** OFFICIAL Survivor: Cook Islands Thread ** ‘Survivor’s’ new racial divide

No offense meant... but its an ethnicity... no different than Italian-American.

Italian Americans didn't come up with that name, we GAVE OURSELVES that name because our nationality had been taken away from us so badly that we were ashamed of it ourselves. We reclaimed our culture with the name African American, before that we only had names GIVEN to us, some not very lovely, btw....

No offense taken, I just feel the need to explain WHY it's different and completely understand if it doesn't concern you but it means a LOT to me.

I'm also very anxious to see this Survivor, for the first time since the Rob/Ambuh fiasco!! I think this was a GREAT marketing ploy because it definitely has people talking about a show that has lost a large part of it's fanbase.

I definatly don't understand why people are mad about it. It's just a team separation. Perhaps you could get some culture shining though in their camps or whatever. It's just a division and it avoids the angry people getting voted off early from saying 'oh it's because I'm black' or something similar. I can't describe it, I just don't understand the problem.

I think some people like to own issues they consider "their own" and see this as a situation wherein someone else is using the issue in a manner that may not lead to the conclusion those critics want. In this case, I suspect the loudest critics are most afraid that there will be no substantial distinctions in how different groups play the game, and that afterwards Mark Burnett can stand back and laugh, relating how, within the game, "people are all the same" even if from different (sub-)cultures. It will invariably elevate the show as a locus of pure human interaction, something which works against the idea of uniqueness that many cultural groups like to foster to support their efforts to strengthen their own community.

 I'm ready for this season of Survivor to start :) :)

Giving a bump! Couldn't find it via search engine!

I love the idea of a racial divide for this game. I had heard that it is only for a few episodes though. Is that true? I think the game needs something to spice it up. It has become so predictable the last few games.

After the first couple of runs, they've made it pretty standard practice to switch around the tribes after the first few immunity challenges to keep things interesting. It is basically essential for seasons where they start with more than three tribes, as it is possible that after just a few losses, one tribe could be left with only one or two people.

Jeff was on the View yesterday, and said the seperation is for a very short amount of time. (I already figured that out, based on how long other tribe seperations have lasted).

It was very hard for him to explain the concept. He basically said the original idea was to just mix up everyone, but as they started the interviews, they realized people were proud of who they were, of their race. That gave them the idea of putting them in groups. Jeff said he learned a lot from the experience. He said we should watch it to see how it was done, before we criticize.

I don't know for sure but the age/sex divide was only for one episode (3 days) last season. I'm assumming the same for this season. Not really enough to shake things up if you ask me.

I'm taking a wait and see approach. What suprises me about this thread is that people assume that even dividing the tribes along ethnic/racial lines people are assuming that the members of the tribes are alike thereby promoting sterotyping. Color of the skin does not define a person, but there behavior and actions do. I'm glad to see there are more minoritys this year. I cannot see the divide lasting that long and I see way to much being made of it. I would however like to see a more diverse geographic representation. Yea I most working people cannot just take the time off, but I doesn't mean I want to see so many unemployed actors trying to jump start their careers.

I belong to a race to it's called the human race.

Where did you get that? :confused3

In the weeks after my first post on the subject it has become very obvious this is just a marketing ploy. They got people talking about the show again, so I guess you can say it worked.

Not sure that taking this angle is something I would be proud of if I worked for the producers, or CBS, but it did work.

Yes I think most people are proud of thier heritage. I can't wait to watch. Me and Dh love this show. We always alternate picking our finale 4 and who ever wins gets 4 movie pics that the one of us who loses has to watch with the winner. Woo Hoo I had 4 major chick flicks he had to set through. If I lose I have to get ready for things like James Pond or Austin Powers. :cool1:

I wish they would put me on the show. Course, I'd have to apply first. I can't wait for it to start.
