Official September 2012 planning thread! List on page 30!

This will be our 3rd trip that we've pulled out daughter out of school for a week. This first time she was in 1st grade and it was in January. It was surprise trip for her so I emailed with the teacher back and forth about it. She was a Disney nut like us, so she was so excited for my DD! She got all of her work together for us and I picked it up in secret.

The second time was 2 years ago when she was in 3rd grade. She was in school for the first 11 days and then we pulled her out for 6 days (we traveled Wed-Wed). We had Open House the night before our trip and her teacher asked me if we were excited for vacation the next day. She was great about everything and gave me some work for her to do on the plane.

We are traveling at the same time this year as we did 2 years ago. I already know her teacher and I know his wife very well (we were in a mom's group together). My DD and his DD were best buddies during our Vacation Bible School this summer too. Again, she'll be missing 6 days of school (Tues-Tues this time around). She'll be in 5th grade and it's her last year of elementary school. It will be a little harder to pull her out as she gets older, but she's a very bright girl. She's in the Gifted & Talented program at her school and has a very advanced reading level. The teachers she's had in the past know that she can make up the work, especially that early in the year.

Family time is SO precious and we take it whenever we can get it. We're always so busy, even in the summer, that it's nice to just have a week together and have fun. School is obviously very important too, but a week away at the beginning of the year isn't going to make or break the whole year, in my opinion anyways.

In other news....only 26 days until I'm in my happy place!

Thank you so much for your input! It really does help to know that I'm not the only one worried about it and that others do it all the time and have no problems! My son starts school Monday and I plann on talking to the teacher next friday. I'll let you all know how it goes!! :bitelip:

In regards to pulling the kids out of school
I have two thoughts on this
1) Family time is very important, I think more so now then ever, because our lives are all so busy with trying to work, school, fitting in activities and just running daily lives, that we forget to actually spend time together. We have gone away in Sept/October for the last 4 years and will continue to do so.
2) Being away 1 week of school a year will not kill them, nor will it put them behind. I am not taking them out during exam weeks or during finals or anything like that. As they get older and into classes that require work, yes I'll ask for stuff, but if I dont get it, I'm not going to get upset and will actually enjoy the time even more so.

They are your kids, you do what you feel is right for them, and for you and for your family... any looks or comments are based soley on them doing their job as teachers, and being jealous they dont get to go with us :P

my DS14 & DS10 are so excited about our upcoming WDW trip. But my DD17 is at that age...she's hard to read at times. I woke up this morning to one of her sketches on my bedside table. I'm guessing my Katie-bug is getting excited to be 1 month out!

that is an awesome sketch

As for the school thing: I've pulled my DD out of school for Disney multiple times. Thus year she's in 7th grade. The school doesn't care as long as we let them know the situation; however, she can only miss six total days this year without having to do detention for the 7th missed day. 1/2 hour after school gud every day missed. She will miss three days this September. Disney/travel is a learning experience and makes kids mire "global."

Please tell me you mean they get detention for missing WITHOUT a Dr's note. Right???

Just checking in leaving in less than 48 hours. Actually we will be just about landing in 48 hours. I can't believe we leave on Friday. Just need to get threw the rest of today and tommorow.

Just a FYI if it hasn't been posted but there is a bounceback for FD. For the dates of 8/17 or 18 threw 9/28 2013. I'm going to book the last 2 weeks in August. Last year the BB nothing was exclueded so hopefully we can get into AOA standard room. Fd is the best deal for us. I also cancled our one adr. It was at H&V so dd could meet Jake. I didn't relize we could meet him near the disney junior show. SO I cancled it. Plus with the weather up in the air but I'm not stressed about it. I know some are but we always seem to go threw this every year. I'm use to it by now. LOL

Doing my SW check in tommorow. Hopefully I remeber to watch the clock and get it done. I want to be in a seating.

Here's hoping for some good weather for your trip. I have been following the storm. :wizard:
