Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

I still can't convince my DS's girlfriend to join me in the 5k...it's not like we're asking her to do the Challenge with us. o_O

Is she a runner? Does she run on a regular basis? If not, she might view the 5k as a pretty big challenge.

Agreed! I have friends that think 5Ks are huge! For me - they aren't big deals anymore but I remember when I thought a 5K was.

No, do she is a runner and a very good athlete at many other sports as well. As a matter of fact, she was ready, willing, and able to the Challenge with us, but I think she got scared off for multiple reasons. The big one being the cost of the runs like so many others out there mention. That's when we said to then just do one of them with us and join in the fun. That was a go for a while and then I heard she begged out of that because she wouldn't be ready in time, and early morning start times. (Which I explained this is Disney and the parks and roads have to open sometime, but its awesome to see and run before the madness of the public hits them.) After offering up the 5k to do with her as I'm doing it with my significant other (who is just doing the 5k as well), I figured it would be a solution as I can go back and forth to him, while having company when I wanted to run at quicker pace with her, and all of us would go home with some hardware and the memory of running Disney together. Nope. So, I'll just buy her a Chear Squad seat and hope she enjoys it anyway.

Maybe after seeing you guys run it, she will want to do it next year. That is how I got my husband to do Star Wars with me. He saw how much fun I had doing princess this year.

Ummm.... Ok, I appreciate that they put more time and effort into these designs, which I expected with more lead time. The 10k and Challenge medals are terrific... not a fan of the half medal. Again, clearly more effort, and it has good design elements, but it's not really my cup of tea. And Kylo Ren just isn't cool enough for his own medal. :confused3

He might be my favorite...so I am very happy! Sounds like we will see a lot more force awakens star wars this time around. Originally, I hated the new stuff being the focus of the new lands, etc. but now, I have to say I lean towards new much more. It wont stop me from a han solo running costume though.

I cried at my first! Hardest race ever for me. Now challenges are no thing. Crazy to think about!

Ok I have a lot of pages to catch up on! So excited as I am doing SW Celebration the weekend before the races. But guys, if that death star projection isnt up at some point. I am basically going to have a tantrum "reasons why my kid is crying" meme style.

Just thought I would drop in and say hi!
I've run many of the Disney races, including the Dark Side challenge in 2016. I didn't plan to run in 2017, but my 10 year old son decided he wanted to run a Disney 10k, so we just registered a few days ago :)
Then my 16 year old (he will turn 17 before the race) decided he wants to run too. He and I have run several Disney half marathons together, but this time we are all running the 10k.

So awesome! My son and I also run together! Well, we start together but as age is a factor and I don't want to hold him back, he goes and I play catch up. It's all in fun and we love sharing playful taunts, helping each other to keep going when one or the other hits a wall. Sometimes quite literally as we also do mud/obstacle courses together. During SWDS weekend we're scheduled to do the Challenge, while I'm also doing the 5k with significant other. Good luck!

Dark Side - 18 Weeks to Go

Well, it was actually 18 weeks from this past weekend, so if you plan on using one of the various 18-week training programs, this should be your first week of the training cycle.

I saw that, rather brought it to my son's attention so that he can think about what he wants to do. Since we do various distance runs, and the mud/obstacle courses throughout the spring to fall, we can use them as a springboard. I honestly think the boy is a natural runner as he did his first 10k a few years back without any training whatsoever and posted a time of 1:01:18. I remember so well because my jaw was wide open in shock when hearing the news. Instead of picking him up off the course somewhere exhausted, we were going out for dinner and drinks within a few hours of finishing. But I've been out there already hitting the pavement and have already added on uncharted mileage so I'll be ready for sure! It has just gotten so cold so quickly here that it's a challenge (no pun intended) psychologically to get out there and brave the weather.

For anyone who still needs to buy airfare, Frontier Airlines has now opened ticketing for this weekend. I've now booked my flight down Saturday morning!

Don't forget Proof of Time is due January 19th. My BFF asked me about it and I had a panic attack when I looked it up so I just updated mine! Since I'll be at Light Side and visiting family beforehand I figure it's worth checking off the to do list now.

silly Frontier. Used to fly into/out of Fargo, but not for a few years. Airfare has skyrocketed for me, so I'm holding out hope that the "100-60 days out is the best time to buy plane tix" thing is a thing.:sad2:

Saturday Dinner Meet-Up?

So, last year we had a great Saturday dinner before the Dark Side half marathon with a few DIS'ers, plus friends. A friend of mine, plus @Z-Knight, @Fruto76, @Fruto76's sister along with two of their friends were there. @HockeyMomNH and her daughter almost joined us as well.

In any case, I thought I would see if we wanted to get a small DIS group together again for the 2017 Dark Side weekend. I have made reservations at Il Mulino at 5:00pm on Saturday (4/22) for eight people. So far, it's just me and a friend of mine. Anyone want to join us?

I highly recommend you guys go - because @opusone and @Fruto76 and her sister/friends were awesome and it was great to meet with them. It's also nice to put faces to handles from this board....well, some faces are scary, like mine, but others are great. And you get to do some carb-loading, so it's a win-win.

I'm not going to be at Dark Side this year, my daughter's HS band is doing a trip there that week and I'm going as a chaperone. We are flying home the Friday of that weekend. Sorry I'm going to miss you guys again. :-(

I did convince my DH to take me to DL for Tink in May though instead!

Sooo, I still haven't ruled out the possibility of breaking down and signing up for the Dark Side Challenge. I already have flights booked for that week (for spring break) but my return flight is scheduled for Saturday so I'd have to change it. I thought the prices were outrageous, which is why I wasn't really thinking it was possible, but they're actually not as high as I thought. So it's so tempting, especially after seeing the Challenge medal, knowing that I can complete a challenge, and knowing that I can function at work the day after doing 2 races (school starts back on Monday, so just like I had to do with Wine and Dine, I'd have to leave Sunday).

Bummer I'll be leaving Saturday evening! Sounds like fun!
