Mangino's closes at 9 p.m. and the buffet at 9:30, so they aren't options for after park closing meals. The quick service by the bus closes in the afternoon. The only after park meal option has been Evergreen's or room service. I don't know how things will operate after Evergreen's closes. Maybe they'll keep Mangino's open later.

Simply moving Evergreen's food items onto the Mangino's menu seems strange. They are 2 very different dining experiences. It will be interesting to see how they pull it off. Does anyone know what's going to happen to the arcade? My kids loved playing the games while we waited for our food. This closing of Evergreen's makes absolutely no sense. :sad2:

Hi, do you mind if I ask what your location was? I know nothing about SOG - but we are doing a family trip in Jan. 2010 - my oldest DS & DIL will be staying at SOG - I'd love to be able to tell him what to "request" so that they can see Wishes from the room. It will be his first time back to WDW since he was about 8 or so. I'd just like to make it as "special" for them as possible.

Thanks so much!!!

Sure, we were in 304 this trip, in March we were in 306 and 307. Those rooms directly overlook the magnolia pool, so you can watch Wishes from the balcony.

honestly, I found the food situation to be the only drawback of SOG. Late nights you were pretty much out of luck. That's unfortunate because everything else is great, IMO.

Thank You so much!!! I appreciate it. So, then he should request "near the magnolia pool or overlooking the magnolia pool" - also, should he request a certain building or just a "300" number room? LOL

Forgive me - I have NO clue - what specifically should he "request" --- as his Mom needs to be hit over the head with it!!!

I'm sad about Evergreen's but maybe this will turn out to be a good thing. They can consolidate kitchen staff. wait staff, and kitchen equipment. Maybe they will have 2 sides to the restaurant. Evergreen's the bar and bar food side and Mangino's the restaurant side.

I wonder if the intent is to expand Manginos by taking out the fitness center that is on the ground floor now. It doesn't make sense to me to take out the quick service area. Evergreens is a casual place to get a drink and snack or quick meal after a day at the parks or a round of golf. Manginos is a table service restaurant. My one thought though is that maybe they are going to combine because Mangino's was not doing well. My wife and I had dinner one night there, we made reservations the night before with no problem, and when we were there, I think maybe 3/4 of the tables were empty.

Something that I thought of was golf cart parking. Sounds dumb I guess, but Evergreens had a place to park the carts. I guess we have to wait a little to see what the real plan is before we do too much speculation.

No one has responded to my e-mail yet and that is really strange, usually I get a response in just a few hours. If they ever respond, I will let you all know. I asked them if it was permanent or a remodel, relocation or whatever.

Both times we have been to Shades we have requested to be by the Magnolia Pool and both times we were accommodated. We go for the third time in April and have once again requested Magnolia side; primarily because this is where the hot tub is. You can see Wishes from these rooms and also they are much closer to the lobby and entrance than some of the new rooms. A lot of folks don't want these rooms because they are older, and/or they want to be by the Mill Pond pool (primarily for younger families). You may want to check and see if they have reservations for a poolside room which will be ground floor walkout to the pool deck, or just a standard double queen. We have learned to make reservations for the poolside rooms; it makes it easier coming and going from the hot tub, not to have to walk through the inside corridors to our room. They are around $10 more per night, but we prefer them. All you really need to do is request the Magnolia pool if that's what you think they'd want, and I'm sure they will make it happen.

SOG has to get permission from Disney to do any major remodeling. It's hard to imagine Disney would o.k. eliminating a restaurant that serves some of it's golf courses. Hopefully it's just a remodel. Evergreen's is dated looking and could use some sprucing up.

Not only dated, but some of the seats had torn or bad places in them.:sad1: I wondered why they didn't fix up the place when it was closed during the Major Remodel a few years back. It was surprising to see they hadn't do anything when SOG reopened in 2004.

We can only hope that whatever they do improves the SOG experience.:thumbsup2

Not to be a Pollyanna, but I want to believe they will make improvements.

I am so happy that this thread is here. I am getting a lot of good information.
We will be staying at SOG for the first time Dec. 24-27th. I made my reservations this afternoon. :cool1: I ended up booking online because I was on the phone on hold for a good amount of time.

I have a few questions and I know the DIS is the place to get answers! :thumbsup2

Since they don't have a place to make requests while making ressies online, can I do so at a later date? And if so, when?

Do they do anything special for Christmas?

Will it be okay to put a small tabletop tree with lights up?

:thanks:

We did the same thing last Christmas.
You can probably make requests anytime you can get through. That's what I do. Once I have my ressie made I call later on with requests. Never a problem.
We had a small tree on the table but made sure that it was unplugged whenever we were not in the room. Ours had an on/off switch, but we unplugged.
They had Santa in the Lobby on Christmas Eve from 5-8 but we were at the Candlelight processional so we missed it. They had cookies and hot chocolate too I believe. There were carollers on Christmas evening also. Missed them due to resort hopping that night. I had to see the Grand Floridian and some of the others before I left.

I'll check and see if I can find the list of events they gave us.

Sounds great. Thank you! :flower3:

I also sent an email to SOG regarding Evergreen's a couple of days ago. So far, no response. If I get a reply, I'll let you know. We are going in May and this would change our eating plans. We always stop at Evergreen's for a drink and snack before we go to bed. Hope it's just a renovation as this does not make any sense.

How far is walking to the buses and do they run like disney resorts? I like the fact there are buses always coming to the disney resorts. Compared to a preferred room at Carribbean is the walking to things about the same. And exactly where is this hotel located? Can you see it from the monorails?

My own opinion - I found the busing SOOOOOO much better than regular disney busing. The only draw back is that you had to go to the TTC for everything and change buses to get to the parks BUT BUT BUT - the buses ran ON SCHEDULE - if the schedule said the bus would be there every 15 min, it was there every 15 min. So if you were sitting waiting for your bus you knew exactly when it was going to show up. When I was there the buses were a bit old and sometimes they were parked at the farthest bus queue. BUT when I'd look at the long lines to get onto the resort buses and I'd look at the SOG line, I was happy we were at SOG.

The hotel is located right across the street from Poly. If you look at a disney map you can see the mickey head shaped pool on the map even though the resort isn't labeled.

Look at this map - #4 is suppose to indicate poly (poly is right above) and Shades is that complex directly below the #4.

Walking - my room last time was in the old section but near the front of the old section so we found it quick to get to the bus. Some of the rooms in the old section are quite far though. Certainly a lot less walking than at Caribbean though - and the walk is all inside (if you want it to be). You can also walk out of the resort and across the street to poly (about 1/2 mile walk) and pick up a monorail if you choose. Many people suggest that, but we never found it necessary.

Beg to differ: There are buses that go directly to AK and HS. They run every half hour. If you are in a big old hurry, you can go to the TTC and the bus stop directly in front of the SOG stop is for HS.

The walk to the Poly is about 10 minutes. Just cross at the end of the driveway and you are on Poly property and the path is marked pretty good.

I never feel like the walk is that big of a deal in the mornings, come the end of the day and the whole place seems too far!:) Many pages back we had a discussion about which was the closest and how far the walk was. Guess it depends on age and how bad your feet are hurting at the time.:rotfl:

Yeah, thanks for that clarification - I remember that now. :) I also remember some days hitting the AK bus at the right time and sometimes hitting it wrong and taking the TTC bus. I do also remember that the SOG bus at TTC was very convenient with plenty of seating. It was the bus at HS I think that was wayyyy out of the way (or maybe it was AK) one of them it just seemed like we were in the wilds of the parking long LOL.
