Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

Shawna, I am going down with my family (me, DH, DS 8 months, DS 3, DS 4) on Friday and coming back on Monday. We have a small camper and we stay at Fort Wilderness. My little boys are running the kids' races on Saturday. My poor husband will be holding down the fort with the little boys and my baby for the race on Sunday. I am more nervous about that than the actual race, if you can believe it.

What run/walk plan are you doing? I have been training using MfM. What is the finish time you are going for? I am hoping to end up between 2:30 and 2:45 using a run 3/walk 1.5 plan but I could also do run 3/walk 1 or run 3/walk 2. I just want to do my best and finish!

I can believe it! I still get the same way and my DS will be 12 on the 24th and my DD is 8 1/2! I have finally learned that DH will never do things "my way" and that I'll have a mess to clean up when I get home, lol. It has gotten easier but I still worry.

I haven't really set a finish time but I would like to be around 3:00 or under. This is my first half so I'm going to be gentle with myself. The last race I did was a 5mile one and I paced myself slower then normal so I wouldn't get tired and by the 3rd mile I was glad I did (there were runners that would run as fast as they could then stop and walk, then run as fast as they could and stop and walk, by mile 3 they were gassed and I just moved ahead with my slower pace). I've been trying to run longer but that seems to actually slow me down so yesterday I did like a 3/2 and was able to keep around 11 min 30 sec to 12 min 5 sec mile pace. If I do that pace according to my little pace race chart I should be able to finish somewhere between 2:45 and 3:00! Like you said I just want to do my best and cross that finish line! That Princess medal has me going ga-ga  The only thing I'm used to getting is a free t-shirt! I would love, love, love to have a real medal!!!!! I'm actually thinking about getting a trainer after this race, one of my goals is to run a 5K under 30min. but for this race.... just finish!!!!

I am doing a walk/run with a walk 2 min / run 1 min. ratio.. i am averaging about a 13:45 min. That should allow me to play with my pace a bit if i need to..

I noticed the last couple days after doing my 10miler on Sunday, that my outer ankle is sort of hurting - when i am walking around with no shoes on - tends to hurt more - the pain seems to travel up my side of my leg (outter left side) -- do you think i was doing something wrong? I don't remember ever having this type of pain before..... Is this what taping would be good for?? (I just read about someone taping their ankles so i was wondering if that would be it..)

Yep! From what I understand it pulls the skin tight to help with swelling and to take any pressure off the sore muscle. You are able to use it during the race and it will stay on up to 3 days. I was looking at using it because I'm noticing shin pain after my long runs, nothing serious but I don't want it turn into something worse! I also read about the recover socks that use a gradual compression that is supposed to stimulate blood flow and help during and after runs. They are not cheap so I was hoping someone had used them and could give a review before I order a pair. They look really comfy though.

It sounds like you might be overpronating or it could just be stress from the longer run.

thanks!! I will look more into that tape -- i am sure they will have that at the Expo as well.. i also thought it may be the way i am turning my foot or something -mabye i am rolling off to the side?? Honestly, IMO i am probably not using the best posture on that foot - b/c i am still healing my toe (which i badly sprained 2 months ago) on my right foot, so i think i am over favoring my left foot -- which i shouldn't do..i guess when i do a short run/walk today, i will have to pay attention to my form more..
I don't want to be limping down the asile at the Grand when my sis gets married later in the week there.. LOL

Shawna, i think your blog is a great idea! It seems we get into these life changing things (doing a 1/2 marathon) and forget to cherish all that comes with it emotionally.... I am a scrapbooker, so i guess i am just into all this *stuff*.. LOL :)

BTW -- who else is staying at POR? We are there from 3/4-3/15 and i would love to hang out with some other dis'ers by the pool or something! I have a 9 year old dd also..

Thanks Caitsmama! I'm a scrapbooker too! Although I don't get to do it much.. note to self: make more time!!!!!

I have a 8 1/2 year old DD and a very soon to be 12 year old DS that would love to have other kids to hang out with by the pool! I wasn't sure if the DH, DS, & DD were going to come down with me but I think the plan has changed to them coming to cheer me on. The friends that had said they would do the race with me when I first signed up changed their minds and never signed up for the race. I was going to drive down Sat morning but maybe I'll change plans and we'll all drive down Friday evening.....have to give this some thought. I agree it would be great to hang with some W.I.S.H.er's!

Shawna, are you staying at POR? I am traveling with "the girls" - (my mom, my dd, and my sis), and will be joined by lots more family later in the week after the race - as my sis is getting married at the Grand on friday 3/12..

I don't know if they will be at the Princess expo, but if they are K T will tape you up for free.
My Dh had them do this for his knee and it really worked.

Thanks Syko! I will go see if they have the list of vendors up yet...

I'm confused. Can't you just copy the list from teh first post? Am I missing something? Forgivve me if my fuzzy morning brain is missing something.

I already have the other thread with everyone listed, so copying and pasting won't help. But like I said, I will see if any Princesses are already listed and if so, I will note that on the other thread.

Good to know, thanks. :thumbsup2

Cracking up....I am so there too! Dh will be at home with our three kids
(ages 7, 2, and 2) for a little over 3 days and I think I might be more nervous about that too.

OMG, I thought you meant the people who are doing princess that post in this thread to add to your list. You meant you are putting the proncess we picked for our bib. OMG, just ignore me. :flower3:

Shawna-- I haven't posted much but had to respond here. My kids are the same age as yours (no, that has nothing to with anything...). Last year was my first half -ok, second RACE ever- and I went into it just like you, hoping to finish under 3 hours. I could have pushed harder and taken a few less pictures but finished at 2:50 and felt great the next two days in the parks! This is so key. I went down with 3 girlfriends who are more athletic than me and they finished between 2 hours even and 2:30 and 2 of them were really hurting, had no character/castle pictures and couldn't thoroughly enjoy the two days we had. So, stick to your plan and enjoy. This year I was planning to go more for time but in the last couple weeks I've reminded myself of how much fun I had and am hoping to just shave 5-7 minutes off last year and still thoroughly enjoy every minute.

Side note---perhaps this is like labor, awful as you're in the middle but then you forget about the pain and do it all over---it wasn't easy last year, I didn't follow my 4:1 plan (too excited, I guess---just running blissfully toward the castle) and had to walk miles 8 & 9 because my back was sore. BUT, knowing to give my body a break and not push at that point, I believe, is what saved me later.

I guess I'm just reminding people to listen to your body AND remember this is Disney  so enjoy and take in every moment.

17 days.... good luck with training :cheer2:

~Jennifer

Jennifer, thanks!!

I am so happy that I am buddying with someone who has done this before. I think she will do a great job keeping the two n00bs in check. :)

17 days. :scared1:
