Disney's Princess Half Marathon Speaker Series
Disney's Fit for a Princess Expo Speaker Series will feature a variety of speakers and topics designed to inform, inspire and entertain you. Redbook is pleased to announce two featured speakers for the weekend that you won't want to miss.
Stacy Morrison, editor-in-chief, REDBOOK magazine, and author of the forthcoming memoir, Falling Apart in One Piece: One Optimist’s Journey Through the Hell of Divorce, will talk about resilience, the trait she believes that women need most to create lives they truly love, no matter what comes their way. Focusing on the two most challenging years of her life—when she took over Redbook magazine as a brand-new mother and homeowner, followed shortly by her husband’s declaration that their marriage was over—she’ll share easy lessons of coping with disappointments, both great and small, and show how those challenges and changes can be the catalyst to come to know ourselves even better. An avowed optimist, Morrison has a unique outlook on life’s struggles and joys—and how they are connected—that will make a lasting impression you will carry with you for months afterward.
Alice Domar, Ph.D., is the executive director of the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health, a contributor to REDBOOK, an expert for BeWell.com, and the author of six books, including her newest, coauthored with Susan Love, M.D., Live a Little. A complete schedule of presenters and topics will be posted on disneyprincesshalfmarathon.com in the coming weeks. Please check the schedule so you can plan enough time at the Expo to listen to some of these great speakers!

Katye McNulty, 21, of Timonium, Maryland, was never much of a runner but this summer a purple brochure turned up in her mail that caught her eye. I am having a nice time just sitting here reading all this info, only on pg 52, but digging through trying to find info. My mother and I are doing the half.
Our goal is just to finish before the 16 minute cut off and maybe play around a bit on the way.

My sister is going too, but she is more focused on her time and my mom and I are just commited to running together and just knowing it will be something fun we did together.

It will be my first half...a bit nervous. I don't get much time to train, I have 2 yr old twins. At naptime I do my Wii Fit...that is the extent of my training during the week...pathetic.

It's freezing here so I am training indoors at the university on the track....last week 72 laps (9 miles) = BORING!!! Hoping to get at least a 12 mile in before the half.

A few questions here

What is the highest you do before the race and how close to the race would you do it.

We are only going to do one day at a park, we did the Give a Day Get a Day Promo and we are planning on going to Epcot. The other day we plan on spending at the Expo and Downtown Disney.

My question is would you do Epcot on Friday and Expo on Sat or the opposite.
Trying to figure out what would be best.

I really don't see getting tired or sore from Epcot, just a matter of maybe we should do it on Friday and get to bed early on Sat after a more relaxing day. (not getting back from the parks until 10ish. My mom is thinking we should do the Expo on Friday when its not as crowded.

Anyone go to the Expo Fri and Sat last year....was there a big enough difference in crowds that would make you avoid it on Sat?

Okay....that is all I can think of now, if anyone can help me out.

Brookie - may of us train with MArathoning for Mortals (MfM). You peak at 10 miles 3 weeks before the race (Sat runs are 10-6-5-race the next Sun). I would recommend Epcot Friday. however, many thigns art the expo sell out if you're not there day 1. On the flip side, Day 1 crowds are awful IMO. Take your pic. :confused3 Love your race goal. perfect!

I have another question relating to the Expo for those who did the race last year. How long did you generally stay at the Expo? I kind of want to be there on Friday morning to see everything before they sell out but I only have theme park tickets for two days (Friday/Sunday so I could rest on Saturday). I was thinking of possibly just splurging and getting another ticket but if the Expo only takes and hour or so, I don't mind taking a break from Epcot on Friday as it is extra magic hours that night.

Also, in terms of transportation - if I go to the Expo do I then have to take a bus back to my resort and then go to Epcot or is there a way to get from the Expo to Epcot via Disney transport or possibly a cab/walk.

Thanks. Leah

do we pay to get into the expo? do children\hubby's that are not racing pay?

Someone might have a better idea for you but if you want to use free Disney transport you can take a bus from the Sports Complex to Hollywood Studios then take a boat (or walk) to Epcot International Gateway. This might be faster depending on what hotel you are staying at.

We went to the Expo last year on Friday afternoon just to get our numbers and bought a few things. We were there for about 90 minutes at the most. We then went back Saturday morning to do a little more shopping. We weren't into hearing the speakers. That would make a difference in how long you stay. If you are just getting your bib and shopping for fun stuff, less than two hours should be fine. Of course last year, there were less than 7500 runners picking up numbers and this year I hear there may be over 13000 which may change the crowd levels at the Expo. We had no wait for bib pick up or at the booth to submit our proof of time. Hope that helps.

By the way, parking is free at the Sports Complex, as is entrance to the Expo. (At least it was last year)

I only wash my hair about 2-3 times a week, max. I am very, very dry (dry skin/hair), my hair is long, and I have to dye it every 5 weeks due to over 60% gray (at age 34).

What I do is wash, blow it out, flat iron, etc. and am able to wear it straight for two days and up the third (either pony or twisted up).

For running/working out, I wear it up in a ponytail and clip the bangs up, then shower just body/face, and blow it back out when done. For ice hockey, I do the same and then wear a bandana under my helmet.

All 7 of us in our group are staying at BWV. Is there a place to park? We will have at least 3 cars...

I do a similar routine with my hair. I have medium length hair. Yes, there is plenty of parking at BWV, both valet and self parking.

I had this problem repeatedly while training for the TOT 13K last October. It almost was the end of my training. I read some threads, got some advice, and tried the following:

1)Pull out the insert that comes in your shoes.
2)Insert "ball of foot" gel pads. You can get these just about anywhere.
3)Then, on TOP of those, put in custom inserts. I used a $29 pair from Dicks that you put in the oven, immediately put in your shoe, then step into them.

This absolutely did the trick. Haven't had a problem since!

Good luck!

This is great--thanks so much! I am going to pick up the gel pads and custom inserts this weekend :)

Morning! With the help of Carrie, i believe the list is complete now on the first post.. please check to see if you are on there, and if not, please post and let me know.. if you want your resort listed, please post also! Thanks!

Saw my name!! Thank you for all your hard work--both you and Carrie!

So back to my question - I know that the final mile or so for me is going to be very emotional. I can pretty much guarantee that I will be bawling like a baby when I finish. So is this normal or are people going to laugh at me? I actually won't care, just wondering if others would be doing the same thing.

I tear up now when Lance Armstrong comes on my iPod and say, "Congratulations, you finished your longest run"

I'll be balling too come race day!

Sorry, I meant at the race itself. Like, if we drive to the race rather than taking a cab.

I beat the winter weather that we are getting tomorrow, and did my distance run/walk on the treadmill tonight. 10 miles, in 2:15:30. Considering I started training on Jan 4th, I am really happy tonight.

We drove last year and parked easily (and free, as we were staying off-site) at Epcot. I don't remember it being a long walk over to the pre-race area...unlike the cattle feeling of the 1/2 mile to the corrals in the pitch black.

You've inspired me this morning. I had every intention of doing my 10 miles outside but the wind chill is -1. So, I'm off to the treadmill...glad to see it is possible. GREAT JOB! :thumbsup2

Sailor's Wife Do you know that some roads close to auto traffic? Just be careful about when you leave or if your DH is trying to get around in a car to see you.

disney_mommy We stayed in Jambo House last week and it was really nice...the pool is almost finished being revamped and should be nice-the pool at Kidani is nice too. The small spa at Jambo is great...you can get a massage ( I had Laurie and she was great-very relaxing), or use the steam room.

on this topic.. from last years race... what's the best route to take for AKL to the Lot at EPCOT.. and what time should we plan on being there... I think I remember reading on the actual marathon page that we should plan on being there at 4am, but that seems a bit early to me:confused3

I did my 5 mile run today... longest run to date and it was great. I'm in awe of you guys running 10 miles at this point :cheer2::cheer2: I'm trying to adjust back to running my long runs in the morning so I was up at 5 this morning to complete my run... going to try to do all my long runs early in the morning since my short runs during the week have to be at night.

Have a great Saturday everyone!!! :hippie:

Hey Caitsmama, are you saving the 2nd post area for a WiSH Meet information. I have read back a bit to see if any talk about a meet has been done.
I am trying to get my plans set for the days I am there.

Any thoughts yet on this subject??

Seems like everyone training is coming along nicely. My plan calls for a 13.1 three weeks before the event and then two 6's. I have now changed that plan to 12 as I have found that has worked for the previous halfs that I have trained for. I have a Half Marathon (ING Miami) tomorrow and then I will take a week off and then back into training for the Princess.

there was talk of a pasta dinner I think it was on the saturday at port orleans at 4:30 at the cs. Someone please confirm though as my memory is BAD!

Thanks Carrie! That is helpful....I will keep that into consideration, I don't think I would be too upset if I don't get anything in particular at the Expo. (Or at least I think that right now). My mom runs much more than me, she might have something she really wants. We would go first thing on Sat if we go.

So would you say the crowds were bigger on Friday or Sat? Yes, the extra runners might make a big difference.

I think it starts at 6? Not sure on the time to be there, either, so waiting for others' advice. :)

I am not running 10 miles... I don't plan on running this thing. Parts of it, yes, but certainly not the whole thing. I have been doing intervals on my short run (~3 miles) days. I started with walk 5, run 1 and am on walk 2, run 1 this week. Long run/walk, I run when it feels okay. I would say probably 1 min out of every 8-10, with a few 2 min intervals thrown in.

Surprisingly, last night my 2nd hour felt better than my first. Warm muscles, maybe?

Today I feel pretty good, sore, but good. Snowing its behind off here, we have 6-8" already and everything is closed (welcome to the South!!). SO I am sooo glad I did the mileage last night.

I am actually moving from being scared out of my mind to looking forward to the princess!! :goodvibes

We have been doing interval training, running 2 minutes and walking one minute seems to be the best mix for us. We should be able to keep it under a 15 minute pace (without stops) I guess that is what scares me. We will have to remember this and limit our stops, it could really mess us up since we aren't fast.

Anyone know what times the corrals are (about?) If say you put 3hrs as finish and registered earlier than someone else with the same time would you possibly get in a faster one?

Somewhere I read someone who put 3.5 hrs last year was in the middle corral. I would think since technically we only have about 3.5 hrs to finish, I would think you would be in the last. I think everyone in the last corral has the same idea...get to the front of the last corral, we all have the same fear. Everyone can't be up front. Can you tell I am worried?
