running after a half marathon. I've enjoyed the strength and flexibility training I've been doing.

But I haven't exactly taken a break from running. I signed myself and my kids up to run a 5k October 8th. So this week I purchased running shoes for my daughter (my son already has them) and we started the Couch to 5k program. I don't consider the first week of C25K "running" since it's more "walking"! But the weather has cooled off in Phoenix and these late afternoon walk/runs with my daughter have me super excited to return to my own training.

I'm so totally excited for Tink now that my flight and hotel are booked!!!

I've been trying to find a costume. I found this one at Walmart for $35:

But I'm not sure about the sleeves. I don't know if I'll get too hot. The red "velvet" is really stretchy so that part would be ok. I want to be Tink but I'm sure there's going to be SO many Tinks. :rotfl:

This one is cute too and looks like it would be easier to run in.

I'm also running the LV 1/2. It will be my first time but I'm really excited to run a night time race. Plus I will get my Encore medal for doing my 2nd R&R Half.

Those are really cute. I also have decided that I will NOT be going as Tink. I am leaning towards a pirate costume as well, but nothing this fancy!

Yes, the humidity is a thing :) Especially coming from training in N. Cali during the fall. Just take note of it - you will probably feel it a bit more. I would say not to go for any time records with that one, just take it easy. Also - although the race course is fairly crowded throughout, there is the one section that runs through what I'd call "suburban Honolulu" and it can be boring for some, bring an ipod if you think that will get you (the lack of gorgeous scenery) :) . Also, I did some minor hill training in the bay area and I thought Diamond Head (the only really hilly part) wasn't bad at all. Good luck and aloha! :wizard:

Thanks!!

Sarah~ I love the Captain Hook costume, it's so cute!!

I want to run as Tink because Tink is my favorite Disney character but I also want to stand out if I'm going to dress up.

Thanks!!

I like it too plus I may be able to wear it on the Halloween cruise I'm taking. My boyfriend and I have pirate costumes but for the same reason I won't be dressing as Tink we don't want to be pirates on the ship. :rotfl:

Sarah those are cute. I have had the same train of thoughts. I love Tink, but there are going to be so many Tinks so I started to think about being a pirate, but I have decided to go another direction. My sister and I are going to where mini petti skirts in zebra print, black tanks with rhinestone Minnie heads with zebra print bows, zebra arm warmers, I'm going to bring some blue leg warmers, and either a hat or visor that is going to have a rhinestone zebra print bow on it and either wear my black running capris or bermudas under the skirt. I just have to make sure the skirt is short enough to not get tangled between our legs. :thumbsup2

There is also Tiger Lily and Wendy.

I was thinking maybe a dust keeper (boy faerie) or a lost boy. Not sure that I dare be Peter...as I am not quite that svelte.

I think you can totally pull that off, Todd :)

Actually, I wasn't referring to your mental state, Jac! ;) :rotfl2: There is a running group called the Half Fanantics http://www.halffanatics.com/ You see their blue shirts at half marathons and some WISHers I know are also members. It sounds like you would definitely qualify!

And speaking of WISH'ers, did you know that there is a Facebook group for our Disboards WISH team? http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/groups/24152623077/ It's not as active as the boards but some of the WISHers who don't post on the boards as much anymore are there.

My half went well on Sunday. I missed my time goal by 10 minutes but I finished and this was the third half I started this year. It is a good reminder about how hard I need to work to keep my pace that last hour to avoid finding myself on the bus again in January. :hippie:

I think that you could definitely meet your daughter at the finish. My friend's kids, who were 9, did the kid's race at the Princess this year and had a blast.

There is also Tiger Lily and Wendy.

I bet you could be Peter, Todd.

Thank you so much for telling me about the Otterbox holder for my iPhone. It was so nice not to have to carry that thing for four hours and not worry about the moisture on Sunday. :thumbsup2

I love seeing all the costumes that you are contemplating. I was amazed at the Princess at how elaborate some were -- amazing people could still run in them!

I myself will be wearing my Tink colored WISH shirt. :tink:
