Official Thread For Upcoming Eastern Canadian Cruises

I am looking at the web cam pick, and I think she is at the usual dock. I believe long wharf is over to the left just off the screen

Thank you:flower3:! Just looked at her! Do you know if she is docked at Long Wharf as we will be next week this time? I think they only use that if there are 2 cruise ships in port on the same day.

Where she was docked is the main cruise dock for Saint John. They may be able to put two over, depending on the size of the ships. If she wasn't able to dock there, they do use Long Wharf. That is the parking lot you see in the foreground but I don't believe you can see the ship on the camera if she docks there.

I was wondering if it's tomorrow that the Cruise ship will be in Halifax? We are driving down for the night (nothing related to DIS) and thought how cool it would be to see it there!

I don't suppose we could get on to see what it's like?? We teeter on the idea of a cruise, but think it's not for us. But we've never been on one!

Are there still some folks interested in Fundy? We were camping there last weekend and even though it was raining half the time, was just absolutely gorgeous! I have some great tips from being there if anyone is interested.

Sorry, spamming the thread!

Here is a link to my FaceBook album. Fundy pictures start at pic 33 until the end. I do have some beachy pics to post as well.

Tips for Fundy National Park-
Once off the highway it is a short drive to the park. The roads are most definitely back roads, but not horrid. Just wanted to say, they do not represent most of New Brunswick roads...it is our winters, they are brutal to the pave. ;)

It cost us around $20 for the family pass (Good for 24 hour) to get into the park. You just stick it to the windshield.

Two trails that do not take a long time, but are definitely worth while and are completely different. THe first is called Dickson falls. It is very pretty, almost fairy like in the mossy greens. Lots of stairs, but pace yourself, it's a short hike and is worth bringing the camera! (Pics in my link above)
Next trail is called Point Wolfe Beach (i think) You will get a map when you enter the National Park. It's the last point on this road. To get there you will go in a single lane covered bridge too! This hike brings you down the coast wall and onto a rocky inlet. The kids had a blast and it was nice and refreshing. Windy! It's very close to the open shore.

There is a little house that is the interpretive center. They have neat little books for kids that are a treasure hunt, they fill out their books throughout the day, bring it back and get a prize. We didn't end up getting ours all filled out...again...the rain... but we did raid the giftshop. (there is a bigger giftshop in Alma btw full of local things and then some.)

Alma, you can get a whicked lobster meal here (we didn't, we don't like lobster). There are a few restaurants, fine dining to picnic table local fish and chips grub. Both are great! There is a cute little bakery very well known for it's sticky buns right in the midst. Beware, they are addictive, and suck you in! My husband decided to buy a dozen. Why?? I don't know!! I WAS trying to lose weight. BOO! Yes, they were great the day after as well. (Their squares are equally delish!)

Also in Alma, fishing boats! I was able to get low tide shots of them tied up, and high tide. Again, FB pictures. :)

Something that apparently is locale to Atlantic Canada (My friend in Vancouver begs me regularly to send her some) are humpty dumpty cheesies. Now, there MUST be a company out there somewhere that makes these besides humpty dumpty! But you can get yourself a bag at the little gas stop (An Irving I believe) and tell me if you've ever seen them before! :)

Picnic spots, Alma is great, if you are outside though it is windy. There are picnic tables EVERYWHERE. Ocean view, lake view, in the woods.

Lastly, there is a lake where you can rent row boats and kayaks. We didn't get to do this since it was raining.

Oh I guess one more thing. Fundy area runs cooler by a few degrees. I definitely would bring a hoodie or cardigan and wear capris and comfortable walking shoes.

My husband has difficulty walking long distances- how far of a walk is it from the ship to where you get on the tour buses?

I would think it is no farther than walking into Nassau for either Saint John or Halifax.

Does anyone know how far the Market is from Long Wharf? I would love to explore this area.[/QUOTE]

The market is straight up the hill, about a kilometer. take the Pedway starting at the museum and you will go through the mall, you can "shop untill you drop"

I get to make our activities reservations on Thursday, so I'm trying to plan out what we should see and do in each port. This is the first chance I've had to sit and look at the options, as we've had several other vacations we were planning first!

So, what does everyone recommend doing in each port? In Halifax I'm looking at the beer tasting tour as DH loves a good beer, but before that, is it worth getting the hop on/hop off pass? Or can we walk to things like the Gardens/Citadel on our own? We don't mind a good hike, but wouldn't want to walk for miles, either, when we could just grab the bus. What do you consider to be the must do's here?

Saint John is a whole other thing. I'm really not sure what we should see/do here, so any recommendations are appreciated. I'm assuming the Bay of Fundy is great to see here? We like to see and explore cultures, so something along those lines.

Thanks!

Before I reccommend anything, I would like to see what the first cruise people have to say. I would suggest Fundy, or St. Martins if you are nature lovers.

Doubt they would let you on, but we went on our first cruise in 2010 on the Wonder. I loved it my wife loved it and our son who was 6 at the time LOVED IT!!!!!. We swore we would only put him in the children's clubs on our anniversary day so we could have a spa/Palo's afternoon, and we could not get him out after that!!!! All I can say is go on one. If you can handle the rocking of your car/truck with a trailer on it, a cruise ship is a piece of cake.

Thanks for the wonderful tips. They will also be handy if we take a trip down there to camp this summer:thumbsup2

..and if you're really bored, stop into a McDonalds for a McLobster sandwich. Very Atlantic Canadian. :)

Completely random question, but is Poutine available in either Halifax and/or Saint John. My husband when to college in Montreal and is a Poutine lover. Alas you can't get any in MA.

Yes you can find poutine anywhere in Atlantic Canada. Actually it is one of the reason's I need to lose 50 lbs!!!!! You might not find it in a more upscale restaurant though. Speaking of the Lobster Roll at McDonald's, which is nice, its lobster salad on a roll kind of like a finger roll, they also sell poutine. Dixie Lee Fried Chicken has an awesome poutine with chicken, Pizza Delight used to, may still. Both restaurants are found throughout the Atlantic provinces.
